The last time Godzilla and King Kong starred in a movie together they tore up the screen and it didn't go to a draw like in 1969 when they first met. Supposedly Godzilla almost gave Kong a beat down in the reboot and in Godzilla vs. Kong The New Empire they meet again but like a tag team put together with two hated rivals they have to coexist. Everything begins with King Kong on Skull Island going about his normal routine at peace with himself and alone and wondering if there are others like him. Little does he know there is a hidden lair where there are others like him who are slaves to this evil primate named Scar King who wields this blue crystal weapon on a chain as well as an ice dragon, whom he keeps under controlled by the weapon. One day a baby primate manages to escape and is chased by Scar King's minions and runs into Kong. Kong encounters them and deals with them and despite not wanting to adopt the young primate he takes him with him. Meanwhile Godzilla is seen sleeping in the Roman Coliseum and suddenly wakes up and leaves Rome sensing trouble which always happens in a Godzilla movie. At the same time Doctor Ilene Andrews played by Rebecca Hall, who has adopted this girl from this tribe called the Iwi named Jia played by Kaylee Hottle. They set off with an animal vet, a conspiracy theorist and a pilot, who gets eaten by a plant on Skull Island. They encounter Kong, who was injured by Scar King's minions and the good doctor calls in a medical team who gives him what looks like a sling that gladiators used as well as fix his tooth. In the meantime Godzilla is refueling his power by destroying a power plant in France before targeting and killing this powerful dragon and taking his powers. Along the way there is also an appearance by Mothra which isn't explained and a myth about Scar King taking on Godzilla. Yet the final confrontation doesn't involve Godzilla and King Kong vs. Scar King and the ice dragon but not before Kong and Godzilla get into an all out brawl in Egypt until Mothra comes between them and like a tornado tag team match all four go after each other. There's even a portal that sends all four to Brazil where they continue going at it. Too bad they weren't placed in a cage or the octagon. The acting is great with Rebecca Hall channeling her inner Sigourney Weaver while looking like a young Carol Burnett. The best performance is Kaylee Hottle with her silent but emotional performance as the successor of the Iwi. Once again King Kong and Godzilla are on spot despite but the young primate whom Kong adopts as his own steals the spotlight from them. I loved this movie and I can't wait to see if there is another team up. If there was a mistake it involved a reference in one of the previous movies involving a mention of Mecha Godzilla in the previous Godzilla movie. The monster in that one was Mecha King Ghidhra the three headed dragon from previous Godzilla movies in the sixties and seventies. I can't wait for the next team up if they can get them on board without them having a monster sized dispute who should get top billing.
