Minerva: Stand forward if you wish to not be a Judge.
D watches with an incredulous look on his face as he watches twelve of the twenty Valkyries step forward. This is where Esmeralda’s promises are going to break. He’s sure of it. Esmeralda smiles.
Esmeralda von Krauss: You will all be granted the five thousand dollars when I can have the cash delivered to my room. It is a shame that you will not become Judges, but I have high hopes that you will all go on to something great. As for the rest of you, I will give each of you five thousand dollars as well. You will want to spend that on the amenities that this town can offer before you begin your real training. Are you satisfied with this result, D? Twelve of the twenty recruits will be going on with their lives and not being Judges.
D: It is a small victory, but I will take it.
Esmeralda keeps her eyes on D, getting out her deep red foot long cigarette holder and lighting up a fresh Egyptian cigarette.
Esmeralda von Krauss: That’s not all you will be taking tonight, dahling. My Valkyries and those who were once my Valkyries. Do you want to see what experienced Judges can do?
A resounding cheer goes up from both the girls who stayed and the girls who want to leave. An exhibition fight would be grand right about now.
D keeps his eyes on Esmeralda, though his peripheral vision keeps track of the veterans as they move into position by Esmeralda.
D: You do not want to do this.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Oh, you know it’s been long in coming. Salacia, take him down.
Salacia: With pleasure, mistress.
D backs up a few steps as Salacia steps forward. She sneers at him.
Salacia: Always have I heard of your name. D did this, D did that. The only one to leave after completing one hundred kills. So great is he. So deadly is he. I have stayed beyond my hundred kills and you would think that I would have more glories heaped upon me than you, but no. You remain her favorite, despite the fact that you oppose her.
Salacia leaps at D, aiming at his shoulder with a knife edge chop. D sidesteps the attack and leans in with a strike to the midsection that Salacia blocks with her elbow. She turns and slashes at D with the tips of her fingers, aiming for his throat, but D palm strikes upwards to hit her in the elbow to knock the attack away. Salacia drops to sweep the feet out from under D, but he leaps into the air into a moonsault ax kick that Salacia flips backwards into a kick to D’s leg that sends him back flipping away from her.
Salacia lands on her feet and launches into a spear, but D manages to seize her by the waist first. He lifts her up and tosses her to her back, but she lands on her feet instead. She hits the floor and begins twisting to hit a roundhouse kick. D catches her by the ankle, sweeps her other foot out from under her, and kicks her in the side of the head as she hits the floor. D watches her, but she does not rise. He squats down by her and checks for a pulse. He stands up and faces the others.
D: She will live.
Esmeralda nods, blowing smoke into the air.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Excellent! Excellent work. Can you handle two at a time I wonder? Juno, Vesta?
Juno: We will handle this, mistress.
Vesta: Have no fear.
Vesta and Juno flank D, who backs away to try to keep some space between him and the deadly assassins. The women strike out at once, launching a flurry of strikes at D, who holds them both at bay with preternaturally fast deflections and blocks. Still, as fast as D is, Vesta strikes him in the rib cage hard enough to send him at Juno, who lands a strike in the side of D’s head.
The two women do a simultaneous kick to the chest that D manages to block with his forearms, but the impact makes him slide backwards several feet. Juno sweeps low while Vesta kicks high. D leaps through the air, turning to his side and corkscrewing toward the women between their attacks. He uppercuts Vesta in the air while also kicking Juno. The three split up with Vesta landing on one side of D and Juno hopping up to her feet on the other side of D.
Now with the women on either side of him, they launch into a refreshed attack. This time, D is battered from side to side as he cannot possibly go from front to back in his defenses. D does a quick flip into a handstand before twisting to do a spinning kick to both girls to drive them back away from him. He lands his feet onto the floor before taking to the air again. He grabs Vesta with his legs in a scissors lock before throwing her at Juno with a hurricanrana. D jumps to his feet while Juno and Vesta jump to theirs.
D launches himself at the women, dodging under a kick by Juno and palm striking Vesta in the midsection. He palm strikes a leaping uppercut into a backflip that also hits Juno in the top of the head with an ax kick. D lands on his feet as both women crumple to the floor. D goes to check on them as he did with Salacia, but Esmeralda hisses.
Esmeralda von Krauss: They will be fine. They will waken later with dreadful headaches, but they will be fine. You have but one Goddess left to face, D.
D: No.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Awww, but would you want to upset her? She knows your moves so well. Minerva?
Minerva smiles as she goes to stand before D.
Minerva: I am not like the others…
D: I know. Do not do this.
Minerva: And not test the mettle of my only friend? You know you can’t best me.
D wipes blood from the corner of his mouth and gets into a fighting stance.
D: Very well. Have it your way.
