Downtown Tijuana.
It's the middle of the afternoon, and the scorching heat is enough to caution those in the vicinity to seek solace in the beaches. But for those who are readying themselves for combat, there is no such luxury. We're back to the dingy gym where was last laid eyes on 'Cara De Tornillo'. Instead of watching their local competitor bounce around the ring, today's vibe is much more somber. The side entrance is roped off, preventing the general public from galavanting as they please, but that doesn't mean there isn't an interest in interacting.
We spot Alejandro Ruiz standing near the entrance and he appears to be holding court with a small scrum of reporters. Our young and ambitious twenty something looks the part of a sport's agent who takes imself quite seriously. His demeanour is confident without coming across as arrogant. His dark dark shades do their job in helping to conceal some of his facial expressions. A fitted white golf shirt and dark blue slacks finish off his ensemble.
As our camera approaches, we see the man now known as Screwface off in the distance. His mask covers his face, but through the eye holes we notice that his eyes are in fact, closed. His palms are up, and he appears to be in a relaxed state. Either way, the action is with Mr. Ruiz, and we're able to catch up with him at the precise time he's starting to divulge more information about his client.
Ruiz: "At this point, I think I should have a strong enough track record where you media types should give me the benefit of the doubt. I have represented athletes in various sports within this community, and that stems from soccer, to professional boxing to professional wrestling."
One of the reporters in the scrum uses this opportunity to chime in.
Reporter: "Tell us more about Cara De Tornillo and why you've decided to represent a relative unknown."
This comment receives a side smile from Alejandro.
Ruiz: "While Cara De Tornillo might be considered an unknown to many of you, I can assure you he isn't someone I found on the street. I'm always willing to venture that the man underneath that mask is someone that the community of Tijuana is very familiar with."
The intrigue Ruiz had hoped for happens in an instant. The reporters begin talking over one and other looking to get a firm answer as to 'Screwface's' identity. Ruiz smiles, before holding up his arm to signal it's his turn to talk.
Ruiz: "Things aren't always as they seem. The man you've come to inquire about is someone that wrestling historians should be very familiar with. In life, sometimes our paths take unique twists and turns that we cannot prepare for. If I were to speak of his past identity, then the tension and suspense would disappear in an instant."
More talking over one and other, hoping to dissuade Ruiz from taking the stance that he's currently taking.
Ruiz: "It's like magic. The secret behind the trick doesn't impress anyone. The evolution of a man's life from being in the public eye to a more sedentary life isn't going to make front page headlines. Want to know what will though?"
The group of reporters wait with baited breath. The suspense is killing them.
Ruiz: "The story behind the evolution and what has come to pass. The headlines will come as Cara De Tornillo impresses the masses inside of the ring."
They're begging for more.
Ruiz: "Layer by layer, the story of 'Screwface' is going to come to light, and I can assure you that there are going to be some very important people in some very important places who aren't going to be happy about it."
[Who won't? Tell us!]
Ruiz: "Now as you all know, Screwface is set to make his debut with L.S.A in one week's time against a very formidable opponent in Issac Jones. The man's resume is that of a top notch striker, who is as tough as they come. It seems as though he's well connected in his homeland and is capable of defending himself from oncoming challengers. So while we respect Isaac and his desire to step into the ring, we would be remiss if we didn't note that he was doing so on our home soil. He would be doing so, in front of our country's rabid fanbase. Bouncing or owning a night club and taking down drunk patrons or having the protection in the streets from local gangs isn't going to help you inside of the squared circle."
The reporters remain silent, completely captivated as Alejandro Ruiz continues to sell the skills of his client.
Ruiz: "Do you think that 'Screwface' is sporting the scars of violence that he is because he was in a tussle in a night club? The man's canvas is forever scarred by the transgressions of others and their innate desire to control someone and use their skills for their own selfish reasons."
Ruiz looks back at Cara De Tornillo, who is still locked in his relaxed state. It's as if he suddenly feels eyes on him, as he breaks his position and his eyes begin to glare forward. His eyes pierce through the thick humid air and lock in with Ruiz. The two share a respectful nod, as Ruiz indicates he's almost finished here and that the two of them can get back to their strategy session.
Ruiz: "We respect our upcoming opponent, and we plan to execute our gameplan with precision. The rebirth of Cara De Tornillo is upon us. Step by step and inch by inch, we plan to become the heart and soul of L.S.A."
At this point, Cara De Tornillo has stood up and walked towards the scrum without getting too close. He surveys the area, and as he does, the reporters take two steps back. They're able to sense the seriousness of his aura. They feel the pain that his body appears to have been through. Yet, they can't force themselves to stop watching his every movement.
Ruiz: "Thank you for your time. Be sure to buy tickets to L.S.A's inaugural event and support to promotion. We will see you on the 29th."
It's here where Alejandro turns his back to the scrum and closes the side door behind him. All that were left with is more questions than answers, and a sweltering hot summer afternoon on the streets of Tijuana.
