(Open to Jack’s place where the bar is having one of it’s quiet times, which is good because Jack is in the middle of talking with the staff.
(Jack is finishing up when the door opens and Cornel “King” Kingston enters with a heavy sigh. Jack rushes to greet him warmly and get him set up in a chair.)
Ruby: King! Great to see you.
King: It’s always a pleasure to come in here. At least this place is air conditioned. Not like I’m sitting outside while you hug a tree or something.
Ruby: Well, I’m glad you’re here. I have something special for you.
(Ruby turns to the crew.)
Ruby: Moe! Would you please bring out Kings special?
Moe: I’m on it.
Ruby: So, King, what brings you here?
King: Aside from the air conditioning? I wanted to congratulate you my boy. That was a fine exhibition you put on.
Ruby: Thank you. I think it went well.
King: Went well? My boy, you were awe inspiring. I’m sure those black hand cretins are shaking in their boots at the thought of facing anybody from the faction.
(Moe comes to the table with a tray of eclairs and a pitcher of ice-cold lemonade.)
Moe: Here ya go, King. Compliments of the house.
(King immediately snags an éclair and stuffs it in his mouth. He pours a glass of lemonade and drinks it down in a single gulp.)
King: Ah, my boy! That certainly does hit the spot.
(King makes a grab at another éclair.)
King: Uh, Jack, do you mind if I have a word with Moe?
Ruby: Of course not.
(King turns to Moe)
King: Moe, be careful son.
Moe: Pardon me?
King: You interfered with Annie Castle, you kept her from following her natural instincts.
Moe: I knew dat the odds were stacked against her and I didn’t want to see her get hurt.
King: Yet you sat right in the front row and watched her match. You don’t want to see her get hurt, yet you watch her in action.
Moe: It’s complicated.
King: I completely understand. I, too, hate to see either Pixi or Jack get hurt. When Jack lost his hand I was totally devastated, however I am pleased with how things have turned out. However, you may want to have a word or two with Annie about this. She may not appreciate what you did for her.
Moe: I know. I’m hoping that she’ll pay the place a visit so I can let her know…
King: Careful my boy.
Moe: Yeah, I know. Thanks for da advice.
King: (around a mouthful of éclair) Any time. Any time at all. Now…
(King finishes off the eclairs and lemonade. He sits back, pats his ample midsection and pushes his chair back)
King: Jack, a pleasure as always. Thanks for the eclairs. And that lemonade really cooled me down after being outside in that miserable heat. But I have to back to my office. You get ready for the next show.
Ruby: Don’t worry, I’ll be ready.
(Fade to black as King moves his impressive bulk with an amazing ease out the door and into the heat of the day)
