You just couldn’t help yourself could you Spike?
You couldn’t just have a straight up match with me could you?
No, of course not.
You’re the God of Xtreme and you have to prove it don’t you?
Now, I know what you’re going to say, “You stabbed me, I just want the chance to stab you back.”
That’s just an easy excuse to get the upper hand because you know in your heart, you can’t beat me in a straight up match.
Twice we’ve faced one on one. In GUNS for the X*Crown we faced straight up and you lost. I outsmarted you because I knew you wouldn’t be able to help it. It’s who you are. It’s in your nature. You can’t help but use a weapon when it’s introduced.
Round two, you caught me off guard. You chased me out of the backstage and into the ring. I wasn’t ready. You threw me off of my game. I’ll admit it, too. I didn’t stab you as some elaborate plan thanks to the training from Zoran. No. I stabbed you out of sheer instinct because I still had the knife on me by accident because you caught me off guard. My instincts saved me for the moment, but ultimately you pulled it out.
Months have gone by now Spike. I’ve stabbed someone with that plan fully in mind. I’ve grown. I’ve trained. What do you think is going to happen now that I’m fully prepared and got the first one out of the way?
Thump, thump, thump.
We hear repeated thumps before the scene overstates the screen. We see and empty gym. The place is deserted except for one man. The young El Rey stabbing at a heavy bag.
Thump, thump, thump.
He continues beating away at the heavy bag until he’s stopped by a voice from off screen.
Venom: Is that really helping?
The young El Rey stops and turns as his father walks into the gym and approaching his son. El Rey steps back from the heavy bag and says to his dad.
El Rey: Practice makes perfect in everything.
Venom: That’s true, but you seem pretty ineffective. There’s no sand on the ground from your stabs.
El Rey: Of course there’s not. Why would I ruin a perfectly good heavy bag?
Venom: Makes sense, but isn’t that the knife Zoran gave you after your first stab?
El Rey: Oh no. It looks the same huh? Yeah this is the one he trained me with. It’s retractable for training like this so I don’t ruin a good heavy bag or wound my sparring partner. The one Zoran presented me looks just like it.
Venom: Huh, interesting.
El Rey: Right? That way no one knows which one I’m using and I’d be comfortable handling the real one because it’s so similar to the real one. I’m sure Zoran didn’t expect me to stab him in the back with it when he gave it to me.
Venom: Huh, interesting.
El Rey: Are you broken or something? You usually say a lot more. I half expected you to try and talk me out of my match with Spike.
Venom: Yeah.
El Rey: I know. You gave me the speech before the first time I faced him. “He’s dangerous with or without a weapon.” “He’s a hall of famer in this business.” I have heard it all. I know what I’m getting into.
Venom: Okay.
El Rey: I’ve got it all under control. That’s why I’m training. Training harder than I ever have. I’m taking everything you’ve taught me. Everything Scorps taught me. Everything Uncle Charlie taught me. Especially everything Zoran taught me. I’m taking it all and putting it together all while studying footage of Spike at his worst and his best. I’m prepared dad, you don’t need to worry and lecture me.
Venom: Okay, good.
Venom slaps his son on the shoulder and turns and walks away.
Venom: Keep up the good work son.
As he walks away El Rey looks perplexed. His dad usually doesn’t let up that easy. We follow Venom as he opens the door and exits. Before we leave we hear him mumble.
Venom: Could it be? Nah.
The door to the gym closes behind him and we cut to black.
I know you’ve been to hell and back in this business. Literally.
You think there’s no way I can stack up with you. You’ve been through it all. Family member turbulence, loss of loved ones, and pretty much everything you can imagine. No way this “kid” could stack up.
Well I’ve got words for you Spike.
You don’t know me.
You don’t know my struggle.
You don’t know the path that got me here.
Christmas of 2016, I was 14-years-old, my brother and I were excited for presents, but my dad was excited about something else. Mongo got tired of living off his other businesses and DVD sales and was starting the XHF Network. We were all happy for him. Dad hasn’t worked in-ring since he left nCw.
A few months later, though, dad was overwhelmed with the Network. He stopped showing up to my brother and my wrestling matches and baseball games. Soon he turned our family gym into a wrestling show. He had completely changed. It was like we lost him to the wrestling business, the XHF Network, during the most important time in our lives.
Then we actually lost him.
At the end of Season One of GUNS he died. He went off a cliff in the season finale. We held a funeral. I cried. My brother cried. My mom cried. We buried an empty casket.
For months we grieved our loss. I almost went down a bad path. My brother, he did. Then, he was back. He didn’t die. It was a stunt to get over.
He says it wasn’t, it was real, but we both know the business don’t we Spike?
When my dad showed back up my brother straightened up. My mom popped back too. Me, though, that changed me.
I got darker. I got distant. My goal was no longer to play baseball professionally. My goal was no longer to make my dad proud and blaze my own trail. No. My goal was now to eclipse my dad. To show him he made a mistake putting me on the back burner. It was my goal to show him what he missed out on, and I would achieve that goal without him.
So no, Spike, I may not have as much life experience as you. Yes, Spike, I am just another rich kid. But, unlike you and everyone else think, I have experienced life. I’ve experienced loss. I’ve had loved ones let me down. I’ve been through more than you think I have.
So keep looking passed me.
Keep thinking you know who and what I am.
I will continue to surprise you and everyone else who wants to put me in one box.
And just like those before you who underestimated me, including you, I will surprise you with my hand raised as the winner.
We open on a new scene. Venom is sitting in his office at GUNS arena watching something on a monitor. We can’t make out what exactly, but Venom keeps rewinding and playing the same stretch of video when James Mueller walks in, but Venom doesn’t event look up from the screen.
Mueller: What ya watching? Footage of our next tag opponents?
Venom: Nah.
Mueller: GUNS Fight Club footage then? Good because you kinda suck.
Venom: Not that.
Mueller: Then what’s so important you’re late for training. You’re never let.
Venom perks up a little bit and takes his eyes off the screen finally and smiles at his partner.
Venom: Nothing important. I just got sucked in on something and lost track of the time. I’m sorry I was late. Let’s go.
Venom gets up from his chair and exits with his partner, but we don’t follow him. Instead we focus on the screen where Venom left it paused. End of Days, round one, El Rey is paused with a knife in the back of Zoran.
