Tommy’s Gym, Trenton Ontario - Friday, November 12
Cassie Hunter stands outside the simple building, not far from the river. Through the windows we can see the equipment inside: weights, weights and more weights, as straightforward as a powerlifting gym can get. It’s a cool morning, Cassie in a warm coat, leggings and sneakers, looking down at her phone before glancing up as she hears someone approaching. A young woman, barely an adult by her appearance, much closer to average size than Cassie though still fit, clearly someone who was there to train as well.
Amy: “More Tinder?”
Cassie grins at her young friend.
“Business, actually. I’ve been thinking about doing a calendar maybe, proceeds to charity.”
Cassie eyes her friend, who seems to be excited about something, eyes narrowing a little before going wide.
“Holy shit, is that an engagement ring?!”
Amy beams and nods eagerly, holding her left hand out for Cassie to get a better look. It’s not a massive rock, small but sparkly and beautiful on a gold band. Cassie admires it for a second before pulling Amy in for a hug.
“Congrats. Steve’s a great guy, I’m really happy for you.”
Amy smiles up at her as the two release.
Amy: “I wish my parents were as happy as you. They think I’m too young.”
This time it’s her eyes that narrow as she eyes Cassie.
Amy: “Do you think we’re too young, Steve and me?”
Cassie pauses a second, clearly picking her words carefully.
“I think you’re young, yeah, but that doesn’t necessarily mean too young. I mean, I got married when I was your age.”
Amy blinks in surprise.
Amy: “I didn’t know you’d been married before.”
Cassie shoots a wry little grin.
“It was before your time, yeah. High school sweetheart, got married pretty much as soon as we graduated. We grew apart pretty quickly though; he wanted me at home while he worked, I wanted my own life. I got into lifting ‘cause, y’know, it’s awesome, he hated that, kept telling me I’d get ugly if I got too big, just tried to tear me down so I’d quit and just be home for him.”
Amy: “Jesus… so you think it’s a bad idea, getting married?”
“What? No! No, Steve seems like he’s a way better guy than my ex. And I’ve got friends who were together in high school, stayed together, they’ve totally made it work. Just… can I offer some advice, is that cool?”
Amy nods.
“Alright, keep this in mind. People are constantly growing and evolving and all, but with how young you and Steve are you’re gonna evolve a lot. Just make sure you’re ready to accept and roll with how he’s gonna grow and make sure he’s gonna be able to do the same for you. If you two can make that work, then I think you’ll be fine.”
Amy nods again.
Amy: “How long have you been divorced then, anyway?”
“Almost four years. Left him, we sold the house, he took his share of the money and fucked off to Alberta, I stuck with lifting, got these done-”
She gestures to her breasts, drawing a smirk from Amy.
"And got to live on my own for the first time in my life. Love it. Don't think I'll ever go back."
Amy: “So, I gotta ask, all of that got anything to do with, y’know… how you are with guys now?”
Cassie smiles a little and shrugs.
“I married the first guy I ever had sex with and he was the only guy I was with. I’d been divorced a year before I had sex with anyone but him, I was almost 25. And y’know what I’ve learned?”
Amy shakes her head, eyeing Cassie curiously.
“Literally everyone so far is a better fuck than my ex.”
The two share a laugh.
“But I mean, I’m in no rush for another relationship and sex is awesome so yeah, I like to fuck around. I’m happy and no one gets hurt, right?”
Amy: “So how come I never hear about you and any of the guys here? I know you like meatheads from wrestling.”
Both women smirk a little before Cassie shrugs.
“It’s… okay, so I really kinda like the idea of having one thing in my life that’s wholesome and pure, y’know? And that’ll never be wrestling because… I mean, wrestlers are crazy. You never know if someone’s gonna try and mess with you, stab you in the back, most people are just out for themselves. But here? There’s support and encouragement and everyone wants everyone to thrive and just… I don’t wanna mess that up with sex, I guess.”
Amy nods along contemplatively.
“Anyway, can we be done being all emotional and stuff? Wanna go throw around heavy stuff?”
Amy: “Absolutely. Let’s see if my new ring throws off my grip, eh?”
The women laugh together as they turn to head inside, Cassie’s phone buzzing in her pocket as the scene starts to fade to black.
“That one was Tinder.”
