[We open in a wrestling gym]
[Henri Bryndisarson is wearing a pair of black thigh-length wrestling shorts, and a sleeveless black t-shirt emblazoned with “Minnesota Style” in large white letters on it. Completing the look is a pair of black wrestling boots, completing a round of burpees, sweat running down his forehead, he is handed a towel by what would generally function as a dojo student.]
[Henri wiped the sweat away, perusing the gym with a watchful eye, we see it slowly come alive, as younger wrestlers are working out on various machines, working out in the ring.]
HB: This is a lesson.
[ The other young man nods, taking the towel back. Addressing the young man, Henri stretches out his shoulders]
HB: When I came into the business in the early 2000s.It wasn’t like today, you understand? I worked my way up from minuscule and cruddy places in Texas, the territories in the Southeast. A lot of really smart guys had a lot of ideas because of my looks, they wanted me to wear a mask. They wanted me to dress like a mad-max extra.
[ He finishes this sentence with a gesticulation of pointer finger flourish.]
HB: It took a lot of time before anyone would trust me to let the name on my check by my name on the poster. I was told that my last name isn’t easily pronounceable. I didn’t have the look, I didn’t have “it”. I want you to take this lesson to heart. If you put the boots on every day. if you train every day. if you keep yourself in shape every day. You will get yourself the shot you want.
Wrestling has changed a lot in the last twenty years. It used to be you had to do the rounds in the territories, and eventually, your name, given to you or otherwise, would be on the top of the poster. But the territories are gone, I got to see the end of the gilded age of wrestling. You might think, that with the rise of so many independent promoters that we should be in a better age of wrestling than those hallowed days.
I’d say, that guys who come in now, don’t have that same support system that I did. I may have disagreed with the WWA, NWC, or NWA and how they wanted me to dress, but you knew that you had a job. You didn’t have to come in, swinging your biggest bat, every match wasn’t the potential last match you were gonna have.
[ A couple more students have begun to gather around.]
HB: I get to stay closer to home when I lace up the boots. I got my school, and you guys all got a shot at a future where you’re gonna have a chance to be in front of bigger audiences, but you’re also gonna have a smaller spot to aim for.
I’m gonna be in a battle royal in the coming days for NPW. I want all of you to pay attention to the match. I want you to see how hard this match is gonna be. The winner is gonna get a shot at the title of his choosing.
[ A low murmur of positive comments, Henri waves it off.]
HB: Don’t go into this type of match thinking about what title you’re gonna challenge for...
[ A joke about Henri’s thin title resume leads to some chuckles and a smile and nod from Henri himself.]
HB: Don’t get caught peeking ahead. The thing about being in a new territory, is you want to start building these new big ideas. You want to be like Gabriel Blight, and you want to make every match the ultimate match. I want you young guys to pay attention, I want you guys to watch what happens when a young man thinks he is a slave to the grind because he doesn’t a foundation built underneath of him.
The proper way to go into this type of match is the understanding that most of what happens is going to be out of your control. You have to be able to accept the idea that chaos reigns. You often hear people like Taborda looking past the chaos to something to grasp to. He sets his sights well above the NPW Territory, looking at the x-crown.
[ Henri, looking around his current class of students, sees the hunger in their eyes.]
HB: I want you all to watch the NPW rumble, I want all of you to take this opportunity to learn something new about wrestling. I want you to see that a rumble can not be controlled.
But!
[ A single pointer finger in the air.]
HB: The chaos can be managed. If you win, you did the best to manage the particulars of the rumble around you. If you don’t win, this is not a cause for as Gabriel Blight wants it stated, to become a slave to fear. You can not hang your entire career on what you can’t control.
You train, you lace up the boots, and you roll the dice in a rumble.
Alright, guys, I want to hear that you trained hard while I was away, and we will discuss what you learned.
God luck and Good Speed.
