Everything was going according to plan. Even the timing was perfect. RSW had gone from the pomp, circumstance and controversial nature of Saudi Arabia to head back to North America. The additional travel wouldn’t be that bad to start.
He’d flown from the Saudi show to Atlanta to perform for another company and now he’d take a much shorter flight from Atlanta to New York. He hated to admit it, but Vanessa had been right.
She wasn’t managing his career, she was building a brand. He stuck out in crowds because the traditions of Lucha Libre demanded he wear his mask at all times in public. He couldn’t simply throw on some baggy clothes and a hoodie and disappear into a crowd. There would be no days off for Pequeño Dinosaurio.
And since there were no days off, he had started taking additional bookings. There was no substitute for experience. Even his father, in the brief moments they had spoken, approved of this increased schedule. Now was the time to learn and that meant more matches, different opponents, and hopefully people would begin to truly take notice.
Vanessa on the other hand had also amped things up, both RSW and his new employer would be selling plastic replicas of his mask, she was working on shirt designs with both companies respective merchandise departments
As his current flight taxied across the runway, he stretched his legs, straightened his mask and laughed. He felt so odd in first class.
The royal blue plush seats made him feel like a child sat in his papa’s favourite chair. Their travel agent had made a mistake separating him and Vanessa. The upgrade was for the trouble.
Stepping in the air of New York, one thing people never comment on is the smell. New York is a wonderful city, but it’s cramped and dirty. His mind drifted back to Mexico City and he found himself smiling as he collected his carry on.
The sun was setting, a cool breeze took the aroma of civilization away from his senses. As he approached the almost entirely glass side of the terminal he stayed focused on Mexico. If he was to be stateside for a while, perhaps he could manage a visit between New York, Atlanta and Chicago?
Yes, that was exactly what he needed! Before Anarchy 52, he’d go home.
Enter the airport proper, JFK was intimidating upon your first visit. He remembered it well, he was 7 years old and clasped onto his mother’s hand so tightly he had cut his hand upon her engagement ring. It was an American tour for Tiranosaurio and his first taste of traveling outside his home country. It was the moment he decided he would follow in his father’s footsteps.
The swarms of people crept throughout the massive terminal like schools of fish. People barely looked up from their phones and those who did often wore headphones. Globally available technology and social media had unconnected the world, yet disconnected it’s citizens.
Vanessa Martinez: Excellent, I see him now. We’re in New York, then Atlanta and Chicago are next. I have to go…
Ending the call and pocketing the device, she was different. Clad in a pink baby doll t-shirt and quite possibly the tightest faded Levi’s he’d ever seen. She immediately had him off balance.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: Vanessa? I hope I wasn’t interrupting. I wasn’t even sure it was you, sorry you had to come back to get me.
Vanessa Martinez: Interrupting? Of course not, just getting set up for the next towns, those masks don’t move themselves. Speaking of which, I didn’t want to do this here, but your first royalty cheque came in from RSW.
Handing him an envelope as they awaited he luggage, she saw him peak before folding it in half and jamming it into his pocket.
Vanessa Martinez: I know it’s not much, but it’s the first one and now with two companies behind you, things are only going to get bigger, and better.
Sure it was only a couple hundred dollars, but it marked a first for him. He had earned money without getting beaten up for it. And the boost in income would help cover his road expenses, he genuinely wasn’t expecting this so soon.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: No Vanessa, this is great. Thank you. I literally couldn’t do any of this without you.
He was truly humbled, this was truly the first thing he had earned without his father’s influence. He suspected she understood this all too well.
Vanessa Martinez: Would you mind telling my father that?
Pequeño Dinosaurio grabbed his luggage, green leather, it had belonged to his father. Having no wheels, he was forced to carry it everywhere he went like an enormous green albatross.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: So that was who you were on the phone with?
It wasn’t a lie, her father had taken an interest in the suddenly successful son of his prized client. It just didn’t have anything to do with his in ring career, per se.
Walking through the airport, they switched between English an Spanish as they spoke drawing occasional stares from MAGA domed morons as they walked by.
Vanessa Martinez: I’d rather not talk about it if it’s all the same to you. We need to talk about your opponent. Apathy.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: What? Look I agree that a Luchador has to care in order to be at the top of their game, but i’m barely five matches into my career Vanessa. I hardly think i’m a jaded veteran yet.
Sometimes he showed his youth in his innocence, she honestly hoped he would he able to hang upon that more than anything else. She’d watched agents like her father and worse chew up luchadors who’d gotten a little hot and then spit them out when things got even the slightest bit difficult.
Vanessa Martinez: Not apathy. Apathy. You know, one half of the RSW World Tagteam Champions? Her and her husband just won them at Anarchy 50.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: Wait a second, her? Did you say her?
Vanessa Martinez: Yeah, her. Is that a problem?
Her eyebrows seemed to dance above her eyes as she waited for a response.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: No, it’s not a problem. I just, I wasn’t raised to strike a woman is all. I’m a tecnico, I just was expecting to fight a man. I don’t know if I can hit a woman.
Laughing, Vanessa stopped walking.
Vanessa Martinez: Wait? You’re serious? Look I good you before, you’re no good to either of us if you get hurt. If you don’t put this woman down, let me put it this way; she will definitely hit you.
From his limited time in RSW all he had were old stories and Anarchy 50 to base his opinion upon.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: She wrestles a brawling, hardcore and high flying style right?
Vanessa Martinez: That’s her. Look, I hate going back to this well but you could stand to get away from the larger wrestlers for a while. She’s basically your size and you definitely have physical advantages she simply can’t compensate for.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: Like?
Vanessa Martinez: You’re younger, faster, stronger. Most importantly you’ve taken way less damage. Apathy has made a career out of being tougher than most men and has the scars to prove it, but that’s the thing. Taking more damage never leads to being able to take more damage. The human body can only take so much, and we haven’t even begun to mention she’s had children.
Laughing, he hadn’t expected such a detailed answer. To hear Vanessa list off things like having children as a detriment was almost surreal. She had more of the ruthless businessman mentality of her father than she realized.
Continuing through the terminal, arriving early had afforded her time to have their rental car and hotel accommodations all taken care of before he had arrived.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: So, if she’s a tag-team champion, why isn’t she in a tag-team match?
Raising her hand, she hits the remote for a red Ford Escape and the lights flash.
Vanessa Martinez: I’m pretty sure there aren’t many teams at the moment.
Throwing his bags into the back, he was sure he’d live to regret this but he couldn’t help himself.
Pequeño Dinosaurio: What if we change that?
She smiled, what if indeed. If they could find him a suitable partner, they could get in a few matches in RSW and, with some luck, maybe even get into the Network Tagteam Championship picture.
Vanessa Martinez: Like find you a partner? I like the idea, plenty of rookies sharpen their skills in a team first! I mean, it’ll stop you from taking so much damage and with you taking more bookings that can only be a good thing. I’ll start shopping around.
Climbing in, she was behind the wheel before he could protest. It seemed Apathy would not be the only thing he would fight in The Big Apple. He would also fight chivalry.
Sitting down, he looked to her as she turned the key. He had no idea what the future would hold, but he had to admit that with Vanessa at the wheel, it would be an interesting ride. Perhaps they could find one more complimentary passenger?
