I love rpgs- but I've come to the realization that almost all of that experience is in either Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior/Quest, or Pokemon. That's actually a really narrow focus, lol.
So what non-mainstream rpgs have gotten you excited and you really enjoy?
For almost a year now I've been playing the Shining Force series. They're strategy/tactical rpgs (like Final Fantasy Tactics), but for the Genesis (and Sega CD). I had a friend in college who used to rave about them, then played them all. Then one of the twitch streamers I was watching a few years ago also played through all of them. Finally I got curious enough and now I'm playing through all of them, lol. The games are really good, is what I'm saying. The controls are simple and the game doesn't punish you for being not very good, but remains challenging the entire time even how. It's a good balance and the art style is super cool.
What about you?

Chrono Trigger was a pretty neat experience. So was the Mother series.

I had a list of about 20 RPGs that at one time or another were my GOAT...
But thinking about which ones I took the time to beat the most, narrowed it down to...
Earthbound (MOTHER 2)
Xenogears
& Lunar The Silver Star (Sega CD version)

I'm not big into games where you have to grind, but Earthbound was always a favorite of mine. As a little kid it gave me a sense of freedom to be able to explore a city alone, stay in hotels, and have an ATM card. I remember renting it from blockbuster and having to always bug the teenage employees to go find the beaten up players guide in the back.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses was a newer rpg I loved, but that is more so from the story / character side of things. I'm sure if people looked at my file there are a million stats and items based mistakes I made.

A Squaresoft production that isn't Final Fantasy, a contemporary of VII/VIII, Parasite Eve. I play it every year. I started learning the speedrun this year while I was hurt, and might go back to learning it. It has horror elements, so if you're not a fan of that, watch out.
(I've never finished this one, but another PS1 Square offering is Legend of Dragoon. If you can get past the fact that it's four discs and the graphics are not great, even for PS1, it has a sprawling world and you can turn into a dragon! Kind of. Spoilers. Kind of.)
If you didn't like the horror bits of Parasite Eve you definitely will also not like Shadow Hearts, but for the people with sterner stomachs, it's an RPG set pre-first World War (or, if you play the sequel, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, smack dab in WW1). You also have to do a timing minigame every time you do an attack.
If you like tactics RPGs but wish the numbers would go absurdly high, I propose the Disgaea series. You have to do some real work to get your characters to the point where they can do millions of damage by themselves, but if you're (more patient/more willing to cheese and/or look up guides to quickly max out stats) then you can definitely get some dopamine-rush-inducing numbers going up. I have not played the most recent one (Disgaea 6 has 3D models for the first time!), but almost all entries are 2D sprites. The super attack animations are still sweet, but if you're not into sprites that look like they belong on the PS2, you probably have to skip these.

I've got too many to name, so here's a quick top 10 Fav non-Pokemon/DQ/FF RPG's
10: Secret of Evermore This SNES cult classic takes a similar game play of Secret of Mana, and adds a Sci-fi Time travel gimmick to it. A must play if you haven't tired it, speaking of Secret of Mana
9: Mana Series While not every game is a masterpiece, they series as a whole is worth a look,
8: Breath of Fire See Above
7: Phantasy Star SEGA's answer to Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, is a neat little game, altough the first person dungeon crawling can take some getting use to.
6: Ys Personal opinion this series need more love in the states
5: Thousand Arms RPG X Dating Sim, Do I Need to say more
4: Octopath Traveler Play this now!
3: Brave Fencer Musashi One of two reason I begged my parents for a PS1 for Christmas
2: Shin Megami/Tensei While the Devil Summoner and Persona spin-offs have passed the original series in popularity, this is still not a bad series
1: Live A Live I'm telling you now, if you have a Switch, get this game. This is may favorite RPG of all time, and easily of not top 20 games of all.

There was one rpg where you were raising an army against an evil empire. You did both rpg and military like battles.
Suikoden I think was it's name.
The one snes where you played an Iga Ninja against Oda Nobunaga was good too and featured both party battle and sneaky ninja stuff. Innindo I think it was called

Oh my god I can't believe I had to look at this thread and see someone bring up SMT. Persona 5 is a banger.

persona 5 is goated, nier automata is also a great great great great game if you haven't played it. it's worth checking out. i really enjoy yakuza: like a dragon too. except some later parts get very very grindy, even if you do some sub stories and side shit along the way.
chrono trigger is great too.
really enjoy digimon too. those games are pretty fun!

Suikoden 2 is one of the greatest JRPG´s ever made. Star Ocean series is great, at least the second and the third are very good. Persona has a few great games in its series. I would pay gold to see another Suikoden game.

And here I was gonna drop Shining Force and Mongo literally made this post to talk about it lol.
Probably the first RPG I played, not that I've played many, mind you.
I don't have too many memories of the game but the music is stuck in my mind. Oh and one of the characters is called Gong, which is glorious.
Oh and I think there's a bastard sword, and someone named Vankar, both of which were just too funny to our young teenage minds.

Is Vankar funny because his name is close to wanker, or am I missing another joke?
