The camera shows Kirsty Mascara sitting on a park bench in an area surrounded by grass and trees.
Kirsty Mascara: For the past couple of weeks I’ve heard secrets telling me that people are asking who is Kirsty Mascara and how did she end up in a country with nothing. It all goes back to the day when I was born. On the day that I was born, I wasn’t alone, I was born with a twin brother called Edward. As kids, Edward and I shared the same room in a perfectly normal loving home. Our mum was mostly a stay-at-home mum who took care of us and our dad worked for a company that manufactured and installed security cameras. Everything was fine until Edward and I met puberty.
Kirsty Mascara lowers her head for a few seconds then raises it.
Kirsty Mascara: For many people, puberty is a point where you go from a boy or girl to a man or a woman. In my life puberty was when my brother discovered an interest in incest. He didn’t want to experience a relationship with other women, no he only wanted his own sister, the one girl who he had known for his entire life. To some people this might sound like a cute story of a brother playing with their sister, however, it was non-stop stalking, peaking, attempts at touching, and anything else that he could have tried to do. To make things much worse for me anytime I mentioned it to my parents as any issue their attitude was “Oh don’t worry about it, it’s just a boy being a boy.” My parents looked at me like I was a woman in a world of men and as a result, I wasn’t meant to succeed in life. My brother however was treated like a chosen one who was going to get everything that he could possibly want.
Kirsty Mascara laughs.
Kirsty Mascara: Then came a big day when I watched wrestling on television. I knew right there and then that it was what I wanted to be part of. My brother, however, couldn’t handle the idea that I wanted to have my own life so when it came to me going to wrestling training he joined me. In our training sessions, I was working hard to show everybody that I deserved to be there, I wanted to be booked on shows in front of a crowd with other people who were there training. My brother however wasn’t interested in taking it all seriously. He took it as if he was training to be a clown at a circus. The only thing in wrestling that he would be good for is some awkward comedy match where his opponent keeps tripping him up.
Kirsty Mascara stands up.
Kirsty Mascara: While training to become a professional wrestler you hear about lines like “You’re a future one to watch”, “One day you’re going to sign a big contract” and even things like “One day you’re going to be a champion.” Those lines weren’t aimed at my brother and I, no they were aimed at another woman who was training. A woman who then went on to get caught up in her own legal issues.
Kirsty Mascara stops talking for a few seconds.
Kirsty Mascara: There was one night after wrestling training where I was waiting in a street for my bus ride home to arrive. Across the road I saw the other woman accidentality hit a man and then the police arrived and the man said that she assaulted him. She was then arrested and the next day she went to court and was charged. She then went to an asylum where she spent months trying to fight for her freedom.
Kirsty Mascara looks up at the sky and sees black clouds. She then lowers her head.
Kirsty Mascara: Not long afterward my dad told me that he had to do some camera repair work at a cinema that was placed where the accident had happened. So I pretended to be interested in his job and asked to go with him. At first, he was hesitant to take me but he saw how keen I was about going and eventually agreed to take me. While my dad worked on repairing the cameras I was left in the Security Room by myself. Inside the room, I came across a tape and I decided to watch it. On the tape was the other female trainee walking in the street and the man who she accidentality hit. As I continued to watch it I saw the real truth. It wasn’t an accident the man had purposely reached out his arm so that she would bump into it. The man then lied to the police however they believed him and didn’t think about asking the cinema for their security footage. As I continued to watch it, I took out my phone and recorded the footage onto its camera.
Kirsty Mascara begins to walk to a park gate.
Kirsty Mascara: The thing about my dad’s job is he has to go to many places on the same day. Once he had finished working at the cinema, we went to a courthouse. The same one that the other woman went to after being arrested. When my dad and I went to the courthouse he left me inside another Security Room where I found another tape to look at. On this tape was the same man carrying a briefcase which he handed over to a judge. Inside the briefcase was a bribe so that he would get his way. The other woman was then sentenced to go to an asylum. As I watched the tape, I recorded some of the footage with my phone’s camera.
Kirsty Mascara leaves the park.
Kirsty Mascara: I’m going to stop telling my story here, however, I promise you that the next time you see me I will tell you more.
The camera fades.
