The sun is rising as Rain Blackheart unlocks the door to his apartment. As the door swings open he grabs the pile of envelopes from the mailbox and tosses them onto the nearby table. He walks over to his recliner, drops his bag and collapses into the chair. Rain reaches into his pocket, pulls out his phone and realizes the battery is dead. He connects it to a charging cable on the end table beside his chair and powers it on. It begins to ding over and over, once for every text and audio message that had collected during his trip from France back to the states.
Rain flicks through the texts, many are congratulating him on the match and his victory at XHF: End of Days and how great they thought his match with DeHaven was. He smiles until he gets to some messages from Bea…
“Good to see you are reaching your potential, but I wish you’d return my messages”
“You won! We should celebrate when you get back to the states if you can find time for me.”
“I guess your traveling now. Call me when you get in.”
Rain’s demeanor changes, almost to a look of indifference towards his fiancée’s messages. He decides to listen to the vocal messages, and again there are congratulations and several from a very inebriated Kid Diaz telling him about the party they are planning for the next Friday Night Free for All. And then there are several from Bea, he listens to the first 2 then deletes all of them. He unzips his bag and takes out the UPW Sin City title belt. Rain holds it, stares at it and admires the spoils of his victory. His phone starts ringing, and it’s Bea. Rain sighs and then answers.
Rain: “Hello.”
Bea: “You made it! What happened? Why did you respond?”
Rain: “I just got home from a jumping red eyes until I got back to Las Vegas and my phone went dead sometime over the Atlantic. I’m exhausted and trying to unwind before I crash.”
Bea: “Oh. Should I call you back?”
Rain: “Just say what you want to say.”
Bea: “What is happening to you? I feel like you’ve been avoiding me for weeks now.”
Rain: “That’s because I have been. My focus is on my career and that focus has gotten me where I am.”
Bea: “The champion of a gimmick title?”
Rain: “Excuse me? In case you forgot I just represented UPW in front of a global audience and gave them a match for the ages. I just gave a new audience reasons to start streaming UPW shows, I just increased ticket sells because now they want to see the one who tore the house down and stole the show. I completed the Black Hand’s domination of UP Wrestling and I intend to keep upping my game every single day. This title is going to push me and teach me to adapt to any possible scenario and make me an even better wrestler. And if you can’t understand that then you need to just hang up right now.”
Bea: “This is what I’m talking about. You forget I’m a part of your life. It’s like you only want to focus on yourself and your wrestling.”
Rain: “Exactly. Because before I couldn’t have reached this level. But now I’m not going to stop until I physically cannot go any more. This is my life. Being a member of the Black Hand. Being Sin City Champion. Being at the Apex of professional wrestling. This IS my life, and that is all I need.”
Bea: “Wha… are you saying….?”
Rain: “I’m saying that wrestling is who I am and I can’t afford to lose my focus. I am Sin City Champion and I have a Crimson Kruger breathing down my neck, a self-entitled CJ Walker bitching and moaning, a very pissed on Ragsdale wanting some revenge, a whole roster wanting to prove their mettle against the new standard bearer and a celebration to plan for the Black Hand’s dominance. So yeah, there’s not much room for anything I deem unnecessary.”
Bea: “Oh. I see. Then I won’t bother you any further.”
Rain: “Fine. I need to get some sleep so yeah, you know how to hang up the phone right? It’s like this…”
Rain taps the phone and ends the call, then he taps to block Bea’s call and messages. He holds up the Sin City belt and smiles. He then sets it back in the bag and prepares to get some sleep.
