“It happens”
Scene opens up in a comfortable looking locker room. The man speaking is sitting on a sofa, arms crossed on his chest. Face almost completely covered by a scarf and a headband. Almost, it is. We can still clearly see his eyes. The light they emanate burns the space in front of them. The man we all know as Night stops for an instant, the moments needed to emphasize his words, and then resumes with a calm, tranquil, voice.
“It happens to the best of us. Losing, I mean. It has happened to immortal legends like Mohammad Ali. It will happen to you and me. The point is not whether you and me lose, it is how we do. It is how and if we manage to stand up after a beat down that makes up the sort of fighters we are.
To be honest with you, I didn’t think I would lose in the second round, not to someone like Jay Stevens. Yet here we are, after a fight where I put all bets on me, and lost.
It happens.
I could say I am back after a serious injury and not one hundred percent fit. I could say that the months of rehab put rust on me. Rust I need to shake off before I am what I was before that injury. That rust will be shaken off only through fights, though.
And it is just an excuse, anyway. I don’t want to be like that. I do not want to live on excuses. That rust didn’t hinder me from winning against Tyrone Walker. A champion of this tournament, in the past year. If he is a former champion, he must have skills. Skills he put on in the fight against me, and lost.
No. It’s not that.
I clearly underestimated Jay Stevens, and apparently I was not the only one!
Gebin.
You too entered that ring, in the first round, confident of your own skills. Ready to take on the world. Someone like Stevens would be not a threat to a former XHF Tag champion and current Fireside star, now would he? Well, apparently he was, and he went beyond that. He went beyond being a simple threat and beat you in the middle of the ring. He pinned your ego. One. Two. Three.
You clearly underestimated him.
Just like I did.
And now we find ourselves with a tough loss on our shoulders. A loss that I could’ve avoided. But we move forward. We live and we learn. You take a loss today, yet you still live to fight another day. And that upcoming day should find you ready. A fight older, wiser and more experienced. I have many fights on my shoulders, even if I am nothing more than a youngster with a lot of time in front of me.
I have experience.
As Lynx I conquered insuperable heights.
As Eron Hunter I took on the unseen and came back to tell the tale.
As Night I am clearly in resonance with my heart and my soul.
Lynx. Eron. Night.
They all are a part of me. And I am incomplete if I can’t look back and stare in the face of experience brought to me by each and every single one of these personas. But I can. I can recall my experience in me, and that makes me whole. That makes me a dangerous opponent.
And you, Gebin, know that.
You spoke of fights for the ages. And I agree. I took on Guillotina and won, in a fight to be remembered. He did that time, what I did with Stevens. He underestimated me at first, and that came back to bite him down, in the end. But we did find respect for each other after that fight.
Respect I have yet to find for Stevens.
Respect I can only find if I face him again and, this time, put one hundred percent of dedication in the match. Focused from the beginning. But in order to do that, in order to face Stevens again, I must first face you. And I will. I will face you, Gebin, with respect and dedication. Just so that I do not have regrets again.
I will re-find the inner light, in my soul and my heart. That light will reignite my fighter spirit and I will soar high again. Just like the Albatross that I am. I will fight you, Gebin, and you will again see why you respect me, why you do look up to me. Why you do want to be in the same ring as yours truly and why you are so excited to fight me.
I, too, will find the lost excitement in me. I will find the needed dedication to make this fight one for the moment and, maybe, one for the ages.
Win or Lose.
Man loses.
Man wins.
It’s how the world goes round.
It Happens.”
Night takes a cigarette from the pack of smokes that was laying on the table and lights it. He takes a couple of deep drags and exhales strongly, as the scene fades to black.
