A small Motor Row District warehouse in South Chicago is home to the private wrestling gym that Jay Stevens and his team call home. The ring takes up most of the floor with a modest free weights setup filling the rest. The ceilings are low and the room is cramped overall but comfort isn’t the goal here, it’s all business.
Jay sits on the edge of the ring with his laptop preparing for a remote interview. The signature Skype ringtone chirps through and the call begins with Justin Spencer.
Justin Spencer: Hello everyone, this is Justin Spencer with Jay Stevens for “Quick Hits” on NPW.com. Jay, thank you for sitting down with me today.
Jay Stevens: No, thank you.
Spencer: It’s been nearly a week since your match at End of Days with Manuel Mayorga, where is your head at now that you’ve had time to reflect?
Stevens: I’m in the exact same place that I was when we talked last, I want their blood. I tried to keep to the high road in my short time in Northern Pro and Mayorga and Bloodline have, for whatever reason, targeted me and tried to drag me down to the gutters they call home.
Spencer: You seem focused on getting revenge on Bloodline but in the week since End of Days and because of what transpired there, Blake Samuels has announced the Lethal Lottery to crown the new North American Double Crown Champion, of which you are a participant.
Jay smiles and nods.
Stevens: I am focused on Bloodline but it’s not consuming me. It's honestly not about revenge, it's about right and wrong and fighting for that ideal. In a bit of poetic justice, I’m in the Lethal Lottery draw because of my win at End of Days. Obviously a win by disqualification isn’t the way I want to advance but it sure feels good that Ortega, Fuentes and Mayorga cheated their way out of the opportunity to become the grand champion.
Spencer: You’ve been paired in the first round with the reigning North American Cruiserweight Champion, the “Real” Lord Dominicus. You’ve made no secret since you came to NPW for the Cruiserweight Cup that you have your eyes set on that championship. How do you plan to approach teaming with the man who is your target and potential rival?
Stevens: I look forward to it, actually. I get to be right up close and see what’s he about, do some scouting for when we eventually meet in the ring. But from what I know and despite appearances, Lord Dominicus is a professional and I’m confident we’ll be able to set aside the Cruiserweight Championship and fight for the same goal of becoming the Double Crown Champion. We only need to be on the same page long enough to beat PRIMAL and Solomon Graham.
Spencer: That actually brings me to my next question. The field for the NPW Double Crown Championship was opened to the entire XHF Network and many of the participants have interpersonal history but are seemingly overlooking you as a challenge. What is your response to this?
Stevens: There is a lot of history with the XHF Network and their focus on one another will allow me to stay under the radar until I’m raising the championship over my head in victory. This is a great opportunity for me to show NPW, the XHF, the entire world that I am the real deal and I am here to stay.
So it’s no matter if it’s Lord Dominicus, Solomon Graham, Bryan Chase, Alex Turner or even Eric Dane standing across from me, I’m going to fight and I’m going to win because this is everything I’ve lived my entire life for.
Spencer: Thank you for joining me today for “Quick Hits,” I’d like to have you back in the future and we can dive into your already storied history and get a look inside your philosophical approach to professional wrestling.
Stevens: Thanks for having me.
End call.
