TAP OUT EXEC
We’ve opened conversations with Steve Awesome. If he survives End of Days, we want to bring him into Tap Out for a match. He mentioned names like NOMAD, Jack Diamond, Poena or Jason Long…
CROSS RECOBA
That’s all the remaining top seeds, we’d have to suspend the tournament for a month. How’s that going to look? Supremacy we have a title defense or we crown the new champion!
TAP OUT EXEC
You can either have integrity or profit, rarely can you have both…
The executive looked to see if his words had landed but the look on Cross’ face told him it wasn’t worth pushing, instead he turned on his heels and close the boardroom door.
CROSS RECOBA
I’ll roll over and die before Tap Out puts sporting competition on the backburner.
He presses a button on the intercom.
CROSS RECOBA
Hayley, get the camera crew to meet me in the Lansky Ballroom.
In front of the darkened set-up for Tap Out Wrestling, Cross looks into the camera.
CROSS RECOBA
With just days to go until I step foot inside an Infinite Pro Wrestling ring I’ve been kept extremely amused by what the other competitors who will step into the ring with me have to say.
The Tap Out Production team hit their cue, a single spotlight shines on him.
CROSS RECOBA
Perhaps the only thing we can all agree on is that this is the match that is bringing the house. This is for the title that actually seems like it matters when people talk about Infinite Pro…that’s where the similarities really end.
Cross perches on the announce desk.
CROSS RECOBA
We have a champion who is so lacking in self-awareness that he’d tell you he’d be aware of that flaw if it existed. Who talks of my pride without realizing how elevated beyond reality his own is. A man who is so confident in the result that he has proclaimed it days before the bell has even sounded. When you hear him talk what does he actually say? There’s some proclamation of how the Jamrockers run Infinite Pro, normally a nickname pilfered from the scrap bin of a failed Mad magazine writer, and then follows how they’re the anti-heroes of Infinite Pro Wrestling. What he fails to realize is the amount of targets that are currently aimed at the back of him and Jimi Cooldown. What he fails to mention is that he wouldn’t even be in this match if it wasn’t for his partner enacting a clusterfuck where he managed to ride his luck to a win. What he fails to understand is that his job isn’t to retain in the match, it’s to survive.
The denouement of the IPW Openweight title match from First Contact plays on the Tap Out tron in the background.
CROSS RECOBA
El Rey didn’t have the fight I had to get where I am but he’s had the best teachers around to get him there. I had to prove myself to Chris Card to even become his tag-partner and without Card available to El Rey, he has Zoran. A man who I’ve studied since I joined the Network, who I have begrudging respect for and who taught him a move that Spike Kane knows well, how to stab a man without a blink or hesitation to telegraph it. I can look past what Touchdown did and be quite happy in the knowledge that Touchdown, Kane and El Rey may just end up cancelling each other out.
The clusterfuck has started to play on the tron.
CROSS RECOBA
The issue we share, Alastor, is that Spike Kane is a man who thrives on hate. You’d be naive to think that he doesn’t use that inner bile to propel himself to victory. This is a man who had no problem consigning his brother to Hell, this is a man who brought chaos and terror to every opponent he faced. My worry, Touchdown, is that I don’t think you can live with him in the ring and I need you to be able to absorb enough punishment that I can concentrate on winning the title. Say what you want but I refuse to even tell people I’m more brutal than Spike with a straight-face. My only card to play that I can rely on is that I know I can outwit him, I know I’m more confident on how he rates in the ring than he is of me. After all, why even spend the time he did talking about me if I’m so inconsequential?
The tron moves onto the self-indulgent Jamrocker segment at the following Adrenaline.
CROSS RECOBA
Lastly, we have Johnny Five, who might just thrive under being the wildcard in the match. The question is, did he like El Rey and I learn from our more experienced mentors? Did he pick up from Misha the ruthlessness that El Rey got from Zoran? Did he pick up from Misha the cunning that I gained from teaming with Card?
The tron over, the only light in the ballroom remains on Cross.
CROSS RECOBA
People have said I’ve been too modest in talking up my chances in the fight but here’s the reality. You want to see what I can do and who I can best? The record books tell you that. You want to know the lengths that I’ll go to get what I want? I know every rule in the book purely to be able to bend them to my will and this weekend you’re fighting in a match I picked. You’re fighting in a match I excel in. The fact it’s multi-man doesn’t faze me, it just makes it easier for me to manipulate the parts. Touchdown, you’re a kid talking up a man’s game and when that bell rings and you realize that you’re the first focus of our opponents, it’s not because they want your belt…it’s because you’re just a Thrush. An irritating little cu-
