Sweat drops from Chris Sanderson’s face as he stood outside on what was a pretty warm Miami day. The sun was shining as Chris squares his shoulders and takes a jumpshot at his outdoor basketball court. While it was only one half outside court, he got shots up every day if he could, just in case he got offered a 10 day contract. Chris chases down a make, his attention turning to his wife who was watching him silently. He puts a stop to his shooting and gave her a smile.
Chris: Enjoy the show, Ali?
She gave a nod in return as Chris looks around for a towel to wipe the sweat off. Ali produces a bottle of water for her husband, Chris, giving her a peck on the cheek.
Chris: Thanks. We should sit down. Don’t want you wearing out.
Ali was about six months pregnant at this point as they took a seat on the patio. The patio that hasn’t been seen since Chris did his first couple of promos for NLW.
Chris: You feeling okay?
Ali: Good enough. Not sure I want to do this ever again…
Chris gave her a nod as she tries to get comfortable on the hardwood seat.
Chris: Well I’ve taken care of it so you won’t have to worry about it. I’ve just been trying to take care of a lot of stuff for us. Our future home, our present situation and everything in between. I know we want out of Florida soon because this is a horrible place to raise a family.
He sighs/
Chris: And, if all goes well soon enough, I’ll finally be happy enough to eventually retire before I’m 30 years old.
Ali: You’re on that again?
Chris: What more do I really have left to prove, Ali? I’ve been a champion all over the world. Been an XHF Junior Heavyweight Champion. Now I got this match against Cage coming up that could be the ticket back to being a top guy in the sport.
Chris leans forward to get a bit closer to his wife.
Chris: The last time I was a guy on top of the mountain my right elbow went south at the worst possible time and I dropped the ball. It’s been in my mind since. This NLW Championship match against Nathan is my way back from it. Everything since I’ve joined Next Level Wrestling last year has been about my redemption.
Ali: But Cage… he’s… crazy…
Chris gave her another nod.
Chris: And your point is what? A lot of crazy people get into this sport because it’s the only way they can earn a good living that doesn’t involve flipping burgers at Wendy’s. Crazy doesn’t mean shit. Crazy can be beaten. It’s not like I’m getting into the ring with Michael Myers. I’m getting in there with Nathan Cage who can lose just like everyone else who gets onto that ring.
Now it was her turn to sigh. Ali was concerned with Christopher’s well-being against someone like Nathan Cage who has made a living off of maiming his opponents since he began in NLW.
Ali: Says the guy who lost to a stuffed cat…
That is still a sore spot. Chris stood up, gave her a disapproving look before turning his back to his wife.
Ali: I was kidding you big baby. You rebounded with the battle royale win by going full Cobra Kai and sweeping the leg of that thoterous Eli Dresden!
Ali was no Eli fan. Not at all.
Ali: The only thing that worries me about you against Cage is that sometimes…
Chris turns around as her voice trails off.
Ali: You lack a killer instinct anymore. You’re afraid to really pull the trigger when you need to. You say that your elbow was the issue a few years ago? No, Chris, you just got complacent. Just like you have since high school. You’d make a game winning shot and sleepwalk the next game. You’d win a title and not dig deep enough to beat a guy in a mask and a stuffed animal. You know why people keep saying your dad is better? Because he could dig deep and finish someone off every single night.
Chris stood there, partly in shock at Ali’s honesty, partly because deep down he knew she was right.
Ali: If you even hesitate for one second, Nathan Cage will end you, Chris. You want to play up to being a member of a big time wrestling family? Stop being a fucking pussy and show no mercy like they have.
Ali got up and gave him a kiss on the cheek before going back inside. Chris didn’t move for a while, just thinking about what she said.
