Scene opens inside of a gym where NLW’s premier and original tag team, the New South is training. Waylon Kirk is lying down on a bench press with his partner, Beau Traywick spotting him.
Beau: Come on dude, don’t wimp out now. One more!
Waylon Kirk grunts and struggles to get the bar up but finally does. Once his weight is finally racked, he lays motionless on the bench.
Waylon grunt in pain.
Beau: Come on now, we’ve got our first match in a while this weekend. We need to be on our A game if we don’t want to get eaten alive.
Waylon: Trust me, I’m aware.
Beau: Are you? My guy, we’re jumping right back in the ring with two other tag teams this week - The Ronin and Midnight Animals. Their names are legit ridiculous but they’re going to be gunning for us.
Waylon: I don’t know, I think Ronin sounds kind of cool. And they’re legit - tough as hell veteran and a young gun with a lot to prove. Sounds familiar.
Beau: Yeah, it’s the Academy 2.0 - and we've beaten them before. Honestly, we shouldn’t be opening the show against teams that aren’t on our level.
Waylon: We took a breather, we’ve got to re-establish ourselves and prove it over again.
Beau Traywick waves the comment away and trades places with Waylon Kirk, lying on the bench.
Beau: I’m sick and tired of proving ourselves - we’ve been there, done that. And instead of making the champs bleed, we’re jerking curtains with some kid and his grandpa and a couple of dudes that saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre too many times.
Beau starts aggressively benching with Waylon trying to slow him down.
Waylon: It’s ok to be hungry, hell, I get it. I don’t want to be facing these four - I want those tag titles as bad as you do. We’ve been so close before. We were almost the inaugural champions. And that burns me up every day.
The two are silent for a moment.
Waylon: But that’s just all the more reason to prep for Saturday, get our heads on straight and game plan. If we lose our cool, then we don’t stand a chance. If we go in like a unified front, no team can match us.
Beau sits up from the bench.
Beau: I don’t need any more prep, I’m ready to go now.
The two stare at each other silently for a moment before Jolene comes over, finished with her workout and steps in between them.
Jolene: You boys all good?
Waylon: I’m good. I’ve got my eyes on the prize and I’m focused. You good Beau?
Beau looks intensely at his partner before finally breaking in to a smile.
Beau: I’m great. My boy has his head in the game and he’s one hundred percent. We’re going to be unstoppable.
Beau sticks a fist out towards Waylon who bumps it back with a fist.
Waylon: Hell yeah. Me and you focused and on the same page? Jolene calling the shots from the outside. The Ronin and the Night Mutts don’t stand a chance.
Beau: That’s what I’m talking about.
Jolene: Glad to know we’re all focused. We get through this match and then focus on what’s next. Beau - you’ve got the G1 coming up.
Waylon: And don’t forget, I set the bar for you last year.
Beau: You did, that’s true. But I’ve got some stuff up my sleeve, don’t worry.
Waylon: I know you do buddy, and I’ll be right there by your side.
The three start to walk away from the weights.
Waylon: I’m going to have a steam, you in?
Beau: Nah, I’m going to grab a smoothie.
Waylon: Jo?
Jolene: I’m actually kind of thirsty.
Waylon: Fair enough. Grab me a green juice.
Beau: Done.
The three all fist bump and separate.
Fade to black y’all.
