INT. ARENA IN WOLVERHAMPTON – MEDIA ROOM
The press is still agog over Wesley Crane’s interview session. They’re chattering among themselves until ANTHONY JORDAN walks into the room. As everyone tries to get his attention, he waves them off as he walks to the podium.
JORDAN
I am here to provide an update on Kalmin Watts. First, he has cleared concussion protocol. There have been no major head injuries. Second, he is being stitched up. There was the gash by his eye in addition to the swelling. He has been busted up in amateur wrestling, so there is hope he will bounce back quickly for War Games in Hardkore World.
(sighs)
Okay, I will take some questions.
STONE
How did you feel about having to leave ringside in your client’s biggest match to date?
JORDAN
(glares at Veronica for a few seconds before tersely answering)
STONE
It definitely seemed like some mind games from Wesley Crane. If you were there, could you have stopped him from using the wrench?
JORDAN
(working to keep his composure)
(dryly) You mean “Would I have stopped the assault with a deadly weapon?”? Yes, I like to think I would have intervened.
STONE
I ask because…
JORDAN
(clearly done with Stone) Next question.
DAVIS
Can you take any moral victories away from this match? Kalmin competed well. Do you think you can build on it?
JORDAN
(rubbing the bridge of his nose) This is a results-based sport. The record book treats the match the same regardless of whether it lasted thirty seconds or thirty minutes. It is my hope that Kalmin learned something that will benefit him in the future. We will go over the tape and see what we can take from this match.
(beat)
Kalmin has indirectly fought Crane a few times and will again soon. This was their first direct match. Things are the same as they were back in September: they are even as competitors. Wesley Crane’s success is the direct result of his willingness to break the rules and lots of money spent on public relations. He got enough people to say that he is a big deal and willed it into being.
DAVIS
Are you saying that Wesley Crane is illegitimate?
JORDAN
I am saying he bought his way to the top and took a shortcut. That does not make him better than Kalmin Watts. He had a chance to do that and failed.
JACKSON
Is “failed” fair to say?
JORDAN
(annoyed) He weighed his fist down with an industrial wrench and caught Kalmin in the face. That is in clear violation of the rules. If Wesley Crane was the better man, he would have won fair and square. If Wesley Crane had the talent to win fair and square, then he would have. None of that happened tonight.
JACKSON
I think many in WUK took notice because, at Dominion, Kalmin is a ladder match with five others for the number one contendership for the World Title.
JORDAN
(even more annoyed) So what is hanging above the ring? The concept of being the number one contender?
JACKSON
(stifling laughter) I don’t think so.
JORDAN
So no British TV TItle defense?
JACKSON
Ummm…no.
Before Jordan can reply, a commotion is heard. Kalmin Watts quickly enters the shot. The reporters loudly try to get his attention. Jordan covers the microphone and stands up. He looks displeased and would prefer that Watts continue to get medical treatment. Watts’s eye is still swollen, but the cut has been cleaned and stitched. Realizing he can’t win, Jordan briefs Watts on the interview and stands aside.
WATTS
I rushed over here hoping to find Wesley Crane because we aren’t done! He might think this is the end of things, but I’m going to get him in the ring again! He thinks he can hit me with a wrench, and I’ll just let it go? Crane, you got hell coming to you! I don’t care if I have to go through the whole High Rollers Club! I’ll fight them all!
The press seizes on that statement and tries to hound Watts. Jordan leans over to get to the microphone. He motions for the press to sit and get organized. They jockey for his attention. Jordan makes a show of deliberately ignored Veronica Stone and selects someone else. He moves out of the way and lets Watts have his place behind the podium.
JOHNSON
Jack Johnson from Past the Mat. Kalmin, have you been briefed on your Dominion match? If so, what are your thoughts?
WATTS
It’s the quickest way to Wesley Crane. I don’t know who’s in it, but I’m gonna run through all of them to get my rematch! I promise you there’s no one in this match that wants this more than I do!
JOHNSON
What if Wesley Crane loses the title to Ronnie Long?
WATTS
Then I’ll beat Long for the title and Crane will have to fight me, if he wants his title back. I don’t care how I get my match, but I’m getting my match!
JOHNSON
What about the British TV Title?
WATTS
Hang it up above the ring for the ladder match! I’ll put it on the line. Hell, I’ll unify the titles. Whatever it takes to get my hands on Crane!
Watts storms off as Jordan follows him trying to calm him down.
