“Beating the best of the business isn’t enough, now is it?”
:: The scene fades in. To the mask on the floor. ::
“I’m already known as the best of the business, but that was back then.”
:: A hand grabs the mask down below. ::
“I want to be the best of all time.”
:: The mask stretches over his head. ::
“So when I see some nobody no one knows or caresabout, calling themselves the best to the point that it's their moniker, I have to speak up. As someone who’s taken that walk around the block before, I can’t help but feel a bit…”
:: A fist with white sports tape around the hands comes crashing into a nearby locker. ::
“Disrespected.”
:: That hand pulls back, revealing the dent. The fist slowly uncurls. ::
“It seems that you’re a bit new here, …Razor Blade.”
:: CURE-E treats that name with a fair bit of vitriol as he forces it out of his mouth. ::
“So because of your lack of tenure, I’ll tell you a few things you may not know about how this industry works.”
“If you greet a businessman, you shake his hand. If you meet royalty, you bow. If you stand in front of a judge, you call him “your honor”. And if you happen to find yourself in a wrestling ring, you don’t STEAL HIS GODDAMN TITLE.”
:: He turns to the camera. ::
“You may not have thought I was paying attention. Maybe this mask is tricking you, and you have no idea who I am. Maybe you’re just not paying attention and couldn’t remember who undisputedly changed the face of wrestling over fifteen years ago.”
“You might be asking if I’ve made such a name of myself, why I'm hiding behind a mask. To which I reply, this is why I have the mask. To deliver that message.”
“People haven’t been following up on their history. All they needed to hear was “The Best” and they’d know exactly who that is. I’m not so sure that’s true today. Because if it was, then we wouldn’t have some fraud with a Pokemon move for a name, claiming to fire from the hip like he's Han Solo.”
“So for someone waltzing into the ring with MY title and giving us some half-hearted apology about how he constantly loses and then admitting to the crowd here that you couldn’t give a shit if you lose in the future, you’ll have to excuse me if I come across as slighted... if I’m not rushing to the ring and asking for an autograph and a picture that I can upload to Instagram.”
:: With a tsk, CURE-E shakes his head disappointingly. ::
“At Ascendancy, I won’t punish you. I won’t send you to the proverbial “hell and back”. I’m going to treat you the way that you describe yourself. If you want to call yourself “The Best in the World” I’m going to show you what that means. And if I end up kicking every last tooth you have down your throat, well then you'll know how you got there.”
“It’s just a little something called respect. It’s something you don’t have. Something that evidently hasn't been taught to you. And who better than someone who has reached the pinnacle of the wrestling ring and won the X*Crown Championship?”
“But no, you’re right. You’re the best in the world. You. Someone who no one would know from a hole in the wall and actually lost most of their matches this year. So tell me, ugh. …Razor Blade. Tell me how someone who is on the receiving end of the pin for months and months on end straight can claim that title.”
:: CURE-E pauses. He holds out his ear and invites a response. After a moment, he makes a buzzer sound.::
“Time’s up. The answer is you can’t. And if you’ve been able to keep from lieing to yourself long enough to listen, maybe you'd realize the real question is how you can win as at Ascendancy. Unfortunately, that question has a very similar answer. You won’t. Remember, I’m the teacher and I'm teaching the lesson.”
:: CURE-E exits the room and closes the door behind him. His last words can be heard from outside the room ::
“And the first lesson’s respect.”
:: The scene comes to a close. ::
