We catch up with Mike Lio a few days after winning the Shooting Star championship from Marshall Richards the 3rd. He's in what appears to be a run-down gym, somewhere. Could be anywhere honestly. The travel schedule of Destiny wrestling is like that. They'll take any venue they can get. Lio is seen going through the paces of running a speedbag, his fists almost a blur as they keep the bag in motion. With one final swing, putting some extra oomph into it, the bag almost looks like it wants to fly off its mount, but refrains from doing so. Lio turns to the camera and gives it his usual cocky grin.
Ah, sorry. I Was in the middle of training for my upcoming fight. So. Death trap. Yeah, I'd heard what you said. Talking about leaving leagacies and all that. Claiming that all I have are my fists, and that they wont amount to much. Now look. Just because I dont come into the match with a gameplan, doesnt mean I go in unprepared. I prefer to do things on the fly, because it gives me an air of unpredictiblity. Makes it harder for an opponent to read me if you get my Drift. But you... you seemed to lay all your cards on the table. You told me exactly the kind of man you are, and what you can do. And it got me to thinking. You see, you and I? We're actually alot more alike then you realize. Just because I don't have much history in the XHF, doesn't mean I dont have any history. Hell, I'm 33. Six years younger than you. I've been in this business on the shy end of 13 years, since 2007. Like yourself, I've won many titles, and lost them just as much. My reigns have been plentiful, not long.
And as far as wrestling ability goes, while I may not have your martial arts expertise, I stll know something of it. I know how to hurt people. And hell, I also am something of a submissions guy. I've got the King crab hold in my arsenal, as well as the figure four leg lock. Hell, I won this title on sunday making my opponent pass out to a guillotine choke. So yeah. Since you laid your cards out on the table, and so that you know exactly what *you* are dealing with, allow me to tell you about *my* legacy.
Mike lio has by this point, left the main area, to go into the locker room. Finding familiartiy and comfort in it, he takes a seat on a bench and, staring straight into the camera with a look of total seriousness on his face, begins his tale.
So. I started out back in 2007, at the tender age of 21. Wrestled for a company who's name I forget off the top of my head. But back then i wasn't really in it for titles, I was more in it for the sheer thrill and fun of the sport, and to entertain the fans. Over the course of i'd say a year or two, I wound up in some pretty brutal matches, making a name for myself against what the company had to offer. Specifically I'd learned how to use improvised weapons; in particular a barbed wire wrapped steel chair with cinderblocks attached to it. Aside from that, I used other usual weapons to be found in such environments; lighttubes, ladders, tables etc. As far as championships go, I only won one; the secondary title the company had to offer. I won said title, by slamming my opponent off the top of a hell in a cell-like structure, winning the match due to TKO/forfeit.
After that, I was in the odd promotion for the next year or so, never really staying very long, until around 2010 or so when I joined a promotion by the name of Next Generation Wrestling, or NGW. While i wasnt there for very long either, really only about a year or so, I did manage to win the promotions secondary title, even *IF* said title was derisvely referred to as a "pup cup". I won this title in a gauntlet match. You know how the EOD tourney works? Yeah imagine that, all in a single match, over the course of like, an hour. That's the match I won. And not only that, but I came in about 3rd of seven people total. And the last man to enter? He was a returing legend, not unlike yourself. A man *EVERYONE* had pegged to win. A man who even beat me the previous week before the match. But I wound up on top. Soon after I won the title though, the promotion closed down.
So, then in 2011 I took a sabbatical from wrestling for about a year. Took the time off to reflect on what i'd done so far, to kind of bulk myself up a little bit. Trained. Then, in 2012 I learned about a new promotion that was coming back. Being "resurrected" as it were. By the name of GWA. This promotion, much like XHF, had a rich history in its own right. So i figured, hey this is a good way to come back. Make a new name for myself. When I first arrived, I ended up adopting something of a hybrid japanese strong style/lucha gimmick under the name of Crimson Dragon.
I soon found myself making headway, winning multiple titles, including the tag titles. I, alongside my partner, were one of the first and only teams to "dethrone the champs" as it were. A tag team who had been dominate with the titles since the promotion got started again. A team, both of whom I injured leading up to the match. A team....who compartively speaking, were like how Venom and Muller, the GUNS were for XHF. Honestly, the tag titles were what I was best known for in this promotion, winning them an impressive 12 times. Like i said, my reigns were plentiful, not long.
A year or two later, I had held every title there was to hold in the promotion, at some points holding multiple titles at once. But I still hadn't achieved greatness. I hadn't achieved the world title yet. So what I do is turn on my partner, and unmask myself. I start wrestling under my real name Mike Lio. And I start kicking ass. I end up winning the world title. Held it for a few months, before finally losing it to the one man who I never could seem to get the best of. Guy by the name of Michael Brewer. Again, not unlike you DT. by this point it was 2015 i think. Couple of the titles I won got retired, making me the *ONLY* man in the history of GWA to hold *EVERY* title the promotion had to offer. I ended up forming a new tag team with one Johnny Bulldog, as "the dangerous brothers". We were good, the two of us. One of the best tag teams to be seen in gwa. Also ended up beating one of the most famous members of GWA in a brutal Tire Iron man match. But by this point, I was getting tired. The best guys we had either quit, or retired. Our promotion wasnt very big, and I ended up having lots of embarassing losses. Losing to the new up and comers, guys like Hunter Storms and Dylan Black. Anthony Caffrey. Brewer of course as well. Eventually I split with Bulldog, over a difference of opinion, as to who the better man was. I took a sabbatical from the promotion for the better part of a year. In my absence I watched guys come and go. Watched Brewer and Hunter form a tag team that I gotta admit, were better than we were, and once i still wish I could have had the chance to compete against. When I came back, I wound up refreshed and kicked more ass. Thats what I do, ask anyone. I also briefly experimented with my sexuality, adopting the persona of a gay supermodel by the name of "Lio" which I pronounced as "lay-oh" because I thought that sounded cool. Eventually, by the end of 2017 the comapny closed up shop.
So for awhile, I did what I usually do when I'm not competeting. I train. Work out. Take the odd match here and there. So one day, I get a call from Johnny. Guy tells me he's become part of this new fed Destiny Wrestling. Thinks I should check it out, since it's like how GWA used to be, only better. I figure, what the hell I didnt have anything to lose. And apparently some of the guys from GWA were part of it anyway, aside from bulldog.
So upon joining the first thing I do is kick all sorts of ass, as is the norm for me, culminating in my winning the Destiny world title. From Johnny bulldog himself no less, and a man who calls himself "the king of blood" Thomas Galloway. Lost it not long after to Bulldog himself, from whom I won it back in short order. Then what happens? Subject 42 happened. A man whos number I had in the past, but whom was bigger and stronger than I remembered. He kicked my ass and won the title. A title I have yet to reclaim.
So that's it. Thats *my* legacy. You claim to want to win this match to cement your own legacy DT. I plan on being the man who will make it crumble. You claim only one man has been able to make you tap out? I'll become the second man to do this. I'm no stranger to odds. No stranger to being the underdog in a match. But as they say, it aint the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. And you know what else? I got the heart of a lion beating in this chest. After it's all said and done, I'll be the one with the glory. This lion still can roar. You would do well to understand that Death trap. Oh, and one more thing. You wanna know how I know i'll come out on top, and prove all the naysayers and pundits wrong?
*he motions for the camera to zoom in on his face, and flashes a toothy grin for the audience*
It's destiny.
END FEED.
