“Come on, wake up, snap out of it, Adrien…”
Despite Adrien Cochrane staring at the lights above him in the Destiny Zone, he had the self-awareness to tell himself to get back up after being dropkicked by the Immaculate Lio. He can hear Lio taunting him for being the Dropkick King and getting dropkicked so many times in the match. But he had to keep fighting… he had to fight through this…
“Alright… enough…”
He utters the words to himself as he gets up and sees Lio attempting to use the Adrien Cutter for the third time in the match, but after sixteen years in this business, Adrien knew how to counter the move he’s done the whole ride, pushing Lio off before he can get the proper downward momentum. As soon as Lio turned around, Adrien responded with the move that Lio had just used on him.
“DROPKICK, FROM THE KING HIMSELF!”
Lio’s face begins spewing blood from the move, even coloring some of Adrien’s black boots red. Cochrane leans on the ropes a bit as he waits for Lio to get back to his feet. It’s time for this match to end.
“ADRIEN CUTTER!”
Cochrane drills Lio face-first into the mat with his longtime finishing move. He rolls over the bloodied Lio before hooking the leg. He can hear the referee’s hand hit the mat thrice followed by the bell ringing.
“THE WINNER OF THIS MATCH BY PINFALL… ADRIEN COOOOOOOOCHRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNE!!”
The Dropkick King rolls over to the nearest corner to pull himself up as he hears Simple Plan all over the Destiny Zone. It was his first match of the new year and he was able to come out on top. As looks down towards the ramp, where Lio had already rolled out of the ring and started making his way down the ramp, the sight of Lio’s middle finger makes Adrien squint to make sure he saw what he saw.
“Be better than him.”
Cochrane gives a salute in Lio’s direction before exiting the ring on his own. As soon as he hits the curtain, he sees his wife waiting for him with an ice pack already in her hand.
Everalda: “They say imitation is a form of flattery.”
As she hands over the ice pack, she leans in and kisses her husband. Adrien smiles before using his ring boots to position the ice pack onto his left calf, a target early in the match.
Adrien: “He kept using my moves against me. Why does it feel like someone tries this once a year?”
Everalda: “You have quite a few admirers, mein Herz. Some of them are more… expressive than others.”
A soft giggle escapes her parted pink lips. She notices the way he steadies the ice pack and moves in.
Everalda: “Here. I can hold the ice pack in place for you.”
Adrien: “Go ahead. I don’t think he was admiring me based on that finger he showed me on the way out. But hey, the only thing that matters is getting my arm raised. Mission accomplished. Now we gotta see if I can carry this momentum to the Cruiserweight Cup.”
With a sweet smile, the Sunny Supermodel takes the seat next to him and reaches out to keep the ice pack pressed against his calf for him.
Everalda: “I have faith. After all, I always believe in you.”
Adrien: “First things first: Chris Cavanagh, followed by Niko, then Lord Dominicus. Get through those three in my block to get to the finals.”
A thoughtful look comes across Everalda’s face.
Everalda: “Hmmm… well, it appears you have a lot of studying and training to do back home. Shall we be on our way?”
Adrien: “Yeah, let’s get…”
Before he can finish his sentence, he hears MYŌJIN, the XHF Junior Heavyweight Champion, utter his name in the ring.
MYŌJIN: “Cochrane, Adrien Cochrane. You can hear me backstage, right? I know I shouldn't be getting ahead of myself, given I have to tap out some loser from WWX at Supremacy probably- but you have caught my eye. You see, in order for this title to be the best there is. I need to face the best in this division. You're in that Cruiserweight Cup, right?”
Listening to this, Mrs. Cochrane looks to her beloved husband and offers him a warm smile.
Everalda: “The floor is yours, mein Herz.”
Cochrane shakes his head before walking back through the curtain. He hasn’t even had a chance to sit down after the match with Lio. But even as fatigued as he was, he wasn’t going to let this call out go unanswered. Adrien rolls into the ring and is handed a microphone by the Destiny referee.
Adrien: “Yes, I am competing in the NPW Cruiserweight Cup.”
MYŌJIN: “Good! Now, win it. If I'm going to be the greatest Junior Heavyweight Champion there is, I'm going to need a good challenger to face. So, do what you have to do. Beat who you have to beat- just don't leave me disappointed. This might not be the last time you see me around, Destiny faithful. Have a good night!”
MYŌJIN stands face-to-face with the Dropkick King for just a moment before giving him a smirk and rolling out the ring. The live microphone catches Adrien speaking to himself as he shakes his head once more.
Adrien: “I gotta get past the rest of that tournament then…”
He heads backstage once more and looks back over at his wife.
Adrien: “One more time, what were you saying about admirers?”
Everalda: “Some of them are more expressive than others. Case in point…”
She gestures in the direction the Champion went. The Dropkick King gives one last glance in the same direction.
Adrien: “Well, if MYŌJIN wants a match, I’m going to have to win the Cruiserweight Cup. The goal is clear. And I can’t let anyone… anyone in Northern Pro Wrestling stop me.”
