A black background bears the NPW and August on the Atlantic branding in alternating diagonal rows. Blake Samuels is at the ready in grey slacks and a navy NPW embroidered blazer, a warm smile on his face.
“Good evening NPW fans, Blake Samuels here bringing you the biggest scoops in all of Northern Pro Wrestling!” His enthusiasm for his work shines through and Blake is only getting started.
“My guest has asked for this time to address his opponent at August on the Atlantic. Please welcome, the NPW Openweight Champion, ‘D’!”
Entering from camera left, the enigma is ready for battle. The chalk white of his face-paint making the black and red designs pop. His sleeveless ring shirt tracing his skeleton with it’s design following his body note for note only interrupted by the polished gold of the Openweight Championship. Finally, the deep red of the tiny intricate braids that fell about his face framing the whole visage.
Greeting his guest with a friendly nod and a slightly uncomfortable smile, Samuels is the consummate professional.
“‘D’, you asked for this time to talk about August on the Atlantic…tell us what’s on your mind…” Blake was simply doing his job, but if ever a loaded statement had been uttered…
“Steve Awesome and I couldn’t be more different. Steve’s gone out of his way to show you all that. He says I’m not the guy a company wants on their posters, that i’m not the guy a company wants as the face of their brand.” Looking down the camera, his eyes flash.
“He might be right…” The enigma concedes briefly before continuing. “…I’m not a model. I mean I clean up ok from time to time but this wrestler isn’t leaving for Hollywood any time soon.” He says casually with a chuckle. “But that’s ok because this is all I ever wanted to do right here…” The enigma says as he pats the Openweight Championship. “…and this ain’t modelling. You don’t get points here for being pretty Steve. I’m proud to be different than the rest of the herd. I’m proud to stick out. I’m proud to be a black sheep. But most importantly, I’m proud to be the NPW Openweight Champion! I’m a champion people can believe in!”
With determination in his voice and fire in his soul, ‘D’ takes the championship belt from around his waist and hold it up for the world to see. “This Championship is still in it’s infancy, there’s unlimited potential right here in my hands!” Shouldering the title, he isn’t finished. “But in your hands, what does it become? Another bobble as you shout for relevancy to any who will listen? A mirror to preen yourself in? It becomes a joke…No! I won’t allow that to happen! Not on my watch!”
Blake Samuels is little more than a microphone stand as the enigmatic Champion doesn’t need prompting. “Steve Awesome has been running his mouth. Donzig had me beat, I’m with Esmeralda Von Krauss, I’m not a poster Champion, you’re better than me…all lies.” The finality in his voice leaves no room for question as far as ‘D’ is concerned.
“Thanks to Freakke, I don’t get to know the answer to that. I’m not going to lie and say that doesn’t bother me but there will be time to settle that later. As far I’m concerned, all the noise Steve Awesome has been making is, just that, noise. He’s telling himself I’m just some painted up freak, that he’ll make an example of on his way to a glorious reign…wrong. Steve Awesome is over confident and that’s the string I’m going to use to unravel his attempt to take this Openweight Championship away from me. His vanity shall be his downfall.”
If ‘pride cometh before a fall’, Steve’s fall would be of epic proportions. “Like Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection, Steve Awesome so too worships himself. It is time he learn humility. I’m going to humble you Steve Awesome. I’m going to make sure you remember every word, every insult as I beat you around the ring. Then, when it’s over and I’m still the Openweight Champion…” He stops, closing his eyes briefly…he can visualize it thus he could achieve it. “…I’ll shake your hand because that’s what the legacy of the championship will be, respect…tradition, honour. The true things in life worth fighting for. Not the nonsense and dribble you praddle on with. You’re not Awesome Steve, you’re not even any good. You’re Steve Mediocre…and you’re about to be exposed.”
Leaving Blake Samuels alone, the face of the backstage is stunned. This was more emotion than we’d seen from the enigma so far and Steve Awesome had the misfortune of being the sole person to be in his path come August on the Atlantic.
“Well…” Blake says, straightening his tie. “…that was the NPW Openweight Champion ‘D’ and he had plenty to say to his opponent in the main event of night two of this double stacked two night extravaganza! So much action NPW’s illustrious owner Gus Arnold had to make to two nights! You’ll see You’ll see Keith Williams take on Jesse Jamester in a grudge match before Lord Dominicus defends his North American Double Crown Championship! And that’s just night one!” Excitement has hold of Blake as he pitches into the co-main and main events of night two. “Then we’ll see former partners turned bitter rivals Donzig and Freakke square off ahead of the one year anniversary of the Timeless Challenge and finally…’D’ versus Steve Awesome for the Northern Pro Wrestling Openweight Championship! August on the Atlantic, don’t you dare miss it!”
