Hey everybody,
Hope everyone's doing well. No one's in trouble or anything, I just know half of you live on Discord and half of you only come to the forum so this is the best place to make sure everyone gets hit. A couple of updates.
Thanks for the Feedback!
Strych and I have been reading the feedback and appreciating the positivity and the challenging ways to get better. A couple of quickfire thoughts on what people'd like. Feel free to continue thinking out loud below or privately in Discord:
1) We're still working on creating a fallback option of a time limit, ala "Agree to an RP limit by this date", but something should be coming soon. If you both hit over time, the idea will probably be to write 1 at unlimited, but I'm interested in any one's thoughts -- this is just to cut down on "well two weeks have passed and they haven't agreed to anything, what do I do" questions.
2) The reason there's no official RP rubric anywhere is that Fizz and I have surprisingly wildly different RP tastes, and whenever we use Network admins for a match (whenever Fizz/I wrestle), their tastes are even more different. There's famously someone on the Network who scores with a 50-point system; Fizz and I look more closely at core elements and vibes. Going forward though, I have vowed to strike the language "well the other person was just better" as feedback -- I'll be more thorough and let you pick my brain, even if it makes me feel awkward, because the name of the game is growth.
(But just so you all know, this is the most talented e-fed I've ever seen, and based on my opinions on the future of e-fedding, maybe will ever see. Losing matches sucks big time but we have so many talented people here that it happens maybe more times than you'd like. You can always PM/DM us to ask for RP feedback after a show goes up, we'll be happy to provide. It does not affect your booking to ask for feedback, it is actually more likely to get you closer to a championship).
3) Some general requests for character control -- we're not an angled fed, so we do have to run with the whims of who RPs best on a given week, et cetera. I have two booking patterns -- build to title matches and PPVs when building a card, and then in the moments of building a show "what would be a good way to make this more interesting/give the writers something they can use in their roleplays". We are happy to build towards storylines and rivalries, we'll also spice them up and tweak directions a bit to make a project stronger as a whole. Sometimes we're running on the same train track, sometimes we're running parallel. We do read the roleplays and make notes and try to act on them if we can. You can always submit creative/spots and shoot us general notes about your character/character motives, we don't always use all the spots but we really are trying to look out for making all of you as big of stars as we can.
Heatseeker Matches Are Coming!
A little bit if inside baseball here -- I don't love constantly having triple threats/fourways/sixways/everyone not in a match matches. We did get some feedback that people weren't hype to enter the battle royale, and I get why. We're very used to singles matches in modern TV wrestling, and it's hard to figure out how to write against an opponent when the number of opponents you fight changes on an exponential baseball. However, writing eight matches a show in the style we do (at least 1500 words including entrances) x 8 matches would be like 12,000 words in a week. Last Inferno was 19K, the previous was 12K, GR was 18K. We love writing bangers, but we're a crew of two people + Sam Sawyer (who is kicking so much ass writing, thank you Sam) + whoever we can kindly beg to write a match to alleviate our workload (thanks!). So we'd love more singles matches, but we can't write detailed matches without breaking ourselves, and people aren't super jumping at the chance to write matches. So, the solution: Heatseeker Matches.
These are matches that take place after the Lighting the Fire segment that will be presented in 500-word summaries. They are still canonically television matches and influence the world of FIRESIDE, just for one constraint or another (usually lack of writing power) they aren't being written into a full detailed match. This will allow us to continue FIRESIDE into 2022 and hopefully beyond without wanting to die; our original styles were meant much for pandemic-life where no one ever had anything to do besides work and sleeping.
Quickfire:
a) You'll always be alerted on that showcard that your match is in the Heatseeker section. This is so you don't like write a 2K RP and then get sad you got something that didn't match that wordcount. You can still agree to/write 2K if you want, but we want to temper your expectations.
b) These matches are still canon and will usually still fall under FIRESIDE's guiding principles (mostly that every match means something/is building to something).
c) If you want your match off of the Heatseeker section, you can volunteer to write it with your opponent's okay (or their help!). We'll send you PMs/guides/advice and help on how to fit our style and improve as a matchwriter.
Rumble Incentives
Live on April 24th, the 2022 XHF Rumble brings wrestlers from all over the Network together for one giant Royal Rumble-style battle royale where the winner becomes the X-Crown champion. (Obligatory I won two years ago mention that I will include until I die.) (Also sorry to the one person who specifically asked for not this.)
There a couple of reasons to enter naturally:
1) The winner receives the X-Crown championship, the biggest championship in the Network, a title made of 40? dead world championships that has a history dating back to 2002. It is an honor.
2) People are much, much more likely to read your RPs because people from all over the Network are reading your material, some to judge and some to compete against you.
3) Because the nature of the match RP window is unlimited RPs for about three and a half weeks, and everyone is reading them, you have the ability to tell a long-term story in roleplaying, which isn't common.
However, because it is an unlimited RP match window for 3.5 weeks beginning in April and ending sometimes toward the end of April, a lot of people look at it and go: well, I'm not gonna win, that's no fun, I'm out. The average top ten finisher puts out something around 5-6 RPs. And I will say, yeah. Like March Madness, the majority of entrants lose, but the Rumble is a magical place where you come alive and put yourself on the map. Bloodied Fox made himself but the 2020 Rumble certainly helped wake people up to the idea that the guy [censored].
To encourage people to fall in love with the Rumble like we do, we've built in a few incentives. The way these work, you take the basic entrant prize + the biggest award you qualify for. Here's the list:
Incentive List:
1) Enter the Rumble (this means RPing at least once) -- receive a future non-title, any stip (within reason) match against anyone you'd like (non-Caffrey) on a future Inferno
2) Score an elimination (in the match itself, which usually takes at least two RPs) -- receive a future SPARK title shot
3) Finish in the top ten (again in the match itself, this translates to like four RPs of strong quality) -- receive a future FIRESIDE World title shot
4) Eliminate Anthony Caffrey (good f'n luck, because I aim to win the whole thing) -- receive a special prize (last year was a one-on-one X-Crown title shot!)
Please note we are open to the idea of RPing for the Inferno in April also counting for RPing for the Rumble, but shoot us a message first if that's the plan.
We take this list very seriously. I still have written down Kanyon is owed his world title shot, and I damn sure will pay it (the guy has been tag team champion for forever). There are other ways to qualify for things as FIRESIDE is a garden of opportunity, but this is a great way to get yourself on the map if you're wanting to shoot up the card and remain there.
Team FIRESIDE is Coming!
We're waiting to hear on what the format of XHF: Call to Arms will look like this year (coming up in June I believe), but last year it was 5-on-5 matches. If your team wins, your whole team enters Overheated, where if participants win that they enter the X-Crown championship match at Night of Champions. Team FIRESIDE last year was honestly a bit of a let-down (though it did help put a few people on the map), and we'll be looking to build the team up for this year coming up, probably through qualifying matches (if you want to team up outside/with your friends or whatever, go for it). This is basically a note saying we will have similar incentives to the Rumble for Team(s) FIRESIDE when we get there, stay tuned.
Hope everyone's doing well. No one's in trouble or anything, I just know half of you live on Discord and half of you only come to the forum so this is the best place to make sure everyone gets hit. A couple of updates.
