I was wondering if there are any songs you listen to that used to have a different meaning when you were younger compared to now.
I'm very slowly going through my CD collection and I hit No Doubt's "The Singles 1992-2003." It's their singles from the years stated, lol. I bought the CD because No Doubt songs are really rocking but as I've re-listened to them after all these years I'm very quickly starting to realize that No Doubt songs are extremely sad. It brings new meaning to their album title, "Tragic Kingdom."
Like "Just a Girl" was a bouncy song that seemed like a middle finger to established gender roles but now...it seems a lot more of a darker commentary on the fact that women still aren't considered equals and are always defined by their relationships with men.
Or Bathwater. When I was in school that song went right over my head. Now when I listen to it; holy crap is that a messed up obsessive song.
Or Simple Life. I didn't really buy into that song when I was younger because I wanted to live this huge life; but now it's sad that the best she can get is singing about a calmed down life
All of this just compounds when you think about the fact that Gwen Stephani was dating one of the members, so all that depressing break-up stuff was actually happening within the band while they were still producing. Man, No Doubt wasn't pop, it was hardcore, lol.
I was wondering if you've experienced any of this while re-listening to old songs.

When George Michael died it reminded me how I loved his single Fast Love. Nowadays I can't really focus on the rad bassline so much because I know it was written by a guy who liked shagging fellas in toilets.

Thanks Ish, now I'll have that image whenever I hear a George Michael song. My wife used to be obsessed with him as a teen and was crushed when he came out, lol

Lupe Fiasco has a song called Mission. Not a radio single, just one of the cuts from an album. It's about fighting different types of cancer and I have always liked the song and the message but after watching my father fight cancer for 6 months before passing away that song now makes me cry every time it comes on on my phone.

I think, like a lot of other people my age, I ended up getting into a lot more rock and that genre when Linkin Park came about around 2000. However it probably took me a year or two more before I heard Disturbed, their albums "Believe" was a game changer. It wasn't much long after New Found Glory and Fall Out Boy hit my ears and I was hooked on pop punk and the like.
That said, I do have a broad range on the iPod now, there's a sneaky little bit of Lady Gaga to go with SOAD and a couple Radio 1 Live Lounges where artists do covers or acoustic versions of their own songs (FYI, The Fray covering Hips Dont Lie by Shakira is nothing short of brilliant and hilarious). The more up to date stuff I have is Paramore, Set It Off and ...actually that's all really.
