*The camera fades in on a promo area as XHF Legend and FWA Trainer, Nelly Angel looks around mischievously and cracks a wide “been a while” smile.*
Nelly: Well hello there! Long time no see! I’m sorry it’s been so long folks; I’ve just been so busy.
*He pauses*
Nelly: -Training students, that is. Yes, busy training students. It’s hard to get out and do these shows when you’re always under a…lot of pressure to make the best and brightest actually shine like they should.
*He thinks for a moment, putting his hand on his chin.*
Nelly: But I suppose that’s what I’m being used for here too, right? I mean let’s be honest for a few moments. When I was working with AWF they’d only really call me when they wanted me to lose to their new Prestige champion because I’ve got some of that legend shine on me. The fact that I didn’t always lose was immaterial to them, people hear Nelly they see a solid hand in the ring who won’t do whatever it takes to win if that means cheating.
*The former three time XHF Junior Heavyweight Champion chuckles.*
Nelly: I’ll tell you though. I’ve been doing my best to keep in shape- and I’ve even been getting a few pretty noticeable wins under my belt…at the training facility of course. The students are getting better under my tutelage- what else do you think I’m talking about? But I’ll tell you, when I came to FWA I expected things to at least be a little different. And…I suppose they are.
*He nods.*
Nelly: Yeah, here they try to set me up to lose to some flavor of the month.
*A shrug follows.*
Nelly: Look, I get it. I’m just some interviewer who got a good head of steam behind him and had some great times….a decade ago. In the Network era people like to line me up in front of a new hot property, put on a great match, and cross their fingers I’ll lose. It’s uh….
*He bites his bottom lip*
Nelly: It’s really….hmmm…
*His arms go akimbo on his sides. Finally he looks at the camera.*
Nelly: It’s really insulting.
*He laughs and shrugs.*
Nelly: I mean- to be essentially lined up as a loser for guys you want to impress? Would you at home want that? I doubt it. But because Nice Guy Nelly doesn’t complain he gets that sort of match. Now if I was an “edgier” sort I might try to suggest that the FWA bigwigs don’t really like me very much- but that’d be wrong. They love me….to lose and go back to training. But I’m not “edgy”
*He’s been doing air quotes, by the way*
Nelly: And instead of seeing this as some sort of insult or suggestion that all I do is make for a good poster and a five-star-out-of-nowhere match- I see this as an opportunity. I see this as a teachable moment. I am after all, FWA’s trainer, am I not? Because what I intend to do on March 31st is to go out and give it all I can. Not because I want to put on the best match I can- that’s a basic thing. Obviously I want to show my best to the FWA trainees so that they have something to emulate. No…
*Coach Angel wags his finger.*
Nelly: No I want to go out there and do my best to tap a submission specialist. Sure, ok, I’ll take a pin- that’s fine. But Johnny Maverick favors his strikes and submissions, a real down-to-mat sort of guy; that means that the high flying antics I made my name in over a decade ago won’t work. That’s fine; I’ve made alterations to my style. That’s one of my best abilities, I’m flexible. I fit into any match- but obviously you all know that. But this time?
*He tongues the side of his cheek and nods to himself.*
Nelly: This time I have something to prove. I’m not done in this business and although everything seems to think I’m one foot into retirement I’m going to prove that such notions are not the case at all. And I’ll do that at Kings of Destiny by playing the spoiler. Even the promotional material is painting me as this underdog against some zany guy from some other company with a million accolades. Ha, with that resume I might as well be facing Eric Dane- only enjoying it because at least New Maverick has fun doing what he does.
*The younger Angel brother’s arms spread wide.*
Nelly: So let the message ring out across the land! At Kings of Destiny you’re not gonna see “Former Legend” Nelly Angel vs “Guy We Want To Impress” Johnny Maverick-
*He shakes his head.*
Nelly: No we’re going to see Nelly Angel, who’s in some of the best shape in his career, do his best to pin or submit Johnny Maverick to make a statement that maybe, just maybe, I’m not done yet. And maybe, just maybe instead of trying to impress outsiders who’ll flavor of the month for a week and then wander off when you stop giving them easy victories- you should look at your own backyard. We’ve got some really good talent here in FWA and as a mother hen of sorts to my flock of students you better believe I’m going to protect their spot.
*Nelly’s flicks his hand a little*
Nelly: So go ahead, bring in some outsider. Give him the main eventer treatment. Wine him, dine him, give him his own private locker room- the whole works. I have seen in up close….from the backstage….in my career…not a specific incident real recently. You give him everything he wants. But I’m gonna do my best to make sure he experiences what real competition is here. THAT’S a test and THAT’S how you find real talent. If he can beat me?
*He shrugs.*
Nelly: Good for him, maybe he’s worthwhile. But if he can’t? See if he’ll sign. Or see instead if he would rather play big fish in a smaller pond. I’m proud of what we’ve done in FWA, and I’m going to show Johnny Maverick how we play here in the great white north.
*The camera pulls in closer to Nelly’s face.*
Nelly: Welcome to the Fullmetal Wrestling Alliance, Johnny. I hope you’re ready for one heck of a battle.
*He winks and the camera fades.*
