Backstage at the Scotiabank Arena, the set has been erected for “NPW Today”, the media scrum pre-show for NPW.com. The build is different than seen previously at the Powerade Center, resembling less of a sitdown talk show and more of a news broadcast, reminiscent of a long-running nightly CNN show. Justin Spencer sits behind a large desk, the entire wall behind him a video screen.
Justin Spencer: Welcome back everyone, I am joined now by the Number One contender to the North American Cruiserweight Championship and the man who will look to put a dent into the dominant reign of Lord Dominicus. My guest is Jay Stevens.
The camera pans out to show Jay sitting across from Spencer, wearing all red ring gear with gold trim.
Spencer: Jay, thank you for joining me. You have the opportunity to win your first championship in Northern Pro Wrestling when you face Lord Dominicus. This is your first opportunity at gold here that is one-on-one and not in a tournament setting. How does this change your mindset entering this match?
Stevens: One opponent, one gameplan. I can focus my energy entirely on beating Dominicus.
Spencer: Lord Dominicus seems to have gotten under your skin, like he does most of his opponents, what is it about him that bothers you?
Stevens: He’s not “under my skin”, I just have zero respect for who he is and what he represents. Lord Dominicus is focused on one thing and that’s Lord Dominicus. He’s his biggest fan and his only advocate. You don’t hear anyone else singing the praises of Dominicus, and that’s probably because he never shuts the fuck up.
Spencer: My experience with you has been that you prefer to do your talking in the ring, is that difference in your approach what aggravates you?
Stevens: I’m not aggravated, agitated, angry or any other alliterative adjective. I’m just pointing out that my gameplan is violence and his is ad nauseum self-promotion. That is his tactic. He overwhelms opponents with his constant presence on social media and chewing every bit of screen time he can acquire. But while he’s online, I’m in the gym putting in work. When he’s on an airplane taking every single hot dog and a beer payday on every single event that will allow him to do his particular brand of nonsense, I’m in the gym putting in work.
Spencer: Lord Dominicus is very well known for his ability to promote himself. Many would say that is a trait that is admirable.
Stevens: He is very adept at self-promotion. But I’m not trying to be an “influencer” or a reality-TV star. I’m not handing out discount codes on Instagram or doing silly dances on TikTok. He can have all of that and I have no doubt it will make him happy… until people stop watching and click on something else.
Meanwhile, I’ll stake my claim inside the ring as the best professional wrestler in the world and happily return to ignoring the noise coming from the mask.
Spencer: We’ll end with that for the moment. Jay, thank you for joining me and I wish you luck in your match.
Stevens: Thank you. I’ll see you on the other side, but I’ll be the champion.
Stevens shakes Spencer’s hand and the camera pans back to center with Justin behind the desk.
Spencer: When we come back, we’ll be joined via satellite from “his evil lair beneath a volcano but three blocks East of the Starbucks on Velencia Avenue”, the North American Cruiserweight Champion, Lord Dominicus.
The screen fades to the NPW.com logo with a timer at the bottom counting down from five minutes.
