~The transmission clicks on and we are treated to an unusual sight. The ending to a movie. Big Hero 6 to be specific. *No Spoilers!* Suddenly it clicks again and we are treated to the scene from Spider-Man where Peter gets that speech from his Uncle. You know the one. It clicks over to the prophecy scene with Slowking on the mountain with the kids from Pokemon 2000. *I’m named for a pokemon, it was gonna pop up eventually* Suddenly it clicks to black and the camera zooms back and we see it was a TV being watched by someone in a chair. We can’t see him because of the back of the chair and the lighting. We see him reach down and grab a mask from a nearby table and put it on before he stands up and walks to the camera. He walks past it and sits down at a dining room table. It is Gebin and he is joined by Esmur who is already at the table.~
”The channels at this hotel are not what I expected. There sure is a lot of sentimental drivel on the tube tonight.”
”Yes well, it speaks very well to our past lives. And very well to my opponents this Friday. The movies on the squawk box all had a certain theme I think you’d have to be dense to miss. … So for my opponents let me elaborate. Hero worship is a powerful addiction in culture today. Everyone is addicted to the silver screen adaptations of their favorite character tropes. What was the last movie you saw? Incredibles 2? Ant-Man and Wasp? Black Panther? Infinity War? Justice League? Ok how about Jurassic World? How about Star Wars? Every single one of the big blockbusters has some kind of hero complex. You can’t just have good characters and solve the plot. Some one or ones must go above and beyond the normal bounds of human ability and risk themselves to save the world or their friends. It is an unreachable aspiration for many people. And you have so many ways of reaching that hero plateau. Some are destined, some have unnatural gifts, some use their natural gifts to technologically advance, … and some are infected with a bloodborne pathogen that somehow lets you levitate things. Some use their own agency, others trick or coerce lesser beings to do their work for them. But it all boils down to that person or group doing the impossible and becoming heroes.”
”Gebin, that is a tale as old as time. Since bygone eras humans have always imagined themselves the heroes and worshipped them. Cave drawings of the mighty hunter and his pack that took down the mammoth. And when that became commonplace, tales of the humans who walked among the Gods. Failing that, how about the Gods themselves playing the hero in the story to save the humans? A Homeric trope if ever there was one. It comes from a deep-seated desire ingrained in the minds, hearts, and souls … if you subscribe to that phenomenon … of all humans. We don’t know why we are enthralled by tales of those like us doing tasks that seem immeasurably difficult or laying oneself on the line and enriching the lives of everyone else. It all comes down to two things. Fame. And self-centrism.”
”Yes of course. All humans deep down want to see themselves as the hero of the story and seeing others doing it makes them cling to hope. Everyone has to be the protagonist in their own tale and let nobody else take that right from them. We are a predictable lot. This narcissistic call to arms that beckons the weak minded and strong bodied alike. Nobody wants to be the guy who helped donate money to fund a cure for cancer. They want to be the one who FINDS the cure. The fact that a cure exists would not be enough for them but their name MUST be associated with it. This need to be remembered … no no not just remembered … revered … is frankly sickening. Everyone has to be the hero of the tale, and it isn’t enough to just be at the center of the story, you have to save everyone in the process. Your life is meaningless if people generations hence don’t speak of you in hushed tones for how superior and amazing you were. People you will never meet. People who will begin to wonder if you ever existed or if you are just another story told by parents to their sick, fat, frail children to give them hope and convince them to hold off on eating those Cheetos just for one more hour.”
~Esmur stands up, clearly imitating someone with a microphone as if interviewing Gebin~
”But Mister Gebin, isn’t that just the same as you two trying to win matches, build credibility, and become tag champions?”
”A valid point, but an incorrect assumption. To all you naysayers and haters who would love nothing more than to sit at your keyboards and type vitriol into our email accounts about hypocrites and the like, think about this. Do you know who we are? Do you know what we do? If I walk off camera, take off this mask and outfit and leave the arena … would you be able to walk up to me and say my name and recognize me? Because when the day is done and the careers are over that is what we will do. Walk into the sunset. And nobody will know who we truly are. There is no fame to be had. Sure the names Gebin and Esmur, the team Nihilists, will be etched into history. But that will not follow us. And the mystery of ‘Where are they now?’ will drive people to talk about us and rewatch all we say and subliminally take in the message we intend to give to you all. Watching our promos to look for clues. Trying to see if we are people you may know from home. Or from a past life. But then if the answer is we are just two guys the XHF has never seen before nor will see again when we fade away … would that satisfy you? Or would that need to worship your heroes override your sense of judgment and make you delirious as you dig for clues that just aren’t there?”
”People love to be associated with greatness. If they cannot be the hero themselves, they have to be the sidekick, or the people who knew the hero before they were as such. Something needs to be there to claim as your own so some of that fame, some of that glory can be yours. That fame teat must be suckled at all times or surely you all will dry up into husks. You see it with religion … missions and conversions. Trying to make sure that YOUR idea is right. You can’t possibly be in error, after all it is your story. Everyone else must be wrong. And to be famous you need to convince them. You need to be the one who gets everyone to realize the glory of Thor, the eminence of Yahweh, the clarity of Muhammad, the peace of Buddha, or the nothingness in your heart.”
”Make no mistake, we were once just like you all. We craved that attention and we wanted everyone to hear OUR message and nobody else’s. We would not rest until everyone agreed with us and knew we were the reason why. And yet no good came of it. We suckled at the teat of fame and notoriety. Selfishly, we looked outward for purpose and tried to make ourselves like the golden idols in stories and legends. But we were failures. We had no power, we were laughed out of buildings and towns. And now we see the world for the dark and ugly place it truly is. And while we still have a message, and a hope that you will see it our way … we know now that it is not our decision to make it that way. It is our job to teach by example, and to use the quirks in humanity for your own good. Our true names will never be engraved in the stone tablets that are your minds. But the ideas we speak of will burrow and live there. The words we say will be borne by the actions we take. And the fame that comes from the titles? It is only to help spread the message as far as it can go. And whether you choose to hear it and then choose to accept it? That is beyond our control and frankly … this doesn’t worry us. We don’t need to be the heroes here. Or the villains. We need to be the rock, the steady guiding hand that others use to find their own way. Some will find the truth and some will further sink into their preconceived ideas of how life must be.”
”And so it goes that the emissaries of emptiness, the notaries of nothingness, the voices of the void … must teach this lesson of the folly of man and his quest for fame … to two men who see themselves as the ‘hometown heroes’. Cassidy, Justice … it is truly sad that you define yourself based solely on the love of the hicks in some small town. Or in the case of Justice, an entire state that he somehow believes he is the spokesman for. A ‘BRO’ by any other name … is still a fool. You made your name as the local hero, the hometown boy, the first State of Ohio champion. And that was enough for you. And now you and another local boy are trying to make it big to show everyone in your hometown that you are doing this for THEM! Because YOU are so superior, they are too! Share in my glory and in doing so tell me how great I am!”
”But it is all pointless in the end. We have walked this path and it leads to misery. Despite what you may think about us, we thoroughly enjoy doing what we do. We are living our dreams and sharing our new knowledge and worldview with everyone. Just because there is no meaning behind WHY we are here and there may be nothing after we are no longer here, doesn’t preclude us from enjoying life to the fullest in the here and now. And that is really what is all about isn’t it? Enjoying the here and now. And taking advantage of the opportunities gifted to you. A chance to show a new hire the rigors of playing with the advanced class. A chance to defeat yet another hero decked out in gold. A chance to show that notoriety is nothing if you don’t do something with it. You better believe that we will show you something you CAN actually believe in Friday. Not heroes, not fame, not the admiration of the jealous masses, but the sheer ecstasy that comes from proving a point, for no reason other than you can and you should. I will walk out victorious. And you will all have another reason to go back and watch the tapes, see how I work, here what I say. And know that even heroes … fade away. But the nothingness they become … is eternal.”
