The Academy Gym, New Orleans, LA.
We fade in to the modest gym that belongs now XHF stable, The Academy. Trixie Mars, fresh off her debut win in UP Wrestling’s Friday Night Free for All, is in the ring, working on her positioning and awareness. She shadow wrestles with a few positions and placements before she’s interrupted by two people, the first, a now familiar face to UPW viewers in Rob Arnold.
“Trix, come take five, I want you to meet somebody.” Arnold instructs gently. Mars finishes what she was doing almost methodically, apparently not one to stop mid set, and slides out of the ring to meet Arnold and the second man. The second man was a large, well built man who looked warm and welcoming, yet there was an air of “don’t fuck with him” surrounding him. Mars recognised this so proceeded somewhat cautiously. “This is Leon Chant, one of my longest friends in this business and my number two around here.”
Mars shakes his hand with smile, albeit a cautious one, she didn’t want to come over as over eager, but she knew who he was, and the reputation he rightly carried. Former two time NLW Champion, Chant nodded back at her in acknowledgement before looking back to Arnold.
“Wait a minute, since when were we friends?” His tone slightly mocking.
“Well, we are friends.” Is Arnold’s indignant reply, somewhat offended that Chant would question him on this point.
“By your definition, sure, whatever you say boss.” He rolls his eyes playfully, Arnold doesn’t notice, but Mars does and flashes a polite smile to Chant. “Anyway, Trixie, welcome to the mad house, Rob’s told me about you and I got to watch your match against Bubba, you’ve got a hell of a career ahead of you, and anything I can do to help you, you just need to let me know.”
“Thank you.”
“It’s no problem, how are you feeling after the win? Always good to get the first one under the belt.”
“Obviously I’m happy, but it’s not really what I came here and to UP Wrestling for, I came to really make a mark, and you don’t do that by facing the Bubba’s of the world, you do that by taking on and taking out bigger and better challenges.”
“Told you she had the ambition.” Arnold smugly adds.
“You did, boss, you certainly did. And that’s exactly the sort of spirit we have here Trixie, we know that every one of us here has the potential and ability to play with the big boys and girls in the XHF, and together? Sky’s the damn limit. Who’s next for you?”
“They’ve put me in a four way, I’m up against Smilin’ Jack Ruby-”
“Stereotypical cowboy.” Arnold overlays and informs Chant.
“…David Berg-”
“Cliché Jew.”
“And finally, Isabella Von Krauss.”
“Another Von Krauss?” Chant asks Arnold.
“Yeah…but in the sense that if Trix started calling herself Trixie Arnold.”
They all look at each other and pull a creeped out face.
“Yeah, that’s weird.”
“The best bit though? There’s a shot at the Sin City for the winner.”
“Nice! Well clearly you made the same impression on the UPW brass as you did with Rob and myself, so make it count. I think you’re gonna’ fit in well here, we’re a team, but in time you’ll see we’re a family too. Rob, Riley and myself have each other’s backs, and now we have yours too, we expect the same from you, understood?”
“Crystal clear, Leon. One question though, where is Riley? I was hoping to meet him too.” Trixie coyly asks. Arnold and Chant look at each other and Arnold gives Leon the smallest of head shakes, his eyebrows raised almost to the point they are off his face, Chant knows the drill here, make an excuse.
“Uhhh, well he wanted to be here but he’s just rehabbing his knee today, we have a match this weekend and we’re going to need to be at our best.” He slowly eeks the lie out, Arnold just nods along all the while.
“Oh, I understand, I’m just eager to make myself acquainted with all of y’all, since I’m plannin’ on being here a long time, you know?” Both men nod. “But hey, if you guys are in action this weekend, maybe I could come along to The Lakefront Arena and see you in action, it would be great to see you both in action!”
“….yeah that could-” Chant is cut off by Arnold’s hand slapping down on his shoulder.
“That would be a great idea, but I’ve booked your flight for that very morning, so maybe next time?”
Massive awkward silence. Trixie isn’t dumb, but she’s no way in a position to argue the point.
“Sure, next time though?”
“We’ll work it all out, yeah.” Arnold’s non answer is the best she’s going to get for now. “Anyway, Leon, you need to go check in on Riley…”
He doesn’t, and Leon’s brief confusion before he catches up on the façade is staggering, but he nods and gets up to speed on the bit.
“Yeah, that’s right, but Trixie, really good to meet you and we’ll catch up properly very soon, Rob wants me to run some drills with you so we’ll get that going as soon as we can, maybe even tomorrow?” Trixie nods affirmatively. “Great!”
“Leon, I’ll walk you out.” Arnold spins his larger associate around and they begin to walk away, Trixie puts up a hand of goodbye but it’s pointless, Rob has marched Chant away pretty quickly and is quietly telling him off…not that quietly though, despite being off camera, the sound is picked up.
“Leon, come on mate! You know that those two millennials together is going to be a nightmare…let’s enjoy the fucking peace whilst we can.”
“I know, I know, I wasn’t thinking, she’s nice and I was being polite!”
“Fuck being polite, think about our damn sanity! I still don’t understand half of the things Richards says.”
“I know, I know. But how much longer will you actually be able to keep them apart?”
“…as long as I can Leon.”
The voices start fading away and the camera zooms in more on Trixie’s face as she watches the pair leave. Hearing everything, she seems a bit taken aback to start with.
“Nice meeting you Leon!” She then slowly begins to smirk as the conversation fades away. “I think I’m gonna’ do okay here…”
