We open at a press conference, Isabel Rios seated at a table with microphones before her, dressed in a natty black jacket, white blouse, black skirt and heels combo. On the table next to her? Of course, the Amazons championship belt. A small crowd of reporters sit before her, various recording devices in hand.
Isabel: “Good afternoon everyone, thanks for coming out today. I’m pleased to announce that myself and the good people at High Voltage™ have come together to create a new charity challenge that we’re calling #LiftWeightsFillPlates. Our goal is to raise money for food banks across Canada. Here’s how it works: we’re challenging everyone to post pictures or videos of themselves hitting personal bests at any kind of athletic activity to social media with the aforementioned hashtag. Doesn’t matter if it’s setting a new personal best on your bench or deadlift, a new fastest time on your 100 meter dash or half marathon. Heck, it can be scoring a hat trick at your beer league hockey game or going 5 for 5 at slo-pitch. Whatever it is, High Voltage will donate one dollar for every hashtag used til the end of September to Food Banks Canada.”
“Moreover, I’m personally challenging every professional athlete out there to not only use the hashtag but also donate. To get the ball rolling, I’ve made the first initial donation of $100,000 just this morning. So everyone out there, get off your butts and if you can afford it, get off your wallets, alright? Any questions?”
A few reporters raise their hands, Isabel pointing at the first, who speaks up.
Reporter 1: “Why this charity, Ms. Rios?”
Isabel shrugs.
Isabel: “Everyone needs to eat, simple as that. If I can help folks who are at that point where they can’t afford on their own to keep food on the table, I’m gonna help.”
Isabel points to another reporter.
Reporter 2: “How do you feel about your upcoming title match against Sinclair Godfrey and Commadrix? Are you concerned about losing your belt without being pinned or submitted?”
Isabel blinks at the question, cocking her head to the side a little before replying.
Isabel: “Okay, I’m looking more for questions about the topic at hand but sure, I’ll answer. Look at my month of June. Call To Arms: myself, Lucky Linda, Mistress Discipline, Blaze Freya and Olympia go in and manage to take down a team with not one but two absolute monsters on it in Sticky the Clown and Joe Ghaven. Me and Mistress Discipline roll into round two, handicapped two against three. What happens? I pin Jesse Jamester. I tap out Primal. I almost, almost, as much as almost doesn’t count, ALMOST spiked the NPW North American Double Crown champion Lord Dominicus with the Redtail Driver and that would’ve been three.”
“And then there’s Battle of the Best. I put down Keith Williams, total creep but as accomplished as it gets in the ring XHF, and in that fourway who did I absolutely murder with the Redtail off the top to the floor? Say hi to the guy who made you for me, Sinclair. All of that, those fights, those successes, standing and delivering against some of the best and baddest in all of the XHF and you’re asking me if I’m concerned about facing Commandrix and Sinclair Godfrey with my title on the line?!”
Isabel pauses for a long second before nodding her head.
Isabel “And to that I say yes, I do have a reasonable level of concern going into this match. Commandrix is tough. Sinclair is hungry. Yeah, I believe I’m the favourite in this fight, triple threat rules or not. But being the favourite guarantees nothing. Every single wrestler on every single night has a chance because hey, you never know when a lucky punch or kick might black someone out for four seconds and you only need three to score a pin. You never know when someone might slip coming off the top and bust their leg and not be able to continue. And having two opponents instead of one? It doesn’t make it easier.”
Isabel leans forward, looking into the camera.
Isabel: “But let me be clear. Let me be crystal clear. High Voltage Sparking Strawberry Clear even. Champions make belts and not the other way around and right now? The Amazons championship isn’t just one of the most prestigious belts in SWAT and NPW. It’s one of the most prestigious belts period. As far as I’m concerned this is the women’s championship in XHF, full stop. And that’s because I hold it, I defend it with pride and honour and a zero bullshit mentality. And if anyone out there doesn’t like me saying what I’m saying? Like I’ve said before, get in line and get your shot.”
Isabel gives her words a moment to sink in before addressing the reporters once again.
Isabel: “Okay, any further questions about #LiftWeightsFillPlates?”
We fade out as another reporter raises their hand, gone inaudible as Rios points to the man and he starts to ask his question.
