MAY 1988: AMERICAN WRESTLING ASSOCIATION
Another challenge for me as a booker has come. This time I took control of AWA as Verne Gagne himself. Is up to me to book SuperClash III. Which in turn might be the company last SuperClash due to their financial problems more on that as we go. I like AWA and they currently have a solid roster to work with, probably not the best alignments but hopefully I can do something out of it.
COMPANY GENERAL INFO
Financially speaking the Cult-level company has been losing money every month now, with the economical industry going down in the USA and currently in a precarious state this might not change. And I won't be doing any firings here at least for now and is up to Gagne to solve that, which I think he won't. In terms of Production Values I think they've been lowered already as AWA is losing to JCP which is to be expected since they have more wealth, what worries be is that the production values don't meet the broadcaster requirements which in turn might end their deals soon. It was an option for me to lower them even further and do a good month to save company finances but I won't.
SCHEDULE
B-SHOW: AWA All-Star Wrestling - Every Friday - 1 hour long
A-SHOW: AWA Championship Wrestling - Every Saturday - 1.5 hour long
BIG EVENT: AWA SuperClash III - Sunday, Week 4, May 1988 - 2 hours long
Another overloaded schedule but I won't drop any deal, in fact I will try to secure a deal to broadcast AWA Superclash or any other Big Events of AWA and the revenue might help them.
This are they current broadcasting deals.
Graveyard slot for All-Star Wrestling and Late Night for Championship Wrestling.
And on breaking news already, I signed them a new deal for events. It is 1 year long contract!
It is a commercial network which means revenue will be generated and can help with the current financial status.
COMPANY POPULARITY
Here I show you the progression of AWA during the last year and we all can see that the progression is huge in the United States. Let's hope they stay afloat.
TITLES
Enough being said about the company status it's time to give a general look to the company roster and titles as per usual within this diary.
Nick Bockwinkel is currently their 6 time World Champion and has the title since the game start. He has 10 defenses already and has been leading the promotion.
Then we have the Pretty Boys, Doug Somers & Buddy Rose as their tag team champions. They defeated the Midnight Rockers, Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty in March 1988 and since then they haven't defended the titles.
The World Womens Championship is currently vacated. Sherri Martel was forced to drop the title in April 88 - last month - due to her maternity leave. Which in turn means the title is up for grabs and might explain why was Susan Starr recently hired by the company.
AWA World Light Heavyweight is a belt that currently doesn't have enough prestige to be considered the second title in the promotion and only wrestlers up to Middleweight size can fight for it which in turn lowers the prestige of it. Mark Young, the son of Chief Jay Strongbow holds it. He is a solid wrestler devveloping his skills and looks like a great lowcarder to have in any company.
Will I create any new title? Probably not. It is already a good number of titles to work with. If I will hold a tournament, that's something that is on my thinking but I may opt out of it.
ROSTER
MAIN-EVENT
Loaded at this time, I would say, too many names I like to see and it's making me think a lot about how I will run things. As you can see, Nick & Zbysko are on written deals which tells a lot about the title history but then we have Sgt. Slaughter as a heel that is on a written deal as well. I would give that written deal to Jerry Lawler instead but ok. I won't do it given the company financial troubles.
UPCARD
Verne Gagne's son making 10,000$ per appearance... Now I understand what's wrong with AWA, Plus he doesn't have any IQ-factor. Decent wrestler, very good with the basics and psychology but not too much else to tell. "Son, I guess it's time we talk business". We also have the Pretty Boys in the upcard which is good. And surely what I like most about this UpCard... LEON WHITE!
MIDCARD
Another loaded part of the roster. Midnight Rockers, Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannety, we all know them. CACTUS JACK! Oh yeah! Col. DeBeers! Zhukov & Ustinov. A lot of action can be seen here. I'm still trying to figure how will I book all this without leaving anyone out of it as some of my favorites are here. More than in WWF when I booked it. I need someone to feud with DeBeers and his racist gimmick. So many ideas.
LOWCARD
Solid I would say. Mostly jobbers in my optics, apart from Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags who can build into something.
OCCASIONAL
Well, Mathematics isn't the strong point of Verne Gagne it seems. We have two faces who are well past their prime but still hold name value. The question is... Why pay them every month? Just pay them when they're booked if your company is financially struggling. And I can't change this deals who still have 1 year left of contract. WIll I use them? Probably during the TV-Shows, since they're earning some money, might even include them in some storylines.
WOMENS DIVISION
Is Verne Gagne in love with Dump Matsumoto?! I mean. She is probably one of the best if not the best female worker in the world at this time. But 10,000$!?! That's too much! Apart from that the womens division looks solid, with Madusa, Vicki Williams & Candy Devine being worth of mentioning.
OTHER TALENT
Well some questions rise. Do we need to pay Larry Hennig 10,500$ per month when we are Verne Gagne? He deserves the money since he is does all the job behind the scens and there's no denial to his wrestling knowledge. But we have Paul E. Dangerously on Colour Commentary aka PAUL HEYMAN! We also have ERIC BISCHOFF! As an authority figure... Do we need that? Yeah. But why not have him on commentary as well?! I will change that. Then we pay Lee Marshall 6.200$ to be Lee Marshall and appear here and there...
OUT-OF-ACTION
Well there's no denial to Sherri Martel talent. But she is out for the next 8 months on maternity leave... And we are paying her 10.400$ per month to stay home.
Oh boy... This company has so much talent but Gagne is screwing himself financially and there's nothing I can do about it. He thinks with his heart and not with his wallet which is why AWA might close in the brief future.
