Esmeralda von Krauss looks around the room after Donzig had left. Her clowns were in varying states of injury though Sticky seems to be stirring the quickest. He sits up and grins at Esmeralda, black ooze dripping off of his chin from where his needle sharp teeth pierce black gums.
Sticky the Clown: We thought we could take him, Mistress. At least weaken him.
Esmeralda just smiles, striking a match to light an Egyptian cigarette inside of a foot long holder.
Esmeralda von Krauss: He would have outclassed all of these other clowns, but I was shocked that he managed to bring you down.
Sticky’s hand goes to his eye. There’s no sign of the damage that was wrought against him, but it’s still on his mind.
Sticky the Clown: He knows what I am and did not hold back.
Esmeralda raises an eyebrow in surprise.
Esmeralda von Krauss: That is interesting. I wonder if he knows what I am…
Sticky the Clown: Unlikely. I don’t even really know what you are. Beyond not human.
Esmeralda walks over to where Hehehe and Hahaha are starting to wake up. She kicks Hehehe in the butt.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Get up, you fools. We have to get going. Wake up. Wake up!
In a few minutes of being constantly berated while getting up, Sir Monocle, Hehehe, Hahaha, and Sticky the Clown are up. Esmeralda blows smoke into the air with a forced smile.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Now let’s get out of here before you fools double again.
Hehehe: Double-
Hahaha: Again?
Esmeralda von Krauss: Nun, das wird nicht gut.
Esmeralda’s free hand goes to her head and she collapses onto the floor, scattering away her cigarette and snapping her holder in half.
Esmeralda wakes up in a hospital bed, only Minerva is by her side.
Minerva: They say you might have had a mini stroke. They don’t think there’s going to be any lasting damage from it though.
Esmeralda gives Minerva a harrowing glare, making even the seasoned Judge back up a few steps.
Esmeralda von Krauss: I have not even had a common cold since embarking upon the Maze. Was ist hier los?
Minerva: It could be that your body had sustained more damage from your battle with the Cthulhu Priest-witch than what was previously known. You did almost go to Hell. You did have to travel through the Earth.
Esmeralda nods, seeing the fact that she is connected to a number of machines to monitor her health, which is fine right now.
Esmeralda von Krauss: I can’t be showing weakness to Donzig or Spike Kane after I defeat Donzig. I will be fine. Just fine.
Minerva bows, but still looks concerned.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Go. Take care of the Valkyries and the Einherjar.
Minerva: Yes, mistress.
Minerva leaves the room and it isn’t long before Esmeralda hits the call button.
A nurse walks into the room with a smile. She walks over and presses the button that closes out the call. She places her hand on Esmeralda’s.
Nurse: Anything I can do for you?
Esmeralda seizes the hand and holds on. The nurse forces a smile that quickly changes to an unhappy face as she tries to get out of Esmeralda’s grip.
Esmeralda von Krauss: I want to apologize in advance, dahling, but I need this more than you do.
Nurse: You need what more than I do? My hand? Lemme go!
Esmeralda holds on to the nurse by the wrist and the nurse is fixated upon Esmeralda’s face as the eyeballs seem to liquify and drain down Esmeralda’s face. This is followed by her skin as it melts away to reveal the wet muscular tissue beneath. The nurse stares, her mouth opening wide. She tries to let out the scream that just won’t come out.
The nurse continues to stare, horrifically enthralled as Esmeralda melts down to the bones while still clutching at her. The nurse’s sanity flees from her like a mugger in the night along with something else as motes of light rip through her pores and into Esmeralda’s body. The nurse grows larger, new muscles ripping through skin which reknits as pale flesh. Claws and fangs grow, popping out teeth and nails. The hair turns jet black while the eye color red. Her humanity vacates with her sanity, giving her a beastial look.
Esmeralda releases her wrist and the nurse gives her a look and nods before heading out into the hallway where screams are immediately heard along with a thump.
Esmeralda for her part, looks whole and healthy. In fact, she has a bit of a glow to her skin as if she had been refreshed. She frowns when she hears the smashing of glass and another thump.
Esmeralda von Krauss: I wonder what is going on? Has Minerva returned?
No.
Donzig steps into the room with Sinclair Godfrey close behind. He has some blood splatter across his clothing, is a little wet, and with bloodstained flowers in his hand. He sets the flowers on Esmeralda’s bedside table with a grunt.
Sinclair Godfrey: You must forgive the vaseless flowers. One of the wraiths that used to follow your Krimson Kharnival around was in the hallway.
Donzig: I smashed the vase over its head in order to knock it out.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Aww, you didn’t need to come, dahling. I’m just fine. Just a bit of a fainting spell. Nothing to be concerned over. Must have simply been low blood sugar.
Donzig: Yes, we workaholics sometimes skip a meal. It was my pleasure to come visit, Esmeralda. I’m rather fond of you in that you remind me of my mother.
Sinclair raises an eyebrow, her hand going to Donzig’s arm briefly before he shrugs her off.
Sinclair Godfrey: Your mother is a psychopath?
Donzig: What else would she be?
Esmeralda just chuckles, her eyes searching around the room until she sees her bagged up belongings.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Ah, lovely woman. Very driven.
Donzig: You know my mother?
Esmeralda just waves Donzig off with a hand as she laughs.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Of course I know your mother. I have many more business interests other than a simple assassin’s guild.
Donzig: Of course you do.
Esmeralda von Krauss: One of you be a dahling and grab my bag of belongings over there and bring it to me? I would like to get dressed, I think.
Donzig walks over, grabs the bag, and brings us to her.
Donzig: Would you like us to leave the room while you dress?
Esmeralda von Krauss: Oh no. I’m afraid that I may have lied to you. I really just wanted these.
Esmeralda reaches into her bag and pulls out her pack of Egyptian cigarettes and lighter. She looks around the bag for a moment and frowns when she produces her broken footlong cigarette holder.
Esmeralda von Krauss: Looks at what I am reduced to with one little spell of weakness. I must smoke like some barbarian…
Esmeralda puts the cigarette directly into her mouth without the fancy holder and lights it. She doesn’t look pleased. Donzig looks at her.
Donzig: Your husband smokes that way?
Esmeralda laughs, flicking ashes onto the floor.
Esmeralda von Krauss: What else would he be, dahling? Are you absolutely certain that you do not wish to become a Judge? You would be a powerful addition.
Esmeralda’s predatory grin overcomes her own misery at smoking without her holder.
Esmeralda von Krauss: You might even rival D…
Donzig’s eyes narrow as he looks down for a moment and for a moment Esmeralda wonders if she should be ready for an attack. Donzig must sense this as he quickly smiles.
Donzig: D only wishes he could rival me.
Esmeralda von Krauss: We could blather on about who wishes who could rival who, dahling. Just remember that I set the standard that you both strive to be. I will be the one going on to win at Supremacy over Spike Kane. I will be the next X*Crown champion to become the very best champion in the world. It’s just a matter of Justice, dahling.
Donzig: We are going to find out where you sit in the Donzig-Esmeralda-D triangle as you face both him and me. We could both defeat you.
Esmeralda von Krauss: I suppose you both could. It would make me proud to be defeated, but I will not go down quietly.
Donzig: Nor I. I will be the one with my hand raised.
Esmeralda von Krauss: See? I said it would just go on…
Just then a new nurse comes into the room and begins wavering her hand around the “wave off the smoke”. She sees the couple of cigarette butts on the floor and then looks at Esmeralda, who is smoking another Egyptian cigarette.
Nurse: If you’re going to smoke, you can just change and get out. There’s no smoking here!
Esmeralda nods.
Esmeralda von Krauss: I will be dressed and ready, dahling.
Sticky the Clown: We thought we could take him, Mistress. At least weaken him.
