It was the eighteenth of July. The summer heat rolled in upon one like the engulfing waves of a dry sea, a thick material substance against which one seemed to push when moving about. He didn´t move one finger, while laying on the lounge, on the country manor´s veranda. The heat meant business this time of the summer, he couldn´t even find the energy to walk toward the sea. It was something like twenty minutes away, on foot, nothing much of a trip in any other given moment of the day, but not now. He yawned and stretched his arms, lazy and sleepy.
It was on moments like these when he wished for a soft breeze to caress his face, like the ones one experienced in a Kyoto Sunset. Not that the Sicilian sea breeze left anything to be desired, he loved his country and its beauty, it was just that in these moments he reminisced of the times of his youth when he was still searching, searching for answers, looking to improve, questioning himself about every decision made. It was the time of getting better, the time of, sometimes, doubt, and the time of perplexity when things didn´t go right.
They threw him out of the Tiger´s Den Dojo, as if he was a ragged doll, just because he didn’t want to cripple his fellow trainee. He had been looking for a home away from home ever since he left Sicily, to wander around the world so that he could become better, and just when he thought he had found one, reality slapped him harshly in the face.
He had had difficult times, times in which he questioned himself and his hopes, but even in these difficult times he never gave up, got never discouraged, and questioned never the goodness in humans. Nothing like Psychotic Goth, who even if he left himself down and fell victim to depression and angst, still thought he was on the right track, thought he was strong and doing the right thing.
He switched his android phone´s camera on.
Ready.
Roll.
“Even if you are surrounded by tigers. Even if the only wolf in a pack of coyotes. Even if you are the only albatross flying where only eagles dare…
…you should never give in to despair. Goth, you say you had a bad family relationship; you say you were rejected by your teammates; you say and imply that society is at fault for your choices. You underline that people are to blame for your depression.
And I disagree!
Looking from my perspective? The perspective of someone who in his early youth thought his family did not understand him and his dreams, the perspective of someone who was almost crippled by his friends and comrades of the Tigers Den Dojo and thrown out of the place, merely because he did not want to be violent with a downed opponent, the point of view of someone who had nothing to eat and slept under the stars. Looking from this perspective, one like me still thinks that life is there to be loved, that humans are good deep in their hearts, and that one should be honest, humble, honor-full, and live with dignity.
Goth you say you are strong because you stared hell in the eyes and are still here to teach me a lesson about that. I say that you are your very own personal hell. Looking at life in black and white, falling victim to negativism and depression, shunning everyone away-not because they are bad but because of your fear of humans- all these are not feats of strength, no.
They are a projection of weakness.
There is no strength in someone who has given up!
Resilience is the answer. People look at resilient kids and youth and say they are magic, that they got some kind of superpower, but that is not the truth. Resilient kids are not super humans, they got no superpower. What they got is the strength to believe in their dreams and believe in human nature. Believe in their friends and think that everything will be ok in the end.
Goth, you are not strong.
You are a Deserter…
…You have deserted the will to live. You have given up on not only your dreams but also yourself. I have seen people like you before, fought them before, and emerged victorious before. Not because I have beaten them in the ring, they might even have beaten me sometimes, but because I have taught them the meaning of hope and dreams.
Goth, you might even win this fight.
But all of it, not even the commonwealth championship, doesn’t have and make any sense if what you wear are the clothes of a loser. And believe me when I say it, Goth, you are a loser and a bad one at it too. Not because you lose in the ring, you might even win more than you lose, but because you lose in the greater fight of life.
If you are a loser and face me for this belt?
Then I will make it a mission of mine to show you, in this fight, what the true meaning of a winner mentality is. You will throw me down and DDT me on the mat, but I will stand up over and over again, even if my energies might be close to null. Why? Because I believe in myself and I have an iron will. Because I have hopes and believe in dreams.
Goth, even if my sun goes down the next fight night
It will shine strongly on an upcoming day.
That is the music of life
It´s what I have learned in Japan.
All of it is a beautiful…
…Kyoto Sunset.”
The heat was rolling on. He yawned again, after switching the android phone camera off, and after some relaxed breathing fell into a deep slumber.
