NLW Exclusive
Backstage During Ascendancy XV
We see General Manager BB Gunn marching towards his office following his confrontation with Joe Blow. Resident interviewer, Kelly Ross attempts to intercept him.
“Mr Gunn, sir! Please, can I have a word on what just happened?”
Gunn ignores her and tries to step past her but she moves with him, her tone becoming more insistent.
“Sir, I just want to understand why you’ve just made this challenge to Joe Blow, why you would risk your physical health as well as your position within NLW?”
This causes Gunn to stop, he stares at Ross for a moment, before glancing at the camera, and back at Ross once more. His looks wired, barely able to stay still, before he slowly takes a deep breath. Whilst this doesn’t seem to stop him from looking like he was on sort of accelerant, he at least addresses the question.
“Why did I do it, Kelly? I did it because a man can only be pushed so many times before he pushes back. Because for almost nine months I have watched everybody in NLW tiptoe around Joe Blow, his lewd antics, his constant attempts to cause chaos within this arena. Not caring who it may upset or what sort of cost it incurs. Some people found it entertaining, some people have complained, but each time Joe did any of these antics, I’m the one who had to deal with any shitstorm that came from it. I have management to report to, I have shareholders to report to, all whilst I try and deal with the day to day of making sure these shows happen and that the light stays on.”
Gunn points to himself pretty aggressively.
“Me, Kelly. You’ve seen me try and stop him exposing himself on television, you’ve seen me try and stop him from orchestrating an orgy in the audience, you’ve seen me compensate screw members for god knows what stains he’s left on their clothing. You’ve seen all of it, you’ve seen how much stress I’ve been put under, and yet you ask me why I did this?”
He sighs.
“Coming from you as well, Kelly Ross, who just a few weeks ago took some revenge on Jolene after she had been bullying you from the second she arrived with The New South, I don’t get it!”
“In fairness I was tricked into that match, sir.”
“But you got revenge.”
“Sir, is revenge really a good motivator given that Joe Blow, if he wins, takes your job for the foreseeable future? And you would be his assistant, which…given Joe’s ways of life may prove problematic for you.”
“He’s got to beat me first, and believe me Kelly, I’m going to be coming out swinging.”
“...Which I don’t doubt, none of us do, but he is a trained wrestler…or at least I assume he’s had some form of training for you to sign him to a contract.”
“I’ll be honest Kelly, I have no idea if his experience was legitimate, I was told to literally hire anybody to get us started. Seriously, anybody.”
“Uh, sudden self-consciousness aside that you may have set a low bar when you hired me with that alarming admission, the fact remains that he actually has ring experience…you don’t.”
Gunn very abruptly calms down, realisation dawning on him very quickly.
“Yeah…that’s a good point. I…I may not have thought this part entirely through.”
Gunn’s Duracell Bunny demeanour has evaporated and been replaced almost immediately by a man who’s thinking about how he solves a major fuck up.
“So…what are you going to do?”
Gunn doesn’t reply to start with, you can almost hear the cogs in his brain turning. In fact it’s Kelly Ross who comes up with the first idea.
“You could just fire him.”
Gunn’s reply to this is flat.
“I’m not paying him off out of principle! Kelly, don’t worry-“
“With respect, if Joe Blow is in charge, then yes, I’ll worry, as will every single member of the crew in this place, and you know that.”
Gunn’s face drops some more.
“Okay, okay, good point. Look, trust me, I’ll get some training organised, if Al Jabroni can get success in NLW in such a short time then I’m sure I can too!”
Lightbulb moment.
“In fact, maybe Disco Boy could spare me some of his time! Kelly, I’ve got a call to make!”
Before Kelly can ask him anything else, he’s gone, and we cut to black.
