The NPW press set up is more resplendent than normal to reflect the gravitas of Shockwave. A digital backdrop of logos moving diagonally top to bottom of the NPW logo, bottom to top for the network logo, and over it all the Shockwave logo with a digital sheen running across it.
Raised above the assembled wrestling press, is the classic long fight table with a podium at the center, recognizable figures of NPW and The Network sit to either side. Proudly displayed before the podium on red velvet are the XHF Trios Championships.
Standing at the podium is Gus Arnold, proud and erect.
Gus Arnold: I’d like to bring DeAndre “HNDRXX” Simms, currently living in Toronto, Canada, but proudly representing Flatbush, New York!
“Falling Out the Sky” by Armand Hammer plays lightly as HNDRXX walks into the ring, wearing jean shorts, and a “Breaks Special” Hoodie, with an image of the eponymous move illustrated on the back. His hood is up as he approaches the podium. He surveys the assemblage. He nods at a questions asked.
“Yeah, I think a lot of people sleep on Joe Mack. I think a lot of people sleep on Leon Van Zandt. LVZ and Joe Mack are two of the best wrestlers I have ever got to train with in the ring. I got nothin’ but respect.
An’ naw. This team only look like we ain’t knowin’ one another. No disrespect but if you don’t spend time in the gyms, you ain’t gonna have that lightbulb goin’ off to see how it come together.”
He nods eagerly at another question.
“Yeah, my dude Joe Mack is why I came to NPW, Joe Mack gave me that phone call.”
HNDRXX rubs his chin.
“Yeah, LVZ an’ me we kinda use a similar style so I was familiar with him long before we got a chance to shake hands and see what it was all about. It’s not often you got three wrestlers whose styles all work well together. LVZ an’ me we got the Catch Wrestling, and Joe Mack gonna bring that power, but also he got agility. Joe Mack like a jaguar.
Yeah you write that one down word for word my dude.”
Laughter all around, HNDRXX pulls his hood down and runs a hand through his hair as the next question is asked.
“Yeah man. Who ain’t heard of the Revenants? Just because SWAT was a rough ride for me didn’t mean I wasn’t payin’ attention, you know?”
HNDRXX pauses, considering.
“But yeah, It’d be a lie to say that LVZ, Joe Mack and me been teaming anywhere near as long as those dudes. Predates them or us coming to the Network. So yeah, you gotta make sure you bring the a-game. But you gotta do that everytime you rub the boots on the ring apron, feel me? Everyone know individually they all got skills, but the fact is, they a team in a way almost no other team in this tournament is.
But you wanna know what this tournament about, you can’t be asking for no easy matches. Gus Arnold.”
He gestures to Gus who nods.
“He was up front when he set the brackets who we was facing. He ain’t shy about wantin’ to see what the three of us is about. Right out of the gate. I know I can speak for LVZ, an’ Joe Mack when I say we lookin’ forward to the challenge.
All that I said about the Revenant’s stay true. They got more experience as a team, they know each other like brothers. Maybe, they even like one another.”
Scattered laughter as pens continue to scratch on paper.
“But I think you gotta ask, even though they willin’ to do anything to put they names in the win column, do they got that fire? Rob Garcia, NJC, lately it seem like they slippin’. Seem like they hanging around the back tellin’ anyone who gonna listen that even though they taking a couple of losses how it ain’t the fault of them.
You hear a lot of excuses, and you know what? They startin’ to sound exhausted, a little tired. Rob Garcia got that history of sayin’ anything that gonna absolve him of a loss, and now NJC takin’ a loss to a living legend of our sport startin’ to do the same?
Gotta wonder what level they at these days. Maybe they lookin’ down those long resumes of championships and they startin’ to feel secure in what they accomplished already, and Keith Williams keep convincin’ ‘em to put it back up one more time.”
HNDRXX points at another in the assemblage, and looks thoughtful as the person reads a question from a prepared list.
“Well I don’t think even if they startin’ to look like they slippin’ means you can think, oh we gotta focus on Keith Williams. That’s the thing, they ain’t gonna come out and tell Joe Mack, LVZ an’ me, “This is how we gonna do it.”. Keith Williams he’s the brains of the bunch, an’ you gotta be mindful that he ain’t trying to set it up so all the heat on him, and then his boys, including the couple not in this match ain’t gonna come down like some early 2000s knock off an’ sneak another one out.
I think you try an’ count out NJC and Garcia before the bell rings, and Gus Arnold gonna have the lot of us pushin’ brooms and emptyin’ trash cans. So yeah, a couple of losses ain’t enough to make me think they lookin’ for the door yet. I know Joe Mack an’ me, an’ LVZ we coming into this match, expectin’ the Revenants to be the Revenants. Everything that means.
We gonna show ‘em the heater though. It ain’t gonna be about Keith Willliams, NJC, or Rob Garcia runnin’ game on the unsuspectin’. ”
Gus Arnold moved to the podium and shook hands with HNDRXX. And photos were snapped of them before the belts.
