“I was taught by my mentor that to be a champion is more than just holding a title. It’s more than just a name being on a list. It’s about how you carry yourself.”
Adam Sanders speaks softly as he stands inside the practice ring. His eyes are fixed on the corner of the ring, showing his right profile to the cameras. He exhales before turning back to the camera.
“It’s a state of mind even. You have to be a champion here before you could ever be one here.”
The Awkward One points at his head before gesturing to the ring where he stands.
“It’s about pushing yourself further than you’ve ever pushed yourself. It’s about giving it everything you have, everything you can muster to fight even if there is no more fight left, you find it from somewhere deep inside you to keep going…
“I try to embody that every time I step into a ring. There’s been a lot of obstacles in my career. I was told so many times I wasn’t cut out for this business. I was told that I was boring, I didn’t have what it takes, I didn’t have that it factor to matter. Do you know what I did?
“I did it anyway.
“The words of critics means NOTHING. The words of my opponents mean NOTHING. No one can limit me. No one can tell me what I can or can’t do, what I’m capable of or not… NO ONE!! NOT A DAMN PERSON ON THIS DAMN ROSTER!!”
Adam clenches both fists as he starts to raise his voice before returning to his more calm demeanor.
“But to be a champion, you have to care. You have to care about being the best you can be, the best in the ring in any given match. If you don’t care, what are you doing here? What are you really doing here? If you don’t care about winning matches and winning championships when those opportunities come to you, go. Leave. Get the hell out of this ring, this locker room, and find yourself another goddamn career.
“Graham Baker, do you care? You’re still silent. I’m still waiting for you to say something, ANYTHING, to show me that you care. Do you want to be champion again, Graham? Do you want to win this match? Do you care enough about your career to step back into that spotlight and chase after this belt again? Or are you just going to let your little interrupting skills try to be enough? Are you working to better yourself to win this time or are you just going with the flow? Do you even know I’m in the match?
“Your lack of commitment to even speak… that tells me you don’t care. And if you don’t care, you don’t deserve to be champion again. There’s still hope for you though. You could get that spark again. You could snap right back into it and truly be a fighter once more. But until then… your results will reflect someone just being on autopilot.”
“Conversely…”
The Michigan native closes his eyes for just a moment to gather his thoughts before opening his mouth.
“We have the opposite problem with the champion. He wins this championship and thinks he’s some sort of god. He prances around like he’s the most violent person in the entire Network. A lead pipe? Really? What are we: wrestling or playing Clue? Syringes? You trying to make sure I’m vaccinated for COVID? You need weapons to matter? You need to try to portray yourself as someone who should be deemed a threat? That’s a COWARD’S move. Are you a coward, Lazarus Arjen?
“You talk about how I fit the bill to be punished by someone like you. Lazarus, tell me that again when I lariat your head off your shoulders. Say that again when I drop you on your head six or seven times. SAY THAT AGAIN when I AM the one with my arm raised and I AM the one walking out of that ring as the NLW Southern States Champion.
“You’re not special. You’re a man, just like me. You can be hurt. You can be exhausted. You can be defeated. Lazarus, I hate to break it to you, but you’re not even the best cruiserweight from New Orleans. ‘But I don’t value…’ THAT IS WHY YOU WILL LOSE!! You don’t care about being the best. You don’t care about that title. You just care about trying to be the most violent person around to make up for your lack of skills. Your apathy will get back to you, whether you realize it or not.”
At this point, Adam gives a weak smile. It was like a wave of hope finally hit the Awkward One after nearly yelling at the camera for a few moments.
“Your past banners don’t matter more than what I have already done here. You can’t rely on what you’ve done against people who aren’t here. Your little threats of weapons don’t care me more than having an ACTUAL KNIFE in my torso… TWICE, an ACTUAL SWORD that ACTUALLY KILLED PEOPLE swung at my head, or ACTUALLY BEING ON FIRE. Cave my head in with a blunt object… that’s a damn Tuesday to these people. If you’re going to threaten me, at least try to be better than what I’ve already overcome.
“Otherwise, I will overcome you just like every other obstacle that’s been put in front of me. I’ve gone through TOO MUCH to let this opportunity slip past me. No… I have no choice. I HAVE to win this match. I HAVE to make everything I went through matter and worth all the pain I endured. If you’re just going to add to that, Lazarus, then you will just make the reward that much sweeter to me. After that, you can return to that hell you came from. Defeated and apathetic.”
