Always Playing Chess
When his music played you knew who was coming out onto the stage. Regardless if you love him or hate him you knew you were going to see something special. The look in his eyes was passion, unadulterated passion, it was felt by him, by the fans in attendance, and by those watching at home. He loves this business like no other and standing inside of that ring, between those ropes, he felt at home. It was in the way he looked, in the way he spoke, and in the way he performed. His name is Lochlyn Cade and he does it better than anyone else; August 13th it was Johnny Snipper. August 25th it’ll be the Cruiserweight Champ, Jay Stevens at the Scotiabank Arena.
“The Cruiserweight Champ… Jay Stephens… He’s better than Johnny Sniper, he’s shown more gumption and an innate ability to come out on top in the end…”
The grunt and slamming of his body upon the canvas forces him to grunt and swallow the words he had on h is lips. His eyes bulge out from his head as they seek to escape the force placed upon him. He thought he was going to swallow his tongue as the pressure of the fingers were shoved down his throat. It was a move not synonymous with Lochlyn Cade, he however, had a lesson to squeeze into his students conscious thought.
The words having been first spoke are swallowed by the kid who came to the NecroCore Auditorium hoping to learn the craft. He tried to swallow but his tongue was pressed against the roof of his mouth and he was sucking air. His teacher, The Promethean, shifts his hold upon the students head and he pulls backwards, now both of his hands have fingers forced into the mouth, it was costing the student more than money to learn a valuable lesson.
“Did you see this happening? Did you know I was capable of this kind of pressure with a mere headlock and fingers drove down your gullet?”
The kid, only a few years younger than Lochlyn, gasp for breath as the pressure is released. The man they call Cade stands to his feet and kicks a light tap onto the student’s thigh.
“Suck in the air kid, you’re fine, but I don’t want to hear anything else from you about my opponent and how he always comes out on top in the end.”
He turns back to the other students of the NecroCore Auditorium.
“Let that be an example of what can happen if you for one moment under estimate your opponent.” He looks down at the kid pushing himself to his feet. “Or your teacher.”
Lochlyn points towards a poster on the wall of the Cruiserweight Champion. He always puts up a reminder of his opponents, always forcing himself to think of them, it’s a reminder of the task at hand.
“This business is dictated by the guys who refuse to see just their opponent’s strengths. How big they are, how much they weigh compared to you, how much stronger or quicker they are than you. You have to look at the things that aren’t as tangible as the obvious.
Does he take a step towards you or away from you when the bell first rings? Does his eyes dart towards the camera instead of upon you? Is he looking towards the audience for inspiration or strength? Is he showing signs of arrogance? Does his temper flare because you jam a thumb in his throat or does he streak back afraid of another manipulation of the rules?
Those are the things you’re gonna learn from me. You’re going to recognize those little things that so many people ignore or forget. You’re going to sacrifice yourself, your beliefs, and possibly the years of your life for something as simple as a victory. You’re gonna do whatever it takes to keep from looking up at those lights at the end of the night.
It’s the things I’m going to do against Jay Stevens. It’s the advantages that I’m always looking for in my opponents. It’s the weaknesses, the exploits of his game plan, and even those of the referee. “
He points towards the video monitor as the NPW show from May 25th begins playing.
“Jay Stevens did what he thought needed to be done to win that Cruiserweight Championship. He used the rules to his advantage. He put Lord Dominicus into a position where he had to rely upon the referee. The Champion was the one looking for the referee’s breaking of the hold by using the ropes as his safety net. You think I don’t notice that and not plan for that?
You’re going to sit there and tell me that Jay Stevens always comes out on top? He turned around moments later and had to rely upon the same rope break from the referee. Yeah, I’m the guy that watched the entire match. A match that happened months before my arrival but I’m out here scouting my competition. That’s the kind of guy that I am.”
He motions his students back onto their feet after the lessons of a former and current Champions in Northern Pro. It’s the thing that he wants to accomplish himself. The thing that he wants synonymous with his name; Champion of Northern Pro Wrestling. The Promethean doesn’t doubt his ability nor that of his upcoming opponent. He’s the guy that always has a game plan. That’s always playing chess inside of the ring.
Champ, you’re opponent that’s going to push you like no other has arrived.
