Javier: Why did you do this?
He wants to know why I chose a match with Lord Dominicus. We sit her in the gym after a long training session for this huge tag match and he still wants to know why? I wipe the sweat from my brow with a towel and look him right in the eyes.
El Combatiente: Why wouldn’t I choose Lord Dominicus?
He’s speechless. That doesn’t happen often, but he doesn’t have a response because there really isn’t a reason I wouldn’t face Lord Dominicus. He takes a breath thinking about how to work what he says next.
Javier: Because he’s my friend.
Now I’m speechless. I know Javier had been hiding a relationship with Dominicus behind my back, but I thought it was just a working relationship. I thought he was moonlighting on me for work, but to call him a friend? Now I am the one silent.
Javier: I know it might not make sense, and you might not understand, but he is a friend. When I first tabbed him to be your tag team partner in the ANZAC Cup it was because I hoped a bit of his evil would rub off on you, but it didn’t stick and that’s fine. When I needed a friend, though, he was there.
Now I’m confused. When has he needed a friend. I have always been here for him, by his side. When would he need someone else?
Javier: When you were in the hospital…
Oh, that’s why.
Javier: …I didn’t know what to do. I felt powerless. I couldn’t help you and the doctor was basically telling me it was all my fault. That’s when I got a text from LD. He said he hates to see injuries to people unless he does it. We began texting more frequently and then he needed help figuring out how to find all of the Ebony Stones so I gave him a hand. He had been searching for them already, but wanted an outside opinion. It helped me feel connected to the wrestling world and keep my mind off of what happened to you for just a little bit. That was important for me, because when I saw you in that hospital bed I wasn’t sure we’d ever get back here.
I just stare at Javier. I understand why he took the call. I understand why he wanted to help, but I need to hear it from him.
Javier: Our first go round in the XHF I knew there was an expiration date, but figured we were doing so well we would find work somewhere. We didn’t, though. You were black balled and I was forced to go back to translating for the government. I never imagined it would be so long before we worked together again, so when you were laid up and LD called, I couldn’t help myself and I’m sorry.
He’s sorry. He’s said that to me before and I could tell he didn’t mean it. Like when I caught him getting involved in my match with Psychotic Goth. This time seems different, he seems genuine.
El Combatiente: I believe you, but you should have told me. Instead I had to figure out from someone else. I waited for you to tell me and when you didn’t I couldn’t help that feel it was because you were preparing to jump ship. That’s why when this opportunity arose I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d rather face.
Javier: Well there are plenty of people I’d rather you face, but there’s nothing I can do to change that now.
El Combatiente: That’s right, you can’t, and if you hadn’t lied to me you wouldn’t be in this situation. Now you have a choice to make at Xtreme Xmas. Whose side are you on?
I walk away before he can answer. I don’t want an answer now. I don’t know if I want an answer at all. Javier is my closest friend and if he chose Dominicus I’m not sure what I would do.
We open up on El Combatiente. He’s standing alone in the lock room of the gym. He’s changed since we saw him earlier. He’s fresh out of the shower and ready to leave, but first he looks into the camera and in a rare moment he speaks directly to the camera.
El Combatiente: I’m sure by now you understand why I chose to face you Dominicus. It is not the first time you came between my manager and myself. Now in this Broken Hearts Match the time has come to put an end to this. He’s going to have to choose a side, and when I’m done with you I’ll have proven to him why I am the right choice. You see Dominicus, he keeps running to you because he thinks he needs evil, but I’ve been watching you and I know the truth.
El Combatiente takes a beat and then exclaims very matter of factly.
El Combatiente: You’re not evil.
He lets that hang for just a moment before continuing on.
El Combatiente: You’re just a guy who wants to appear evil, but you’re not fooling me. The real reason Javier is drawn to you is not because you’re evil, but because when you strip away the fake evil bravado all you are is me. You’re just a good wrestler hiding his identity from the world doing what he loves, just, like, me.
He again pauses, letting that hang in the air.
El Combatiente: I know, that you know, that this is true, but you’ll never admit it will you? No, because it would ruin your mystique. Dark mask, dark tights, feigned evil, you must be a bad guy, but you’re not, and when I prove it to be so Javier’s choice will be easy and I’ll be done with you for good.
With that we fade on the masked man to black.
