The sound of Keahi’s voice had summoned the two guards standing outside Naru’s bedroom into the room, guns pointed, but in the instant they attempted to call for back-up, a high-pitched whine from the wand she’d plucked from the safe of the Iberian villa shorted out first the radios, then some gadgets on the weapons they’d produced. They were still able to fire the weapons, but in the confusion, they could only get off rushed shots that went wide as Keahi bundled Naru into her craft, which repelled the gunfire as the wheezing, groaning piston in the center of the control room accelerated its movement to produce whatever force it uses to pull itself through space and time in the way it does.
Waiting on the craft, in case they were needed, were Sapphire and “Lee,” though at Keahi’s beckoning, while in something called the “Time Vortex,” he revealed his given birth name to be Donovan Davenport. As they “took off,” whatever that means, everyone around Naru seems to relax, though her own reaction was one of astonishment. With a moment to comprehend what was around her, the thought that this huge vaulted ceiling could not have fit in her walk-in catches up with the flight instinct of escaping her father’s armed guards.
“What a glorious machine...” Naru does a view circles on the spot, looking high and low while holding a white floppy hat so it won’t fall off her head. After a moment, she stops and turns to Keahi. “Is this what my father wanted to find?”
“Partially. He and his associates are mainly after the secrets of immortality, but it’s a lot easier to find with a dimensional time machine connected to the essence of the universe.”
The other two watch in awe. Both of them in their separate introductions to the marvel of dimensional engineering had obsessed over the difficulty of being in a big box that was contained inside of a smaller box, but Naru seems to have glossed right past that. Though they regather themselves quickly, because her question is a sound one.
“Normally it’s all about money, but if you’ve got the power to ignore money, then that’s even better I guess.”
Naru nods, then takes another pass at looking around the room. It’s amazing, but also she has definitely, fully rebelled from her father now. Nowhere in his holdings will be safe for her. She probably won’t be killed...but he’s definitely working on a short list of advantageous marriages to trap her in.
“So what happens now?” Naru asks as she takes a deep breath.
“Depends.” Keahi had spent the last few minutes as Naru pondered the situation and her future moving around the strange wheezing piston and the hexagonal control panel that surrounds it. She stops at a point where she can see all three humans and raises an eyebrow. “Where do you wanna go?”
“As much as I would love to galavant around the universe, and as much as I don’t want to bring more trouble to my family, I think I have to stay.”
“If it helps, intel from Yin--”
“I thought you were using real names here.”
“If it were my secret, I would.” Sapphire ponders this for a second, then nods at the sense of it. “We had intel that whoever is funding your friend Kim mainly cares about chasing Keahi now, or hunting for other legends of immortality. She’ll probably still tail you, but she doesn’t have her own forces to terrorize you. My group can defend against that.”
Keahi nods. “Disappointing, but I understand. Hopefully we can have an adventure one day where things end relatively well. And you, as well, Donovan. The invitation is there.” She does a playful bow to the pair, and they nod back. She then turns to Naru. “I think it’s safe to assume you’ll be riding with me for a while?”
“Yes. My father can try as he might to exert his will over me, but if he can’t find me, there’s nothing to hold down.”
“Not to be the Capitalist Devil’s Advocate, but if he is part of the group chasing Keahi, that makes it possible he’ll catch up to you as well.”
“Possible, but not likely. At the very least, he won’t go himself, so I can imagine him stewing at home while I’m exploring sights I’ve never imagined.”
Sapphire nods, then walks forward to shake her hand. “I wish you luck.”
“Don’t hesitate to call on us if you have reason to come back to our dimension.”
Keahi smiles, then resumes the manipulations of her controls. With a big ka-CHUNK of the main lever, the room lurches as the device pierces back through the Vortex.
Keahi closes the door on her apartment, which is now Sapphire’s and “Lee’s” apartment, walking back to the controls. Naru is just smiling at her as Keahi hits a few buttons, then pulls the lever, but when it goes ka-CHUNK, the room lurches harder than they expected, making them clutch to railings and consoles to not fall. The light in the room flashes as Keahi pulls herself around the console to check readings or engage failsafes.
“What’s happening?”
“Not sure...let’s land and make sure nothing’s damaged...” She hits a few things, including one thing literally with a mallet. The room resets, causing the women to take deep breaths. Keahi cautiously opens the door into normal reality. She opens it directly into a familiar face.
“Ah, Miss Sparks. I was worried when I couldn’t contact you. Are you ready for your match tonight? If not, I’d say you have about an hour to prepare.”
Keahi turns sheepishly back to Naru. “Sorry. One last job. I’ll be right with you.” And then she steps out of the machine and into BB Gunn’s office.
