“10 PM on a Friday Night, and he’s nowhere to be seen...” The words defeatedly escape Alyssa’s lips as she looks at a clock on the wall. A romantic candle lit dinner sits, uneaten in the otherwise dark dining room. After a few more minutes of sitting on her phone, she finally gets frustrated and starts cleaning up the dishes.
As she enters the kitchen, she flicks on the lights, illuminating the laminated floors, and immaculately clean counter tops. After setting the plates down, she decides to begin scrubbing the pots and pans that had been soaking in the sink.
“Spent all day cleaning the house, cooking a meal, trying to just give him a nice quiet place to come home and settle down!” Alyssa’s words are strained, as she tries expelling her anger into the scrubbing strokes. It isn’t long before her aggression causes her to knock over a wine glass, causing it to shatter on the kitchen floor.
“Fuck sakes...” Alyssa lets out a deep sigh as her head falls back. She takes a moment to take a deep breath and calm down, before getting a broom and sweeping up the glass. Before she dumps the glass into the garbage, she freezes. A quizzical looks spreads on her face as she thinks she sees movement outside the kitchen window.
“If he came home just as I finish cleaning up, I swear to god...” She pours the glass into the trash bin, setting the broom and dust pan aside, before going to check on the movement outside. “Hello? Is someone out there?” Silence responds as she tries to see into the darkness. Before too long, she softly shakes her head as she returns inside. “I guess I must have been seeing things.”
When she re-enters the house, she decides to leave the rest of the dirty dishes for the morning, and go to bed. “He’d better hope I’m asleep when he gets back.” Alyssa continues mumbling to herself, angrily as she prepares for bed. When she finally crawls into bed, she spares one final look at the clock on her bedside table. She stares at it for a long time, before rolling over and finally falling asleep.
~
As Alyssa slowly started to wake up, she immediately noticed things were wrong. Her eyes were open but she couldn’t see. She was suddenly very awake as her situation became immediately serious. She was clearly tied to some type of chair, with a gag in her mouth, and a blind fold on. She tried calling for help, but could hardly make any real sounds while gagged. She immediately began pulling and fighting against the restraints tied around her limbs, when a voice suddenly greeted her.
“Whoa-Ho, settle down there tiger, you’re gonna leave bruises on your wrist. I don’t want people to think I was beating you.” Alyssa’s hands tightly gripped the arm of the chair, as she immediately recognizes the voice. Only Kintaru would be stupid enough to break into D’s house. “Oh, I know that look. You know who I am, don’t you? Damn, I knew I should have used the voice changer. Well, since the mystique is gone...”
Kintaru gently removes the blindfold on Alyssa’s head, blinding her with a floodlight in the process. She recoils heavily, snapping her eyes shut in the process. “Oh, right, the floodlight. I forgot about it. I can’t have you seeing where you are quite yet. Just kidnapper things, you know how it is.” Kintaru begins quietly mumbling to himself, as Alyssa hears him begin pacing back and forth. “Oh! I know!”
After a couple seconds of rummaging, Kintaru places a pair of his signature sunglasses on Alyssa’s face, dampening the flood light enough for her to faintly see his silhouette. “There we go, that’s better, right? I always keep an extra pair or two on me. You never know when they’ll come in handy.” Alyssa stares at Kintaru, silently, as he pulls a chair up and places it directly in front of her. “Perfect. Uhh, before I sit down, do you need anything? Glass of water? A snack?”
Kintaru, awkwardly stands in front of Alyssa, clearly awaiting a response, before smacking himself firmly on the head. “Right, right, of course, the gag. Lemme get that for ya.” Kintaru reaches into his pocket, pulling out a switch blade. He dramatically flicks it in front of her face to absolutely no reaction. “You make this a lot less fun when you’re aware I’m not gonna hurt you. I just want you to know that.” Kintaru easily cuts the gag off of Alyssa’s face, tossing the piece of cloth to the side. The moment he does so however, Alyssa firmly spits in his face.
Kintaru pulls out his pocket square, and uses it to wipe the spit from his face, with a short chuckle. “Alright, yeah, I deserved that one.” He delicately folds the pocket square back up, before placing it back in his chest pocket.
“What the hell do you want Kintaru?” The tone in Alyssa’s voice, stops Kintaru for a moment. Even with the sunglasses obscuring most of her vision, she can see him staring daggers into her. After a few moments of silence, he sits in the chair he set in front of her.
“I simply want you to be aware, Ms. Lucchi, of what exactly is going on around you.” The playful, cheery tone emanating from Kintaru moments earlier has vanishes. Alyssa can almost feel the air around her getting colder.
“Yeah, I get it, D is changing, and I don’t know him like you do, etcetera etcetera”. A boisterous laugh erupts from Kintaru now, as he slaps his knee, and throw his head back.
“Change?! You think I’m trying to change him? No, Alyssa, I’m doing something much worse than changing him. I’m making him give up!” Kintaru can hardly contain the excitement in his voice as he lays out his intentions.
“You? No, I don’t think you’re doing anything. Shane IS changing him. You’ve just latched on in the tail end to try and appear relevant.” The laughing stops abruptly, as Kintaru reels himself in. He leans forward, so that Alyssa can see the scowl on his face, even through the sunglasses. After a few seconds though, he chuckles, and calmly leaned back.
“Tell me something Alyssa. Do you know how this great big feud started?” Alyssa’s rolls her eyes a little before responding.
“Yes, you two go all the way back to Genesis. A company nobody has talked about for over half a deca-” Another chuckle from Kintaru cuts Alyssa off.
“Yes, yes, you’re right. Admittedly, I have a... Difficult time letting go of the past. I believe we both do... But what I’m talking about, is the exact moment we started interacting with each other. The moment where it became clear that there was something there. Something bigger.” The calmness in Kintaru’s voice is a little off putting to Alyssa, as she softly shakes her head.
“You are correct that it took place in Genesis. I had actually been on a bit of a sabbatical, after 4-5 years of solid, weekly service. I had started a bit of a return campaign, dawning an alter Ego named ‘The Nobody’. Wore a full get up, covered head to toe, with a plain white mask.” Alyssa can feel Kintaru watching her reactions to the story. Reading every muscle movement.
“While wrestling as this alter ego of mine, I was pitted against a new up and comer. ‘The Enigma D’. Nobody knew where he came, or what the D stood for. But by god, did we all ask.” Another light chuckle as Kintaru reminisces. “However, when it came time for the match, I refused to go down to the ring. I begged and pleaded to not go down to the ring... D didn’t like that though...” Kintaru leans forward now, seeing Alyssa listening intently to the story, knowing he had her hooked.
“That’s when he snapped. He chased me up the ramp, steel chair in hand, anger at the disrespect burning in his eyes. He caught me in no time at al, and he beat me with the chair. Again, and again, mercilessly wailing on my poor, probe body for not showing him the respect he deserved. A momentary lapse in the calm demeanour he had displayed to the world to this point.” A look of disbelief passes over Alyssa’s face as Kintaru continues the story.
“But do you know the real kicker to this story? After he had calmed down, he removed my now bloody, white mask to reveal... IT WASN’T ME AT ALL! It was some poor bystander, who I had forced into the outfit before the match, that he had mercilessly assaulted! It was at that moment, I knew that we were destined to meet each other. He brought out the best in me, and I brought out the worst in him. Whenever the two of us got into a ring together, it would be the most awe inspiring showing of athleticism, and skill, mixed with the most dirty, and bloody brawling you’ve ever seen! When him and I are in that ring, there is nobody better than us...” Kintaru’s voice trails off as he gets lost in the memory.
“Ok, but what does that have to do with me?” Kintaru snaps back to reality, as if he were lost in a dream for a moment. However, he immediately responds without missing a beat.
“Because that fire is the only thing that keeps me going Alyssa! That hatred! That respect! That undeniable desire to put your entire existence on the line for just 3 seconds of satisfaction. My whole career since Genesis has been chasing that high. That satisfaction. Rob Riot, Shane Mitchell, Frank Samson... I go after these men LOOKING for that fire! That desire to win! But in the end, none of them drive me like your dear fiancée...” Alyssa recoils slightly, as she feels Kintaru staring through her once again.
“But now, we have Shane Mitchell enter the fray. A man, broken by a loss that will never return. He is probably the best wrestler in the world. I don’t think I could ever truly beat him in a one on one match myself. I don’t even think D could... Unless...” Kintaru trails off the thought, leaving it up in the air. He motions to Alyssa, as if she knows the answers.
“Unless D brings out his best...” A single clap rings through the room as Kintaru congratulates Alyssa.
“Yes! Unless the best is brought out of him! But the problem, is that Shane isn’t able to bring the best out of D. Shane can go to war with D, but he will never truly break him, because Shane doesn’t know D. Shane doesn’t know what’s hiding inside of that calm, calculated shell. But he’s trying to find it! He’s trying to abuse MY DARKNESS, thinking he’s getting into D’s head! But he has no idea what he’s letting out into the world Alyssa! HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT WE’RE CAPABLE OF!!!” A confused look shoots onto Alyssa’s face at the last statement.
“We? You’re not in that match. That match has nothing to do with you.” Kintaru responds with an eerie giggling as he suddenly shoots forward, pressing his forehead against Alyssa’s.
“You don’t understand Alyssa. If Shane wants to see that darkness so badly... If he wants to be on the receiving end of what awaits him, when D’s soul turns BLACK... I’ll show it to him. I will reach into that darkness, as only I know how... I will pull out the deepest, and darkest desires resting inside D’s soul, and it will do as it pleases. Shane Mitchell may be the best wrestler in the world... But he will never be better than D... and me.” Kintaru stays still for an uncomfortably long time, before he pulls away. He takes a deep, calming breathe as he straightens his suit.
“However, I realize the repercussions of this action, and as I said, D always brought out the best in me. So before this happens, I needed to let you know what was happening. The next time you see D, you let him know you love him. Let him know how much you care, and say everything you’ve ever wanted to say to him. Because after Pandemonium, he won’t be the same person you fell in love with. You deserve to know that.” With that, Kintaru pulls his sunglasses off of Alyssa’s face, and shuts the flood light off, revealing they were in the dining room of Alyssa and D’s home the while time.
“Wait, you... Didn’t take me anywhere? Why would you tie me up in my own house???” Alyssa looks around and sees the places has been totally torn apart. Broken windows, overturned furniture, broken glass everywhere. Kintaru responds by walking up to Alyssa one last time, bending over to be face to face with her one last time.
“Well obviously, so that he finds you.” One final chuckle escapes from Kintaru, before he forces a kiss on Alyssa, causing her to recoil back and fight against it. “And that’s the last kiss you’ll ever get from the good parts of D. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Say hi to him for me when he gets here!” Kintaru then turns away from Alyssa. Leaving her alone, tied up to a chair in the broken remains of her home.
As she enters the kitchen, she flicks on the lights, illuminating the laminated floors, and immaculately clean counter tops. After setting the plates down, she decides to begin scrubbing the pots and pans that had been soaking in the sink.
