Sat alone somewhere in a locker room, the plain white of the painted brick walls were the only backdrop. Seated in a black folding chair, it’s clear the enigma is getting ready for a fight.
“This little back and forth of ours…let’s call it our ‘fundamental differences in philosophy’. It reminds me of a story.” Cracking his neck from side to side, an audible pop punctuates his sentence.
“It’s said, that long ago a Cherokee elder was teaching his young grandson about life.” ‘D’s’ voice lacks the malice and hatred of his opponent as he continues.. “’A fight is going on inside me,’ he said to the boy. ‘It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.’” His voice staying measured and even toned.
“‘One is evil- he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt and ego.’ The elder said.” Making sure to look down the camera, the steel blue eyes of the enigma are unwavering making sure Donzig understood each trait as though they were his own.
Picking up his tone slightly, ‘D’sounds hopeful, confident. “‘The other…’ he said. ‘…is good- he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’”
Evening his voice once again, he continues speaking to Donzig. “‘This same fight is going on inside you…’ He told the boy. ‘…and inside every other person, too.’ Just as it goes on within you, and I Donzig.”
“‘The boy…” He says, continuing his tale matter of factly. “…he thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, ‘Which wolf will win?’”
A slight smile accompanies the end of the tale as ‘D’ finishes. “The elder simply replied to the boy, ‘The one you feed.’”
Glancing down, he had only a moment to question his own words; joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. Did he truly believe in such things? In an instant his will shot back a resounding yes and he pressed on. “Now, it’s clear you’ve fed your wolf, as I have mine. Now the time for talk is over. Your time to shine is over, talker. Now, it is time for action.”
Shaking his head, the tale had ended but there was much more to say, this Donzig, despite his protests to the contrary, was quite the motor mouth. “Yet, here you come to me again, shouting ‘look at me!’ ‘Look at me!’ like an excited child hollering to their daddy poolside…’did you see?! Did you see me?!’” Pausing, he runs a hand back through his deep red braided mane. “And again, after a loss no less. If your greatest performances are in defeat Donzig, dare I say, your best is yet to come. Honor will not be kind to you.”
Indeed, it seemed Donzig defined himself by the pain he absorbed in defeat, if such was the case, ‘D’ would have no problem indulging Donzig’s self destructive, masochistic tendencies. “See, as I told you before, you’ve misread the situation. I want nothing but the best for you. I saw you as a potential opponent, though you’ve made it apparent that now isn’t our time. You need time, time to develop, time to rid yourself of this incessant need for attention.” Regret and just a hint of disgust taint his words.
“The problem is not that I don’t see you Donzig, I see who and what you are with no issues. The problem is, I see through you. Through the tough guy act and through to the insecurities you so desperately want to hide.” His eyes are locked down the camera again, he knew all too well the pressure one could put on oneself. Donzig wasn’t that much different than he. On the same curve, just opposite ends.
“Did I see Overheated?” ‘D’ allows himself a chuckle. “Dear boy, I was busy winning my match and punching my ticket to Night of Champions and my chance at taking the X Crown back to NPW! That is why I know this nonsense you spout about wins and losses not mattering is just your ego compensating for your losing battles you’re just not quite ready for. You’ll have your time, just not now and certainly not at my expense!” Passion had hold of his soul and that fire was present in every word.
“No. Wins and losses matter, otherwise we put ourselves through all this for nothing. Even if it is only the test of your own skills and your will to succeed. Anything else amounts it all to nothing. Nil. That can’t be the answer…” ‘D’ trails off for a moment, finishing weakly. “…I won’t let that be the answer.” There’s a desperation in the enigma’s voice that hadn’t been present before, what had started as giving someone an opportunity had now become about more, much more.
Donzig represented, to a degree, the opposite of his way of life. Anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt and ego…all the traits of the evil wolf from the story. All traits that had no place in his life any longer.
Honor would test exactly that. His honour, his will…his heart.
