Darkness, certain and eternal, surrounded him save for a small fledgling flame flickering in the breeze.
So fragile, it seemed a mere gust of wind away from extinction as it cast a pale and wavering light upon his face from below.
Under the orange hue of the flame, the enigma is a ghastly sight.
His face paint is faded, practically worn away in places, making his eyes appear sunken into his skull. What little that remains is cracked and chipping away. The long intricate braids he’d carried his whole career are tied back, with only a few errant strands dangling about his face.
”Donzig…” He sighs. ”…I…I had had such high hopes for you. I truly did.” Disappointment weighs his words down.
”You had power, menace, mystique. In short, you had my attention. You had me watching you from afar, wondering when we would finally meet. When you would seek me out. When you would seek out the answers to all the questions surrounding me.” His pause is punctuated by his stare, long and unwavering as though daring the flame before him to blink. “Was the tournament a fluke? Did I get lucky against Jonnie Valentine? KUMA? Yes, the names are starting to pile up, would yours be next? The anticipation was almost more than I could stand, and then, you spoke…”
Looking up, flames dance in the steel blue eyes of the enigma, matching the fires of his soul. “…and you sounded just like everyone else, like all the others that have come before you trying to put me down. Like all the others who have tried to bury me over the past fifteen years.”
Shaking his head, it’s clear he’s no longer impressed. “No, you’re not different or special, you’re just another talker. You’re the scourge? I signed my death warrant?” He scoffs lightly, unimpressed. ”Please. Spare me your drivel.”
Adding a little fuel to the fire figuratively and literally, the flames grow; their light spreading to the red and black skeletal design stretched across his torso. ”I walked into this company with no allies, no reputation to coast on and am taking it by storm! Alone. Single handedly.”
His voice changes, as does his posture. The hypocrisy of Donzig’s situation hadn’t been lost on him. “You, on the other hand, have no honour…nothing defines you but your own ego. You surround yourself with filth like the Von Krauss’, their clown mercenaries, and their Kross Global Bandits and you honestly believe I fear you…or anyone else on the roster for that matter? Think about that, the lone shadow. Vengador Oscuro, the dark avenger. The solitary reaper. The man that needs no one. That is the man you attempt to threaten?”
A slight chuckle and a shake of his head cause his gaze to drop back to the flames. “No, you’re just another talker and when you get in the ring with me you’ll understand a fact that your KGB’s precious Esmeralda already knows.”
Waving his right hand dismissively, it serves to fan the flames. “Go, go and ask her what I am, and even that succubus will be forced to admit that I’m too much for you.” Finality, and inevitability bring confidence to his somber tone. “It won’t be easy…not by any means, but I wouldn’t want it any other way…a great man once said ‘do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”
As the words of Bruce Lee slip from his mouth, and even though his dragon-like approach to combat had been inspired by Lee, he brings himself back to Donzig’s own words. “You speak of Martin Luther’s Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences, of the sacking of Rome and of Stamford Bridge. Since you seem so concerned with the past let me give you a bit more of a relevant example, one from a simpler time; nineteen seventeen.” His voice deepens slightly as he continues but not for menace, it was in reverence. “Two ships collided, just as we will, in Halifax…and the resulting explosion levelled everything in it’s path. Ships from the harbour were grounded, trees snapped in half, iron rails were bent. Such was the force of the blast, that entire buildings were destroyed in an instant…it was the largest man made explosion of it’s time! They called it the ‘Halifax Explosion’. This will be my finest work in NPW to date, the new Halifax Explosion! I’m going to show you what the Openweight Championship’s legacy will be, and here’s a hint…it won’t be as some bobble for the KGB. I will not allow that to happen!”
Passion erupts from the enigma, Donzig had awakened a sleeping dragon. One hungry for battle. “This championship will be about opportunity, chance, and belief. It will reflect the opportunity I was given. Gus Arnold and NPW gave me a chance, sight unseen and I won’t forget that.” Holding up a single finger, he was counting off the future of the Northern Openweight Championship.
“This championship will reflect the chance NPW took on me; I could have won the Northern Openweight Tournament, collected my prize and left. I had no contract and was under no obligation to stay and still NPW took a chance on me. I won’t forget that.” That made two as a second finger joins the first.
“Lastly…” He said, determination etched on his face. “…this championship will symbolize the belief that the person holding it is one of the very best this entire sport has to offer! The truly elite! Those destined for the very highest of peaks. And that goal doesn’t end with you…” Bringing the third finger up beside the two, just like at Honor, it would not be easy, but Donzig’s own words would lead him to a Twisted Truth…and one, two, three.
