Monday, November 30
The shot opens on Cassie Hunter, sitting on her bed in loose gym shorts and a hoodie, a big cast on her left foot and lower leg. The video quality makes it pretty clear she’s addressing the webcam of her laptop. Her eyes are a little red and while she’s trying to project a calm, strong demeanour it’s clear she’s a bit distraught.
“Hey everyone. So, been an eventful past few days. As you guys can probably see, not the best week of my life.”
She gestures down at her cast before continuing.
“I had surgery yesterday afternoon, they had to put some pins in, doctors are telling me it’s gonna be a while before it heals enough to get the cast off, then they’ll still have to check how everything has healed, then physio and…”
She trails off, wiping a tear from her eye with her thumb before letting out a rueful little laugh.
“So yeah, this really sucks and I’m going to be on the shelf for a while. Unfortunately this means I’ve had to vacate the CWO Women’s championship and I’m not sure when I’ll be back in NPW or to wrestling just in general. Ah, I’d like to thank everyone who’s reached out to me in the last week. Gus Arnold for making sure I have everything I need. Maverick, thanks for helping me feel a little better…”
Flashback, Wednesday November 25
Cassie is helped out of the back of a taxi by the driver before grabbing her crutches and hobbling onto the sidewalk before making her way into the lobby of the hotel the cab had stopped in front of, sitting down in a chair. She’s still got the bracelet from the hospital on her wrist, wearing her coat and borrowed gym shorts, loose in the legs so that she’d be able to take them off over the walking boot on her left foot and lower leg at the moment. She leans her crutches against the side of the chair, then digs her phone out of her coat pocket.
“Hey Becky. Yeah, no, I left the hospital. Just couldn’t bear to hang out there any longer. I’m at a hotel nearby, I’ll text you the address. No, don’t rush, a few hours is fine. Thanks again for coming to get me. See you soon.”
She ends the call, starting to scroll through before blinking in surprise when she spots someone.
“Maverick? What’re you doing here?”
The camera pans over by the complimentary breakfast spread, spotting Maverick pouring himself a cup of coffee. He looks equally surprised to see Cassie, making his way over.
Maverick: “Hey, how bad is it?”
Cassie sighs and shrugs.
“Dunno yet, they have to wait til the swelling goes down some before they can see if I need surgery. You usually stick around after a show like this?”
Maverick offers a sympathetic wince before shaking his head.
Maverick: “Flight doesn’t leave til the afternoon, just killing time until then. What about you?”
“Couldn’t handle the hospital anymore, just killing time til my friend can come pick me up.”
Maverick: “Yeah, I get it. Well, anything I can do? I’ve still got the room til 11am. Free coffee til then, you want something?”
Cassie pauses a moment, glancing at the elevator before extending a hand to him.
“Help me up?”
The shot cuts ahead to the interior of a hotel room, focused on the foot of the bed which is shaking violently and rhythmically, the pace picking up until it stops, the camera panning up to Cassie Hunter laying on her stomach, hair thoroughly disheveled, her lower leg and foot, still in the walking boot, carefully propped up with pillows, looking completely worn out but smiling widely. Maverick is draped half over her with a smirk on his face, a bed sheet covering most of their bodies as Cassie shakily raises her hand for a thumbs up.
Back to Monday
Cassie shakes her head, smiling a little.
“Anyway, to Isabel Rios… you did what you could. Thank you. We don’t know each other very well but I owe you one. And to the Dark Novas, just… fuck you. What goes around comes around, and you decided to start with someone bigger and stronger than you and a hell of a lot meaner than you suspect. Watch your backs, trust me.”
Cassie sighs once more.
“Alright NPW fans, not sure when I’ll see you again but, well… I’ll see you around.”
Cassie leans forward and closes the laptop, cutting the shot to black.
