The camera flashes go off at a nigh on epilepsy inducing level in the JROK backstage media area as Brendan Harding walks in, grinning exhaustedly. The newly crowned 2022 King of Hokkaido tournament winner has his trophy resting against his shoulder before setting it down at the table. He picks up a water bottle and empties it over his head before sitting down.
So, I guess tonight went pretty well.
The assembled journalists dutifully laugh at the understatement, before Brendan points to one to begin the questioning.
Mr Harding, congratulations on winning King of Hokkaido. Any comments on the tournament as a whole?
Well, firstly props to Miguel Diaz. He wrestled two matches tonight and still gave me a hard fight. But unfortunately for him, this was my year. I've torn through a tough field undefeated and I am just getting started. Dr Zen is now King Zen and he is coming for the gold.
He gestures to the next participant.
Your thoughts on the comments made by Dylan Black prior to the final?
Brendan laughs.
Dylan does love to run his mouth, doesn't he? Yes, he holds two wins over me, but it's surprising given his own long history of being underestimated he isn't smarter about newfangled concepts like 'improvement' and 'development'. The Brendan Harding of yesterday is not the Brendan Harding of today, who will not be the Brendan Harding of tomorrow. Maybe he'll learn something from being a second away from defeat to Scott Fargo tonight, but I somehow doubt it.
Brendan takes a quick swig from another bottle of water as the audience digest that before continuing.
Okay, I got time for one more before I need to go get showered and dressed for the 'surprise' celebration party I fear Randy Angel's organising. Appropriately enough, gentleman in the Super Sake t-shirt?
Any plans for the one million yen prize money.
Yes. After the bullshit events in the US of the past couple of days I will be donating the full prize to reproductive rights organisations. This comes after my lawyers advised me against my original plan of offering a reward for firebombing Clarence Thomas' house.
That gets uneasy laughs, then the flashes flash once more as Brendan stands and departs with his trophy.
