Renaissance New Orleans Arts Warehouse District Hotel
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
The scene opens on Dylan Black, in his Louisiana hotel. He's spent a few extra days here, trying to get a hold of Lexi. He punches some numbers and holds his phone to his ear.
Lexi: "Hello, you've reached Lexi... well if you have my number you know my full name. I'm not available to speak with right now, so please leave a message and I'll call you back as soon as I can. Cheers!"
BEEP!
A pause. Dylan takes a deep breath.
Dylan: Hey, Lex. It's Dylan again. I know you're not adamant on speaking with me right now, but I really feel like we should clear the air soon, before I head out to Ontario. Please call me back.
Another pause, before he hangs up the phone. He sighs, putting his phone on the table by his bed. Sitting in silence before there's a knock at the door. He jumps up, and practically leaps to the door. He pulls it open, and there's a small box on the ground below him. No one in sight. He picks up the box and it shakes! He drops it, and it opens up! Out tumbles a small corgi puppy!
Dylan: Aww!
The corgi has a small note taped to its collar, which reads the following.
Lord Dominicus' Note: "AHA! YOU'VE FALLEN FOR MY NEFARIOUS TRAP AND ARE BEWITCHED BY THIS PUPPY! GOOD LUCK WINNING THE BUBBLE CROWN NOW, PEON!"
Dylan: God dammit, LD.
He picks up the puppy, looking at it as it yips and tries to bite his hands. He laughs.
Dylan: I suppose I'll keep you.
Quick fade out.
We fade back on the same small corgi, yipping and barking, running around a recliner. A bunny slipper-clad foot finds its way to the floor, before another crosses over. The ends of a bathrobe drape down and we pan up, rather quickly, to see Dylan Black! The baby-blue robe covers him but we can see a white shirt under it. A pair of reading glasses sit on his face, and a pipe in his mouth. A comically large book is in his hands. He looks up, noticing the camera and thus the audience, and smiles.
Dylan: Well hello! I didn't realize you had arrived! Welcome, one and all! We're in the home stretch, right before Christmas, when the décor is all set and presents are just beginning to fill underneath the Christmas tree! We're in the final lap of perhaps one of the shittiest years, so now more than ever we need a little bit of that Christmas spirit to get us through these trying times. That's why today I've opted to take time out of my day, dress down, and read us all a story. Ease our minds.
Taps the cover.
Dylan: This one's called "A Very Canadian Christmas." A short one about a young boy named "Cordon Jarlson."
A not-so-subtle jab. He opens the book and thumbs his way to the first page.
Dylan: "Once upon a time, there was a wee lad named Cordon Jarlson. Cordon and his friends all went to the same school, in the same small town of Canadiaville. One day, just at the end of November, the school announced there'd be a talent show right before the Christmas break. Everyone was hustling and bustling, for they all had fun talents! But not poor Jarlson. He was smart, and knew how to play some sports, but he never had a fun talent."
He puts a hand to his mouth, feigning a gasp.
Dylan: Oh no. Poor guy. <ahem> "There were guys like John Valentino, who was a hit with the ladies and great at every sport imaginable. He could sink a basket from anywhere! The school bullies, Derrick Fame and Stout Skeel, were part of the singing club. Everyone had a talent except for Cordon."
He tuts, shaking his head.
Dylan: "One day, a new kid shows up at the school and immediately, no one likes him. Derrick and Stout beat him up one day after school, and Cordon sees this. He has a character building moment, running after and saving him. He learns the new kids name is... Dillon White."
Smirk.
Dylan: "Dillon and Cordon become good friends and hang out at school, and it's at school where Dillon learns about the talent show, and Cordon's lack of a talent. Dillon, not believing this, makes it his mission to help Jarlson find his talent. They try sports, which Cordon is mediocre at. He's a terrible singer and dancer, and he's not great at many other tasks too."
Dylan: "But soon they discover that Cordon has a pretty cool talent of woodworking. And they begin to bond over that, they practice woodworking until Cordon is confident and enters the competition. So the talent show comes, and Cordon woodworks a beautiful, yet Frankenstein's monster-esque statue of the judges and they just absolutely love it! So Cordon wins the talent show, earning the respect of all his classmates. He and Dillon have a cool friendship moment and they go off to enjoy their Christmas break! The end."
He puts the book down, smiling.
Dylan: What a good story. I hope today, we learned lessons about the Christmas spirit, friendship, and accepting who you are. I hope everybody can enjoy a safe holiday season, regardless what you celebrate.
He smiles warmly at the end of the story.
Dylan: The end.
He puts the book face up on the ground and leaves, where we can see the final page actually details Dillon White actually beats up Cordon the night before the event and takes the credit, winning the talent show and a big trophy. Perhaps a symbol of his attempts to win at Crowning of a Champion. We fade to black.
