Death Trap: Time…
Time has a funny way of playing jokes on you. While you’re waiting for what you think you know, what happens next is never what you could’ve come to expect.
*A quick twiddle of the thumbs as DT sits in a chair with his head down, hidden under a hood.*
Time, the one fighter that everyone loses to eventually. The one battle that truly is insurmountable. Always slipping away, bit by bit, marching us all to that inevitable finale. A fight I have somehow denied losing time and time again. How many times I’ve sat in this same situation. Edge of my seat, staring into my palms, wondering if this is the day it all ends. How many times have I had to confront the inescapable march of time? Neck injuries, head injuries, concussions, home feds dying, physical condition deteriorating, mental condition … non-existant.
*DT slowly pulls the hood off his head, his hair is starting to thin a bit, his beard shows streaks and flecks of gray. While his legendary abs show little sign of deterioration, the scars on his shoulders and neck are evident. The lines around his eyes, the slight sag of the skin on his cheeks and jaw, the slight fade of his hairline over his temples … all show the toll the war with Father Time has taken on the XHF Legend.*
In a way, this is a fitting event for me. My whole career has been a constant battle to beat the clock. Failing out of my initial career, the rush to find a career, a source of income. Rushing to get noticed among the cluster of new debuting wrestlers. Figuring out just what kind of wrestler I would have to become. Heh, how it all started-
Death Trap: Heh, I bet there isn’t a soul left in this place that remembers the way I wrestled in ECF, flying recklessly off the ropes like some crazy luchador. Maybe Magnus … but then he used to have two arms …
Why do we let bears wrestle again?
*DT slowly stands up and pulls the hoodie over his head. He winces a bit as the long career and recent run of insane matches since joining SWAT in 2020 has beaten him down, he tosses the hoodie on the bed and then removes his t-shirt to grab a workout ready top. As he turns we see a glint in his closet, like a small camera or something is hidden at ab height …*
Regardless, this is not a new challenge for me. Saving ECF from Harry’s takeover was a time sensitive affair. Taking apart Mongo Corp? Job and future at risk, need to get it done fast. World Champion in my first year as a wrestler, Phoenix Champ in my first 2 months in XHF, World Champ after two years. I earned my way into the main event by being one of the first to beat Reeshi. Sure I couldn’t take the belt from him but who else could do that?
Death Trap: My entire career … can be summed up by being great when the chips were down. I’m fully aware my track record for holding onto titles isn’t … uh … the best.
Honestly I don’t know anyone beyond maybe Gravedigger who would call me a great champion… or an exciting one …
Death Trap: But when it comes to winning … beating the clock to get it done … reacting under pressure to climb to the top, putting on the best show? That’s where I excelled. And I still do.
*He pops on a Metallica sleeveless t-shirt and grabs a gym towel. DT then turns around and sighs. He slaps his face with both hands to psyche himself up.*
And now my career is literally a clock challenge. I don’t know how much longer I can do this at this level. And I don’t want to go out like Ric Flair … I need to make my mark, or rather deepen my mark, on the business. I came to Reign to get to Donzig. But now I see it as a chance to once again thrill a new audience.
Death Trap: *looking towards the camera for the first time* Null. I don’t know you. I don’t need to. You have talent in the ring, anyone who watched Fired Up can see that. Anyone who can carry Dylan Black that far and make him look competent without weapons has to be ok. But for me … this is more than just a challenge to beat you as fast as possible. This is my war with Father Time. I still have more in the tank. But …
Concussions … tapping out for the first time in decades … struggling to get Mistress and I over that finish line. Time is coming for me.
Death Trap: This isn’t personal. Nor is it to make you look bad. But I need to outpace Donzig or Rat. I need to outpace Blaze and Shimamura. My enemy in the ring may be you. But the main villain here is time. And if I want to get one more run at glory, one more starring role. You need to fall. Hard.
Just one more time to beat the clock. No crazy gimmicks, no ultra violence. Just me and another wrestler in the ring doing what I do best. I have this. Reign best be ready. The Main Attraction is about to start its next showing…
*He pushes out his hotel room door and turns down the hallway with a confident look on his face. The wincing, the grimacing gone. A rejuvenated and ready DT walks out of frame*
