The scene opens up in darkness.
A lighter is lit and lights a candle, revealing some parts of the place. The man they call Jaguar, around here, is sitting on a comfy chair. He leans back nodding and crossing his arms on his chest.
“I am glad you decided to follow the rules and cut a promotional video so that you could explain your point of view, Adam Tyrell. You could also have decided not to cut one and focus solely on your training. That´s also part of the equation. It would have been strange to talk against the wind, where nobody is hearing, trying to reach my ears.
You will also try to win this match we are talking about, by pining my shoulders on the mat, by making me submit, or by a count-out. It’s in the rules. It would be strange for you to try and win a normal match by busting me open with a chair shot, or by throwing me over the ropes.
What I want to say is that rules are not prohibitive of freedom, totally the opposite. There is a lot of autonomy to be found within the rules. They are there to tell you how far you can go with your liberty and how you can do it.
You want to make me think that I am good because I have chosen not to kill, steal and cheat. I also believe that there is goodness in me because I haven´t killed, broken into someone else’s property, or abused someone sexually.
I have chosen to be good.
I know that to do those things is wrong, but the question is; where did I learn what is wrong and what is right? Didn´t these norms become norms and rules, because I heard them from people I loved, respected, or feared? Before I internalized them and made them my Superego, or better said, my conscience…
Weren’t them values someone else´s rules first?
They were.
Now, I do not think that just because I am following my code of honor- which was my parent’s code of behavior first and my community´s law second- that I am on a leash or in chains. There is freedom in my code, the freedom to choose whether I follow my morals or not. But I already explained that.
The bottom line is this:
There must be codes and there must be laws, for order to exist. If the government doesn’t hold the right to violence, then violence will fall in the hands of the single man, or worse in the hands of the wild crowd, which will do what they think is right, in their lack of calm and tranquility.
You see, Adam, you know many things in theory.
But tell me one thing; have you ever seen blood on the streets?
Ever seen a ten-year-old play with hand-grenades?
…Or a teenager holding an AK47 In his hands, shooting around with it as if it was a toy machine gun?
Well, I have.
And believe me, it is not a great sight to behold. What had happened in these places? The thing that happened was that the government had lost its right to violence and functionality of Institutions. Thus everything turned into Chaos. Everything turned into Anarchy.
Well, Adam Tyrell, I am sure you understand where I am coming from and where I want to go to. Just like I understand where you are coming from and what you want to see as the truth. From what I have seen and heard, you are an intelligent fellow. As far as I am concerned we could go on and on about the subject, for entire days if need be.
But, just as you said, we are “merely” two wrestlers fighting for a win in the squared circle. I say “merely”, because we are human first and wrestlers in Tijuana second. And thus, as humans, we can change the world!!
By starting to change our immediate surroundings at first.
By making people think.
By making the fans follow us not only while we fight against each other, but also by living our life in the correct manner, that´s why I gave this discussion this form. I could have started talking about strategies and setup moves or finishing moves, how fast I am, and how technically gifted. I am sure you would have had something to say in the matter, you are a thinking human being, which can´t be said for every human being out there…
Bottom line?
The upcoming fight will clash not only two gifted fighters but also two thinking individuals. It is a clash of worlds…
…Well, maybe not so much.
You ,too, follow the rules.
You just don´t immediately realize it.
See you in the ring, Tyrell. Until then I will prepare for a furious fight. I hope you do the same.”
Jaguar crosses his arms on his chest and leans back on the chair he is sitting in. The scene fades slowly to black.
The streets were empty. The soft summer night breeze caressed his face. He was standing near the seashore, looking at the dark sea waters. Dark because of the lack of light and dark because of the secrets they hold. How many a man, during human history, decided to embark on a dangerous journey to follow his dreams, to achieve fame, or to earn a fortune by sailing a ship in the dangerous high seas?
Cristopher Columbus made it, he achieved his goal, but for each Columbus who made it, there were hundreds of treasure and dream hunters who met their early end in the high and dark, calm, seas. What is the price a man must pay, to achieve his dreams and his wishes? Is the high price worth the trouble?
Eron Hunter thought so, he was sure of it. He had made so many sacrifices to become the man he was now. People would look at him, shake their heads, and think he was merely a wrestler. But did they understand that that was what this man had wanted all his life? To be a fighter and a wrestler, at least for a portion of his existence?
What is the price for your dreams? And are you ready to pay it to the fullest? Even if it means being alone in this world, for the majority of your days? The world would not have changed and advanced if some people didn´t make sublime sacrifices, in the name of their dreams.
So…
Can we say the same about freedom?
What is the price of freedom? Of the unending wish to spread your wings and fly in the cerulean sky?
Was Adam Tyrell right in his suppositions that a man needs to be free of order and free to live his life as he pleased?
Eron Hunter was a dreamer, he had made many sacrifices to follow his dreams, but there was something he had never done in his existence and that was deliberately destroy someone else´s life, directly, just so that he could achieve his freedom.
The freedom of one ends, where another man´s freedom is violated.
That was a maxima any good soul, full of morals and a code of honor, would follow in this life.
Sure, Eron Hunter and any other human being had hurt others in some way, while choosing one course of action or another. But there was a difference between choosing one thing to do, among various options, and deliberately walking over corpses and carcasses to reach your goals.
The upcoming fight would be one to watch out for. It was not only a fight between two fighters, it was also a fight between two visions of life, although if seen from up close and personal they weren´t so different after all. But such is human truth and life in itself.
Nothing is black or white.
It has a thousand shades of grey in-between.
