Two months ago I promised Windsor that I would review the new Hell Cop comic and last week the first edition of the new version came out and I'll get to the review of this new version. Yes it's a new version of it and before I get to the new Hell Cop I want to remind comic book readers of the original. The year was 1999 and Image comics came out with this new comic about a trans dimensional portal 1301-A that was inhabited by demons. The government decided to create a police force to patrol this new dimension
called The Pan Dimensional Police Force also known The Hell Cops. The main character was named Virgil Hill, whom on the original cover looked like pro wrestler Shawn Michaels if he was a police officer in Hell Cop. The original Hell Cop was a bit campy and humorous since he had eyes for his female partner and his rival, a fellow officer, named Andre didn't like it at all. Needless to say Hell Cop lasted only five or six issues.
Fast forward to 2021 and Image Comics has revived Hell Cop again and unlike the original 1999 version where Virgil Hill was a bit like a ladies man. This version is a bit dark and more crime mystery noir mixed with potential conspiracy theorist paranoia. Virgil Hill is still the original main character in Hell Cop and he's still on the beat battling demonic criminals. The difference is the cover in Issue No. 1 shows Virgil as if he just stepped out of an H.G. Wells novel. He also has a female partner named Karen and yes the character of Andre is still apart of this comic. The plot this time seems to revolve around a symbol from Dimension 1301-A and it involves murder that seems to be leading to a potentially entertaining plotline if the writers can keep the consistency which I feel they can. The original Hell Cop creator Brian Haberlin and Shadow Line once again co produce this comic and it looks like Hell Cop could have a longer life if the creators can make it suspenseful and have plenty of twists and turns. I hope so. If you buy and read and like this new version. Go to the back bins and find the original and enjoy that version as well. You won't regret it
