Hearing the two words ‘AND STILL!’ had never been sweeter. MYOJIN had just survived his toughest challenge yet at one of XHF’s major PPVs. He had done exactly what he set out to do; to bring more eyes on himself globally and the title that he carried. Syndicate had attacked him before the match even began, the so-called Wrestling God had done everything within his power to keep the champion down. Yet, at the end of the match, the Shining Star stood tall- and that felt amazing. It felt relieving to prove that he was a worthy fighter against WWX’s best. It felt good to talk shit and be able to stand tall when the dust cleared. He felt like he was on top of the world.
Well, emotionally, at least. His body on the other hand? Was sore as hell from the war he had just gone through. He sat backstage at the Supremacy show while the other matches of the night began, surrounded by a medic that cleaned the blood from the nasty cut he had suffered on his forehead. MYOJIN bit his lip and winced- though he couldn’t help the proud smile that grew on his face as he stared down at his own reflection in the golden main plate of his belt.
Though his confident look faltered. There was a nagging feeling he tried to ignore. Sure, he had passed the test and retained once more-.. But the match had been too close for his liking. Way too close. It put into perspective that not every bout would come as easy, if anything, it seemed like the difficulty amped up with each defense. Soon enough, in February, he’d be facing whoever survives the NPW Cruiserweight Cup. If he thought Syndicate was hard, someone who ran through multiple other people just to earn a title shot at facing him would be even harder…
How long can I keep this up?
Soon enough, the medic finished bandaging his head. The blonde heard footsteps approaching after he was done being tended to and looked up. His eyes widened slightly with surprise at who it was- one-half of the XHF Tag Team Champions and owner of FIRESIDE, Anthony Caffrey- and he looked like he also went through hell to retain earlier in the night.
“Look! The champ is here! Hey man, I just wanted to personally congratulate you tonight. You did well out there.” Caffrey nodded approvingly with a big smile toward MYOJIN. The Shining Star ran a hand through his golden hair.
“Thanks, congrats to you too and Matei.”
“How you doin’?”
“...I've got a bit of a headache but I'll get through it.”
Caffrey sat down next to him, shaking his head with a knowing look. “That's not what I meant. I recognize something’s a little… off, when I see it. A little self-doubt, maybe?”
MYOJIN sighed and leaned back, “I was so sure that I could get past Syndicate easily- but he nearly had my number. Multiple times in that match. My ego nearly could have cost me everything… I'm just wondering about my future, I guess. Everything seems too good to be true right now- Maybe I'm overthinking, I just don't like how the odds seem to be stacking up.”
“That’s what we have to contend with, MYOJIN. You’re a champion. Shit stacks up against you. It’s because you’re at the top of the mountain right now, everyone rises up to compete. You gotta adapt and overcome- grow with every challenge you face.”
“Right.. What's the saying? Heavy is the head that wears the crown?” He responded, rolling his shoulder with a deep breath.
Caffrey grinned, “Exactly. You got this far, keep pushing to go further.” The older wrestler stood and gave a light pat to MYOJIN's shoulder before heading back down the hallway.
He looked back down at his title. The first he had ever won in XHF, with forty-eight reigns of former champions before him. He not only wanted to live up to the ones who came before him- but exceed them.
Whoever he would face soon enough, could further cement his reign if he could beat them or destroy it if he lost. Another match even bigger than the last.
Though for now? He had earned his week or two to rest.
“Heavy is the head that wears the crown.”
The XHF Junior Heavyweight Champion stood at the balcony of his home in San Diego. The sun beamed down brightly on his face. His title belt rested across his shoulder as he leaned against the railing, his other hand prompted against his chin. Instead of his usual arrogant flair or fierceness, there was a thoughtful look on the prodigy's face. After seeing the results of the Cruiserweight Cup and now knowing who he'd be facing, the champion had an optimistic yet still serious look.
“Last month, last year even, I've been an extremely overconfident person in my abilities. I looked down on the people I faced because I believed that I was untouchable when I started in FIRESIDE. But… recently I've gotten a bit of a wake up call. At Supremacy, I didn't take my opponent as seriously as I should have, and if I hadn't been quick enough to counter him with my Orion submission, my dream could've ended right then and there.” The champion pointed toward his head, which had healed- but the memory of bleeding immensely from that pre-match attack was fresh.
“If I'm to continue, I have to take all opposition I face seriously. I can't afford to let my emotions get in the way. Every person that steps up to me is a threat that I cannot ignore or treat as inferior. Underestimation is possibly one of the most fatal mistakes one can make in this sport. I don't intend to be taken by surprise. This title will stay with me for a long time.”
“And the next person coming for my throne is someone I'm rather really pleased to soon share a ring with.”
“Eron Hunter… Before I say anything else, you might be the best challenger I've faced yet. The first one won his right to face me via a fluke. The second one was handed an opportunity. You went through multiple people. You are good, amazing even. All that time I spent watching NPW with my eyes on Adrien Cochrane, when I should've been focusing more on you. You won an extremely tough tournament to make it here and I applaud that. You've worked hard to get here, Hunter, and I respect that. I respect you- but just because I like you doesn't mean I can go easy on you at all.”
“If anything: I absolutely have to beat you. You may be young like me, but you have an extremely credible history. You were the best Junior Heavyweight Champion of the place you were previously in. I don't have to point out how you've proven yourself in NPW. What better way to further elevate this championship by beating someone equal to my ability?”
“You weigh more than me by 35 pounds. You're taller than me by 4 inches. You definitely have more core strength than me. You're older and thus arguably more experienced. But let me be very clear, Hunter. I will do what I have to do. That previously injured knee of yours? All I see is a bullseye. An easy target. One misplaced kick and I'll have you trapped in my heel hook in the middle of the ring.”
MYOJIN smirked, “But, I'm sure it's not going to be that simple though. You and I? We're going to be putting on one of the best matches NPW might ever see, maybe even a match of the year contender. As serious as I am about making sure I leave once more with this belt, I have to admit that I'm excited. Hunter, I can tell from everything I've seen from you that you will be fun to fight. There's something about you that captures my eye, something about you that I absolutely love. Maybe it's your passion or your showmanship, maybe it's the swift and powerful way you wrestle in the ring. Maybe it's because you're the one person I've faced this far that is actually seeing this championship for what it's worth unlike the others who only saw it as a stepping stone.”
“It'll be an honor to face you, but it'll be an even greater one to defeat. I'm not ready to slow down yet. With this target on my back, I want to keep going until I can't anymore. I want to be able to hold my head high and be the one who restores the Junior Heavyweight title's greatness. I want to set new records. And in order to do that? I have to get through you.”
“I will prevail.”
