In 1936 the United States was at the height of the Great Depression and during that time a team of skull rowers captivated the world by winning the gold medal in skulling in Berlin which made Adolph Hitler so angry he stomped out. However, all successful sports stories have to start somewhere and in Boys in the Boat it starts with one individual named Rance. Rance is a penniless young man looking for a job and he vows to work any job. One night he encounters his friend who convinces him to work attend this university since they pay young men to skull. Rance accepts and enrolls at the university and while there he keeps asking when he's going to get paid. Obviously, he didn't realize nobody gets paid to be on sports teams in college...Okay if he only had a time machine he would have gotten paid today. Anyway, Rance goes out for the skulling team and despite a rocky start he manages to make an impression on both the coach and teammates. He also encounters this old man who polishes and takes care of the skull boats and in a kind of Rocky and Miyagi like bond. Rance learns and the old man George Pocock helps guide him and Rance becomes better and better earning the respect of his teammates. They start winning competitions and they even qualify for the national finals that takes them to the Olympics and to Berlin. Yet in order to get there they need money and nobody wants to give them any so they hold one of the first ever telethons and even the man who refused to front them the money writes a check to cover the remaining money needed. When they arrive you can tell the hostile atmosphere, which is buried under the facade of the Olympic spirit, and what these underdogs from America are up against. They make it through each Olympic heat as does their German nemesis leading to their showdown. You can tell by the introduction how the movie ends. I enjoyed the interaction of the characters especially Coach Ulbrickson played by Joel Edgerton and Rance Callum Turner as well as Turner and Pocock. There is also a cameo appearance by Jesse Owens played by Jyuddah Jaymes who also wishes them luck and Rance returns the luck. Boys in the Boat deserves to be nominated for Best Picture and Best Performances when the nominations are made. Since this is the French Olympics 2024 what better movie to help create some early Olympic and patriotic spirit than Boys in the Boat. Good luck and row to an Oscar victory.
