We open inside a dingy gym in the heart of Tijuana. A single fan moves slowly above which is is hardly moving the thick Mexican air. The humidity permeates between the four walls of the facility with a thickness that one is almost able to see if they were to look close enough. The side door is open, which has brought a few locals over to check out what is taking place inside.
A small, four sided wresting ring with wires being used as ropes. This is both dangerous, and incredibly vicious on one's body when one collides with them full force. Perhaps its by design, or perhaps this is all that the owner could afford. We watch as a man wearing a full mask is working on his front rolls, kip-ups and his ability to leap beyond the wires that hold the four posts together, while bracing himself to land perfectly on his feet.
The onlookers are in awe, but the man pays them no mind.
We look closer at the man's physique, and while he looks lean and fit - his arms and torso are littered with deep scars.
One can't endure that level of pain without a story. One can't carry on without those scars being a constant reminder of days past. One can't carry on without the will and spirit to do so.
[Cara De Tornillo.]
Our Lucha star hasn't always dawned a mask. Up until recently, 'Screwface' walked freely in his home country and was widely recognized for his dimples and perfect smile. Those days now only seem to echo in the wind, for today we aren't the presence of the man we used to know. Cara De Tornillo was born when a life of pain, agony and torture ruled their ugly heads.
The Legend has grown as time has passed. It's hard to be certain what that truth is, and what has been exaggerated. But one thing is for sure, 'Screwface's' body certainly suggests that even the most gruesome rumours and folklore of his past might inevitably be true.
The life of a man that vacillated between crime, passion, wrestling and success.
If only 'Cara De Tornillo was capable of sharing his story through his own words...
But then, would he actually oblige those who's morbid curiosity had gotten the better of them. The people who would cast him aside once their own impressions of the truth were distinguished so they could continue to act as his superior? His entire community have been watching him with a judgemental eye for the majority of his adult life. So why should he give them the satisfaction.
As soon as you get a little clout, the next man is looking to take everything you have.
The word that has travelled around these parts and what many people within his community believe to be true - is that 'Screwface' has been sworn to secrecy. His success was envied. His ability to choose a desirable woman to be by his side was unmatched. His wrestling career was on the cusp of super stardom and his efforts had allotted him many luxuries in this life.
So why was he here? This low budget, crime ridden area wasn't where he was supposed to be. Is this to motivate and reinvigorate himself? Or was this the only place that would take him in?
His enemies wanted to ensure his demise. They went as far as to pull his tongue out of his mouth and butcher it to ensure his silence and cooperation. How his life managed to walk down that path is up for speculation. The people of Tijuana pride themselves on their ability to keep secrets.
[Alejandro Ruiz.]
A young professional looking twenty something emerges from the shadows. He looks up at 'Screwface' and the two exchange a nod. At first glance, it wouldn't appear these two individuals have any thing in common. Our clean cut narrator looks like he hasn't ever lived a day of violence, and certainly wouldn't be walking around the slums of Tijuana on a day like today.
Unless...
[...]
Unless, he felt completely protected, or had an opportunity for monetary gain.
We watch as Cara De Tornillo's calloused body continues to bump around the ring. Alejandro Ruiz takes out his personal cell phone with 'Screwface' training in the background. He offers a few words.
Ruiz: "Life is art. Our bodies are the canvas, and our experiences reveal themselves over time."
[...]
Ruiz: "Cara De Tornillo's canvas has been put to the test his entire life. He wears his wounds as a badge of honour. His callused body acts like a thick shield to protect what's inside from those who look to harm him. His mask conceals the pain and suffering that he has endured in this life. While everyone is looking to print a story in regards to Cara De Tornillo and his recent signing with Lucha Subterranea Azteca, the only person that is at liberty to give out those kind of details is me."
[Ruiz and Cara De Tornillo exchange a glance.]
Ruiz: "Our plan is to share the truth ... his truth."
[Ruiz points to Cara de Tornillo, who is now totally engaged in the video.]
Ruiz: "To all those who oppose, let me assure you that the authenticity of his words will be of the utmost importance. The trust that exists between the two of us is second to none. So while you've all been salivating to hear from the man himself for your own distorted sense of self enjoyment..."
[His voice trails off.]
Ruiz: "Quite frankly. none of you have earned the privilege. So let the rampant questions continue...Let the entitlement of this community absolve itself of any wrong doing... Let the righteous decision makers and hypocrisy continue to turn the other cheek."
[Ruiz grows more serious.]
Ruiz: "The truth shall set you free."
[Ruiz snarls.]
Ruiz: "Sooner or Later, there will be no denying that Cara De Tornillo will rise above the competition. It shall be written and come to pass."
[...]
Ruiz: "The sports of Lucha Libre is mired by the secrets of those in power attempt to keep. But those who stand defiantly have their own version of events..."
[Ruiz puts his index finger over his mouth.]
Ruiz: "Shhhhhh."
[Calmly.]
Ruiz: "In due time."
[Cara De Tornillo dives from the ring to the floor next to Ruiz and lands on his feet. He takes the phone, and looks directly into the souls of the viewers. His piercing blue eyes are unmistakable. The fangs from his mask look like weapons of war.]
[Black.]
