The phone rings in an empty room. In the next room over a group of distinguished ladies sitting 6 feet apart from each other in a sitting room turn towards it. Their room is filled with a soft feeling of impending dread. One of them slowly rises and walks toward the ringing phone. She pulls in a deep breath at the doorway before forcing herself to enter the room. Her hand shakes as it lowers to the ringing phone. She presses a button on the receiver and pulls it to her ear. She lets out the breath before answering.
“Headquarters for The Daughters. This is Her Regency speaking.” Her voice is neither high or low pitched and seems refined and unhurried.
A voice in a similar timber answers in a mix between upper crust British and southern American accent answers back, “Maragret? It’s Mary!” It is less refined but still unhurried.
Maragret turns towards the other room “It’s Mary!” The other ladies let out a collective breath and the room’s mood lifts. She turns back to the phone base. “Mary, I hate to rush you but we are expecting a phone call.”
The sound of a small cannon comes across the phone line before Mary continues, “Oh! No problem. I’ll be quick. I need another car in my obstacle course race and I’m hoping y’all are able to field a team.”
“A race car team? Us? Weren’t you working on one yourself?” Maragret begins to head towards the other room with the phone receiver.
“Yea. Two of my grandbabies escaped from the zoo and they’ll be in my tiger beetle but this is our first race and I’ll be busy in the announcers stand. Plus I already know about the surprises.” Mary’s voice drifts away towards the end as a man hollers in pain in the background.
Maragret pulles the phone away from her a little as she enters the other room, “Ladies, Mary wants to know if we can field a race car team for her obstacle course. Do we have any volunteers?”
The woman who appears to be the eldest of the group raises her hand. Maragret looks at her and says “Your licence was taken away less than a year ago, you ain’t driving. But you can help me cheer on the driver, Beatrice.”
Beatrice shakes her head before responding, “No. I mean, yes I’ll cheer but I would like to volunteer my granddaughter. She is technically still a junior member for a few more years but she owns a big old pink thing that should do well.”
Maragret nods before pressing a button to put the call on speaker phone for the group to hear. “Good idea Beatrice! Mary, we’re in. Beatrice’s granddaughter Mackenzie will drive for us. She will be a junior member for almost another full decade; she just turned 26 last month. She lowers the average age of the group to a young 65.”
Mary gives a hearty laugh. “Great! I’m happy to help modify her car. It will need some type of weapon.” She pauses as another loud boom comes across the line and the man yells softer, as though further away.
“Oh!” Beatrice exclaims. “My old AR-15! My son bought it for me when the shotgun’s kick became too much for these old bones. He has since given me another gun that I like to plant flowers with better but my sweet little girl knows how to use the AR-15 from when she was younger and I still have some flower seed rounds.”
The background noise lessens as Mary must be entering a building. “Simply splendid. Have her bring the car ‘round later and I’ll set it up. I’m assuming all y'all will be in your fine clothes?”
Maragret’s response is fast. “Of course! We can wave the national flag or ring the bells of freedom without dressing the part! See you later dear!”
